"I knew it was over when they started preaching Sith Eternalism. The war had turned against us, and they gave grand speeches about how the Sith would never die out. What about us Non-Force-Sensitives? Who gave our all to make their dreams become a reality. They showed how much they valued us when they burnt their own cities. Our cities. Time and time again I realised maybe the traitors had a point, but too much blood has been spilt to change banners now. All that is left are zealots who massacre non-believers in their beds and those too afraid to admit they don't believe anymore. The Sith Empire I fought for is dead, has been for a long time now; I just didn't want to admit it. But we won't go down with it. Or go cap in hand to the traitors and their Jedi friends, begging for clemency."

- Colonel Jerrod

Empires, no matter whether they are democratic or authoritarian, come and go. Each tries to exact its will upon the galaxy and shape it according to its ideology. Inevitably, they all fall. However, when a government implodes, it leaves legions that used to serve under its banner behind. Though the Dark Age supposedly ended decads ago, the fact that recent galactic history has been characterised by all manners of genocides, world-ending cataclysms and interstellar wars would suggest otherwise. Warlord remnants are a common feature of regime collapse.

The Vanguard of the Exodites is one of them. It is a comparatively small, but well-trained formation of Imperialists founded from Sith remnants, most prominently the Sith Empire. Some of the soldiers used to work for various Imperial Remnant style regimes. They are deserters and exiles who have banded together to survive. Several still follow Imperial ideals to varying degrees, others do not care. At the end of the day, they are soldiers without a country, who believe their erstwhile masters betrayed and failed them. The bond with their fellow brothers and sisters in arms is far more important. One could call it a cult of the warrior.

Some are old veterans who already fought under the banner of the One Sith and the Sith regimes that followed in its wake. Others are young soldiers conscripted into the Sith legions during the Third Imperial Civil War. They have found safe haven under the banner of a new Dark Master, Enyo Typhos. The dour cyborg assisted the Sith Empire in several battles as a mercenary contractor who commanded her own paramilitary force. Besides, she already employs a bunch of ex-One Sith soldiers, so incorporating former servitors of more recent Sith or Imperial regimes was not much of a leap. Their unit emblem is a skull and crossbones symbol. Enyo finds it awfully melodramatic, but has let them keep it since she understands the importance of esprit de corps. It is often painted on their helmets and vehicles.

While the Exodites' wear armour and use symbols that hearken back to the days of the New Order, they do not abide by the speciesist conventions of Human High Culture. As a result, the group does have alien members, though they constitute a clear minority and most of them are near-humans. The mentality the Exodites' leaders seek to cultivate among the officers and enlisted is defined by speed, an eagerness to attack, fearlessness under fire, decisiveness and tactical intelligence. They are supposed to embrace a death-defying love of fighting. It is both elitist and nihilist. Their commander calls it 'heroic realism', a fatalistic glorifcation of 'heroic' fighting. Battle itself is defined as an ecstatic and mystical experience. They honour the fallen stormtroopers who died a 'hero's death'. The punishments for treason, desertion or cowardice in battle are draconian.

Unlike the forces typically utilised by her, the members of the Vanguard are largely unaugmented humans rather than cyborgs or droids. With their expertise in urban warfare, sieges and combined arms operations, the Exodites are a useful asset to Enyo's troops. They are good at defending friendly positions and seizing fortified enemy positions. They are often used in siege warfare. At Enyo's instigation, a force of battle and security droids has been added to the Vanguard. Many of these droids have support duties, such as patrolling, demolitions, and guarding supplies. Other than light walkers and armoured personnel carriers, the Vanguard does have some droid-brain piloted walkers, self-propelled artillery and aerial craft. Therefore if there was an 'incident' the machines would be still under Enyo's control.

The Exodites are commanded by Colonel Erik Jerrod, a former Sith-Imperial officer from Galidraan. He has a well-groomed handlebar moustache, an Imperial accent and wears a monocle. Jerrod is a competent leader who issues rewards and punishments on the basis of merit. But he is not a stereotypical 'man of honour' who 'only did his duty' and was 'forced to serve an evil tyrant but never did anything bad'. Nor was he misled and tricked into servitude. His professional skills are matched by his pride and ruthlessness. Among other fronts, he served on Mandalore, Ession and Bastion.

