VAD LOGAN
NAME: Vad Logan
FACTION: Rimward Trade League
RANK: Captain
SPECIES: Human
AGE: 39
SEX: Male
HEIGHT: 5’10” - 177cm
WEIGHT: 180lbs
EYES: Brown
HAIR: Brown
SKIN: Light but tanned
FORCE SENSITIVE: No.
STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES:
Strengths:
Combat Veteran: Years of seeing combat up close have instilled in Vad the instincts only a frontline soldier would obtain. He piloted small starships, fired blasters, patched up wounded comrades, and felt the heat mortar round landing only a few meters away.
Leadership: His charisma and empathy makes it easy for others to put their trust in him. He has an excellent track record of not only keeping a squad alive but working together as a team. When the chips are down, a group will usually turn to Logan to call the shots.
Jack of All Trades: Vad has an innate talent for picking up new skills easily. Whether it’s marksmanship, fixing a broken down speeder bike, or a slight-of-hand card trick. He’s not a genius by any means but he knows enough about a lot to get him in or out of most situations.
Weaknesses:
Guilty conscience: Logan had a checkered past growing up poor and rebellious. He fell in with the wrong crowd and did some things he’s not proud of and hasn’t forgotten. His adult life has been spent trying to make up for old mistakes but the past still haunts him.
Addictive personality: Related to his inner-guilt, Vad finds comfort in substances to numb his pain. Drinking and smoking are his vices of choice but he’s not known to say no to other “good times” should they come his way.
Politically jaded: While the people under his command have always felt Logan was loyal to a fault, his superiors would disagree. He finds it difficult to salute any flag, knowing that the motivations of its top leaders likely do not have the people’s best interest at heart. This makes top brass distrustful of Vad since he would be prone to disobey orders or even desert if he didn’t personally agree with the decision.
APPEARANCE:
Logan stands at average height for a human male but sports a muscular physique from years in the armed services and criminal institutions. He keeps his salt-and-pepper hair and beard grown out but groomed. His skin is tanned and leathery from years of working outdoors and around machine shops. Scars are like freckles on his body. All over the place and each one with a long story to tell.
BIOGRAPHY:
Would you rather hear the true story or the tall tales Vad likes to tell in the tavern after he’s had a few? Well suit yourself, the truth it is.
Early Life:
Vad was born on the planet Balosar. His father was a dock worker and teamster who serviced and occasionally crewed trade ships in the region. During his youth Vad always wanted to help his dad. He learned mechanic skills and how to pilot small support craft used in loading and unloading freighters.
Logan’s family life took a dark turn after his father was injured during a shipyard accident. He became bitter and frustrated after his injury but continued to work. His father spent more time away from home on trading runs as supervisors since he could no longer do manual labor, leaving Vad and his mother to fend for themselves.
Balosar had come a long way since its notorious past but it was still a great place to get into trouble, if you’re into that sort of thing. Teenage Logan was into that sort of thing. He started hanging out with a group of other kids who lived in his impoverished neighborhood. Vad learned how to fight, how to lie, and how to steal. And steal they did.
His first run in with the law came after he was caught after taking a lifted speeder on a joy ride. The scrappy little teen crew caught the attention of more established criminals and soon they were taking jobs for quick cash. They broke into warehouses. They intimidated traders to pay their protection fees. If a job needed to be done, Vad and his friends were ready to roll.
The biggest heist job of Vad’s young life turned into his biggest mistake. The crew was tasked with hijacking a transport freighter in low planetary orbit. It was supposed to be easy. They would use a floating lift craft to board the freighter and convince the pilot to make an emergency landing at an airstrip nearby where the more experienced pirates were waiting. The boarding went as planned but the pilot was not cooperative. As they neared the LZ, the freighter captain pulled a concealed blaster and shot one of Logan’s friends. The pilot must have expected that the rest of the teens would surrender but they responded with rage. A scuffle broke out whereby the blaster ended up in Vad’s hands and the pilot wrestling with another kid of the heist crew. Without thinking, Logan shot the pilot. As the adrenaline wore off, he felt terrible. He never wanted to kill anyone. He managed to land the freighter at the airstrip.Things went from bad to worse when it wasn’t pirates waiting for them, it was the police.
