STRENGTHS
- Jury Rigged:
As per usual Kragamond ship design, the Vagabond is a heavily modified civilian craft frigate, possessing harvested and repurposed weaponry from destroyed or captured vessels. The biggest aspect of the ship which showcases the merits of the wartribe’s ability to jury-rig almost anything to their purposes is the use of flechette batteries. Normally, flechette weapons are handheld weapons which fire multiple needle-sized rounds at targets en-masse. Similarly, the Vagabond’s flechette cannons fire mass quantities of shrapnel and fragmentation material at enemy warships. While not the most effective at penetrating reinforced armor systems or shields while at range, they are devastating against more standardized armor systems and can whittle down heavier armor at close ranges, particularly when used in conjunction with its more typical weapon systems. Additionally, the Vagabond’s integration of the SLAM drive renders it among the fastest of frigates one would encounter - which is a boon for the wartribe, but a terror to its victims. - RAMMING SPEED: Most Vagabonds possess a sharpened, serrated prow section for use in ramming enemy vessels. Given the a-typical nature of these ships, prow durability and shape is anything but consistent, with ramming not always being amongst the first things a captain of such a ship would do near the outset of an engagement. Nevertheless, the prow is almost always reinforced with salvaged duranium, and if the situation presents itself where it makes tactical sense (or if you have a crazy enough captain), the ship is more than capable of successfully ramming enemy ships with devastating effect. Whether it survives the encounter would remain to be seen, and likely depend on the size and make of the target vessel.
- Reaver: Due to its size and relative ease of producing it, the Vagabond is among the most common of ships used within the Kragamond Wartribe. It’s extreme speed, above average maneuverability, and intimidating appearance make it the ideal ship for reaving and raiding operations. It is because of this that the very sight of this ship in any real quantity can inspire both fear and read within even the hardiest of captains.
WEAKNESSES
- Jury Rigged: Despite providing advantages, the ‘jury rigged’ nature of the Vagabond comes with noted drawbacks as well. While an interesting and dangerous weapon when used in the right context, the flechette cannons are not the most effective weapons to be used at ranges greater than ‘short’, as they are basically glorified scatterguns strapped onto a ship. The SLAM drive is extremely effective at giving the frigate the needed speed to pursue other enemies - be they smaller or equally sized; as well as to gain enough velocity for a ramming charge. That said, the integration of such a powerful acceleration system with the already speedy engine compartment of frigates used to make the Vagabond has been known to shorten the life of the engine itself. Worst case scenario, improper use and maintenance (lets face it, the wartribe is lackluster at best with regard to general maintenance) could result in a ship being temporarily disabled if overusing their SLAM drive, which would require the disabled vessel to be towed to a drydock for refitting.
- Lightweight: Although the Vagabond can pack a punch on its own, it cannot take a hit very well as it usually must depend on salvaged material from civilian-grade starships. They are usually dependent on their speed and maneuverability to survive engagements, and even then; the reckless nature in which this ship is utilized usually results in greater than preferred casualties.
- No Hangar: The Vagabond is completely devoid of a larger hangar deck, only being able to house a single shuttle via an umbilical and clamp mechanism on the bottom of the vessel.
DESCRIPTION
For a force as vast and aggressive as the Kragamond Wartribe, there is a distinct need for easily constructed vessels to facilitate their ability to be a blight on society at large. This need is fulfilled by the Vagabond-class Raider Frigate. These ships are typically built utilizing salvaged sections and components of civilian vessels that fall victim to the tribe, along with armaments salvaged from what military installations and caches can be raided as well. In a matter of months, what once was a defenseless pleasure yacht or cargo freighter can be easily converted into one of the most feared and versatile raiding vessels in the galaxy.
Known for its near-unbelievable speed, as well as its brutal array of armaments for a vessel its size, the Vagabond is commonly seen raiding hyperspace lanes and planetary settlements throughout the galactic frontier, steadily rising as the backbone of the tribe’s raiding parties. Among the ship’s biggest strengths is the unpredictable manner in which its captains can use it to great effect. She is quite capable of outmaneuvering enemy vessels, overtaking fleeing targets, swarming and overwhelming even the hardest of ship-board defenses, or even ramming into the sides of unsuspecting cruisers - even if it results in the deaths of all hands on board.
Spacers beware, and proceed with extreme caution.
