Unique Submissions using Restricted Materials

Proposal to remove the mandatory dev thread requirement for restricted materials on items that are Unique.

I also ask that if you're staff that is outside of the factory staff that you refrain from commenting until Factory staff has worked out any kinks, etc. I appreciate any and all comments, but I'm trying to prevent flooding of the thread and discouraging any Factory Judge from commenting because they see a feth ton of red and dark yellow names.

The reasoning behind this notion is the concept that most of these materials, mostly phrik can be found on several planets. To top this off, most of the dev threads require mining which in most cases people are board and just post their required 10 posts and then move on. With removing the required dev thread on items that are unique and even semi-unique, the submitter can focus on the development threads for more exciting and unique portions to their submissions.

As such, this change will be only in the technology forum: namely because I don’t need to see a songsteel unique personal ship or something along those lines. That would require massive amount of materials and by hand waving such things would break the game.

So in the rules for development threads and in the restricted materials guide I’d like to include the following:

All Technology submissions that are Unique will not require the restricted material challenge for the following materials: Phrik, Songsteel, and Beskar.

I suggested those three since in my opinion I see them used the most often and the songsteel quest is a bit much and is extremely challenging. Either way, I’m open to extending the list to include more and/or shortening the list to include less.

For a catch all, I’m partially against since some of the restricted materials can be abused even at the unique level.

Just a question, not a suggestion to add or anything, but what are your thoughts on Cortosis being on this list? I have no strong feelings either way, just felt a moment's curiosity upon reading it again tonight.

I didn't get this tag, so I am just seeing this now.

I'm guessing this was the come about from my thread about the restricted materials? If so this would be fine in my eyes. I'm on the fence with Cortosis, since it does give the added bonus of shorting out lightsabers, though on the other hand there is a non-restricted material that counteracts this ability, so in reality Cortosis is defeated by a non-restricted material so I think it could stand to be added to the list of not needing a dev thread for unique.

I got Jamies tag just now.

I am on the fence on this one. At one hand, I dont wanna see phrik/beskar/songsteel on everyone considering its rarity and the irony of how many items of these materials are out there.

On the other hand, it's too late anyways for me to prevent an 'overkill' xD so waving away the restriction for unique only is perhaps a good idea. I am slightly afraid of the flood that will come if/when this happens but eh. Also, I would like us to test drive it. If it works not as we want it too, take it off ASAP.

All in all, I sm for this as long as its Unique only. Jorus made a good point about Semi-Unique and I echo that sentiment.

Yeah all of it would remain on unique only, most things that people make unique require dev in general because everyone likes their personal toys to be "awesome"

Once I get a bit more from the judges I'll implement this.

I've been paying attention to this topic, but I don't really have strong feelings one way or the other, though my thoughts on the matter are fairly similar to Zef's.

Just because I haven't seen this mentioned before, I think we might get some angst from some members who feel like they "worked hard" to earn their restricted materials in the past. I'm not saying that this angst should stop the initiative, but I think it's something we should prepare ourselves to encounter.

To your points, I definitely understand that, but at the same time, if people are complaining that the factory has become too much work, and have thus started using it less, this would open up more potential for people to submit things and have more fun than making them do rather tedious amounts of work. 10 posts of meaningless story for a material that can be substituted for a material not on the list that provides the exact same benefit, or that can be defeated by something else that is not on the list is kind of a drag. But yeah, I'm sure there will be the folks who will get angry because of it.

Don't worry about the angst from people who are frustrated that they "did the work before" - they will be just as free to get phrik, beskar, or songsteel as anyone else.

Still have not heard from [member="Reshmar"] or [member="Haytham Kaze"]

I'm going to assume this is mostly in favor. Anyone else have any ideas on any other materials we should put on the list? If not this will go live for a trial for 2 weeks, we see what happens and what the feedback is from the community.

If we're opening it up a little, I'd suggest neuranium. It's wonky, potentially useful, and rarely OP for unique stuff, has a funky and difficult dev requirement, and only starts being worthy of serious attention at higher production levels.

I could be wrong, but I believe this has a tenuous relationship to the codex at best (mines maybe?).

That being said, this has merit, as a mining operation would likely offer more than the material required for a single item (and thus overkill).

At this point the only relevance it holds is the Restricted Materials, which we require development for when those seeking to add it to new custom planets or when creating new mines to put on planets already approved with RM (or canon sources). I will not be removing development from either, as for both it is a one-time development for acquirement/procurement of a (technically) limitless source of RM.

We provide the sources. What Factory decides to do with the products is their business.