Freshly eighteen years old and facing nearly as many charges. Murder. Grand theft. Conspiracy. Racketeering. The judge’s voice faded into a muffled rumbling until he announced the verdict: Guilty. Logan spent the next two years in a prison facility on a penal colony world. Life inside was hard. A daily nightmare. Then salvation came.
His family had been working to get him out and struck a deal. Logan was given the option of serving in a military foreign legion to forgive a portion of his sentence. It was presented as an option but there was only one right answer.
Military Service:
Vad enlisted and was sent to basic. This battalion was technically under jurisdiction of the Galactic Alliance but it operated somewhat differently, hence using convicts and other ne'er-do-wells in its service. Logan was sent to battlefronts on the fringes of alliance space. He proved himself in combat against pirates, zealous insurgents, and rogue warlords.
Over the next nine years he rose up the ranks and reached the position of staff sergeant. It was the highest position he could obtain given his record. No matter how many engagements he won, how many men he saved, the leadership never let him forget who he was. A criminal. A murderer. Logan knew that if he truly wanted to escape this title he had to run for it but the thought of leaving his comrades kept him in line. Until fate intervened.
During an escort mission along a dangerous trade route his convoy came under attack by pirates. They hit fast with heavy weaponry, quickly disabling both corvettes in Vad’s group and engaging the fighter patrol. His captain ordered their small fighter squadron to support but one of the airmen sustained injuries when the ship's hull was hit. Vad took his place and hopped in the fighter. He didn’t have much experience in starfighter combat but knew they needed assistance.
The fight lasted only a short few minutes. Logan disabled one pirate fighter before his ship was hit with an ion torpedo. The fighter went dark and he could only watch helplessly as the pirates picked off his squadmates one by one. The thieves boarded the cargo freighter and flew it off route. It disappeared into the blackness of space. Everything was dark. The lifeless corvettes hung silent in the vacuum. Vad was sure the crew must have survived but without power they were stranded.
Suddenly, as if lady luck herself paid him a visit, Logan’s fighter systems whirred back to life. The dash lit up, engines fired, and he was back in control. He radioed on comms that he was alright but there was no answer. The corvettes’ systems were still down. For the second time in his life Vad had a choice. He would return to the ship and wait for rescue or he could take this fighter and fly as far as he could. Away from the legion. Away from Balosar. Away from his black mark as a convict. There was only one right answer.
Logan punched in coordinates for the outer rim and jumped to hyperspace.
A New Life:
At age 29, Vad Logan found himself on Sluis Van. The vast shipyards there reminded him of home. A great place to blend in. At least as well a guy like Vad could blend in. Showing up with a military starfighter earned him a lot of questions. He made up a story about winning it in a game of sabacc with a wealthy collector. He considered selling it for money but the ship allowed him to earn a living as an escort for hire. Back to protecting trade convoys but at least he was free.
When the caravan season was slow, Logan would moonlight as bounty hunter. Only above board contracts issued by federal authorities. His personal knowledge of criminal tendencies made him quite adept at capturing fugitives. So much so that the local marshalls offered him a job. Logan saw it as a way to clean his slate. No longer would he be a convict and a deserter. He would be a protector. On his own terms.
Vad’s career in law enforcement earned him multiple commendations on Sluis Van and nearby worlds. During the following seven years since his arrival in the outer rim he received several recommendations to join the Rimward Trade League defense forces. Logan declined. He had served his time in the military and detested the idea of surrendering his freedom again.
After a particularly daring victory during a hostage situation on Sullust, Vad garnered the personal interest of the local council representative. They insisted on sponsoring him to the defense force. Logan protested but slowly the Sullustan won him over.
Through his new savvy sponsor Vad received an official Rimward Ranger Corps commission. He was promised a modicum of independence. He could select his own staff and recruit his own personnel. The budget for his detachment wasn’t nearly the amount of other companies so his unit would be small but they trusted his ability to grow it over time. This was his opportunity to bring the rocky journey of his life full circle. He would use his experience to protect peace in the only way he knew how, with a blaster.
