Description: After several recent military affairs, it had been decided that a return to traditional naval conventions would be a prudent measure to bolster the defense of the Hapes Consortium by extending the range of the Royal Navy's combat aviation forces as well as providing a dedicated mobile command base for fighters. The executives of Paragon Enterprises looked to older dedicated carrier designs and determined that the Navy would be able to better field more fighters and strike bombers as well as handle the coordination of their combat effectiveness if there existed a dedicated ship for those purposes. The Vanguard-Class Dedicated Command Carrier's concept was born, taking the conventions of yesterday and modernizing them for today. The shape of the ship, incidentally, was inspired by a combination of Old Republic and Imperial designs with a bit of distinctly Hapan flair.
Taking cues from older designs, the ship was designed to carry up to 108 individual starfighters, subdivided into 9 squadrons of 12. The ship possessed six full-sized hangar bays from which ships could take off and land. The docking bays also had an internal lift system and sorting mechanism that would store the fighters within the protection of the ship's armoured and shielded hull. A unique innovation, however, was the ability to launch more fighters in a shorter period of time than 6 docking bays alone might allow via an array of electromagnetic launch tubes that used the same principals as the electromagnetic tubes mass-transport trains used on various worlds throughout the Galaxy: the fighters could be accelerated out of the tube at near-combat speed, ready to commence operations as soon as they clear the tube, much like a launch catapult on ancient sea-based carrier designs. There were access lifts that got the pilots to their fighters quickly, running from the hangar bays to the launch tubes, as well, to facilitate a marked emphasis upon rapid response and deployment. This design also made 'bouncing' fighters during take off much more difficult for enemies.
Shielding layers start from 1.5 metres below the outer hull plating, which is made primarily of warship-grade durasteel with some Matrix armour plating in vital areas, such as the command bridge, powerplant, and around the launch tubes and docking bays. The weapon systems on the Vangaurd were meant primarily for point-defense purposes, such as the use of rapid-fire precision laser cannons and ion cannons to defend against missile and torpedo attacks as well as enemy fighters and other small craft up to a freighter in scale. Each of its targeting computer systems could control two PDLs and two PDIs, being designed to assist living gunners or assist droid intelligence, alternatively, to maximize point defense capability. In addition to its shielding and armour plating, this made the Carrier much more defensible at the cost of its ability to fight back as a true warship in its own right. To compensate, its role as a dedicated carrier made use of its large number of fighters and assault bombers as a kind of attack swarm that could reach far further than the effective range of most conventional weapon systems on top of the fact that these same fighters and bombers could be deployed for any manner of military operations otherwise.
However, the Vanguard had alot of mass to move and was a rather large and expensive ship. Within the limitations of powerplants available for a ship of its size and role, its main shortcomings were its slow sublight speed and sluggish maneuverability, apart from its ineffectiveness in a ship-to-ship standoff. As a result, it was completely dependent upon faster, more weaponized escort warships, such as the Wyvern, the Supernova, and any fighters and assault bombers the fleet carried to maximize survivability and overall military effectiveness. The Vanguard had a specialized communications hub with electronic countermeasure capability, functioned as a dedicated AWACS for a fleet's fighters, and had an advanced, broad-spectrum sensor suite that facilitated its warning and command capability. The ship could go for years without internal maintenance under normal, expected conditions and was kept well stocked with fuel and ordinance for its complement of fighters. While not inherently meant to capture enemy ships, it possessed two medium-range tractor beam projectors at each of its six hangar bays that could function as an emergency 'net' for friendly ships or potentially constrain enemy ships that strayed too close.