Words such as 'duty' and 'honour' are often on his lips, but he has been responsible for or silently acquiescied in atrocities against civilians and POWs. But these crimes do not haunt him at night. If they were brought up, he would deny his and his men's involvement, say that these things happen in every war and thus are nothing to get worked up about since everyone des them. If that does not work, he will blame them on the Sith and say he was just a soldier following his oath.

He turned against his former Sith masters because they were losing and he saw their methods as wasteful. Moreover, he believed they did not value his men. But he did not suddenly experience a crisis of conscience. While his recent experiences have left him with a feeling of strong disdain for Sith, this has not stopped him from accepting a job offer from another amoral Dark Master. Jerrod gets on poorly with Neda Chazzak, the Zabrak commander of Enyo's Eisenkrieger. She is a rough-and-tumble ex-One Sith Sergeant and likes to mock his pretentiousness.

Another senior member is Captain Helana Motti, a ruthless opportunist, and social climber with a talent for advancing her own interests. She has absolutely no problems with carrying out atrocities, and only defected because she caught the ire of a Sith after killing their apprentice with a blaster bolt to the back after said acolyte had made the mistake of insulting her. She was canny enough to persuade some minions to jump ship with her and steal some heavy equipment, including a few light walkers.

Ronderu San Qalii is one of the more unusual senior members of the Vanguard, for she is not a human, but a Kaleesh. For a while the Sith Empire controlled Kalee, promising her people support against the Huk. Ronderu was not fooled by honeyed promises, for words are wind, but acknowledged their martial strength. Having spent much of her life as a roaming mercenary offering her services to various chieftains, she joined the Sith-Imperials as an auxiliary.

The banner of the Iron Sun has now been raised on Kalee, but she has stuck with her new comrades in arms and has a brought a small, but deadly group of Kaleesh with her. Ronderu is something of a confidante to Jerrod, having helped him plot his desertion and remove threats. Racists among the stormtroopers quickly learn to hold their tongue around her unless they want to lose it. She is the senior NCO of the force, responsible for training, keeping the troops in line and leading the charge. She accomplishes these tasks with meticulous efficiency.

Captain Arnim Quinn is a career soldier promoted up the ranks for steady work, reliability and massive attrition. He rose from sergeant to Captain in the space of six months after the GA/NIO war with no rest or resupply. Seeing the Empire falling apart he deserted. And for the best since his unit was mauled on Ziost. He is respected by his men due to having risen from the ranks instead of getting a promotion due to money or political manoeuvring.

Combat Function: The Vanguard of the Exodites are a heavy assault unit. Utilising mechanised infantry and armoured assets, they can strike hard against the enemy to execute breakthroughs as well as shore up allied defences. This gives them a good deal of firepower despite their limited size. Primarily made up of mechanised line infantry, the Exodites are accustomed to trench warfare, being accustomed to exploiting gaps in an enemy's defensive lines, building trenches and shelling positions. The Vanguard also has support units such as combat engineers and combat medics. The Vanguard does not have limitless reserves of cannon fodder, so all stormtroopers are trained to fly their transports in case their pilot is killed.

Their stormtroopers and light walkers are backed up by heavy landers as well as droid-brain controlled armoured fighting vehicles, flexible self-propelled artillery and aerial craft. These allow them to unleash a lot of heavy fire on the enemy. Moreover, the use of droids for security and logistical purposes frees up organic personnel for other tasks.

Of course, it is also a way for Enyo to control them. They have access to potent Metadrakes, which are designed to be armour-killers that skydive onto enemy armoured vehicles or vessels to burn through them with their plasma weapons, and fly away. However, these craft have only have an animalistic intelligence. To varying degres, the soldiers are all veterans of the recent Sith Wars. This has given them a degree of experience in fighting hostile Force-Users, but the Vanguard is not a dedicated anti-Force-User unit and does not have any Forcewielders in its ranks.

Strengths:

  • The Vanguard utilises mechanised infantry and mobile, armoured fighting vehicles. This enables it to hit its enemy hard while maintaining mobility. Well-trained in trench warfare and sieges.
  • Augmented by droids, which provide extra firepower and support as well as free up organic personnel for other tasks.
Weaknesses:
  • Focus on conventional engagements and thus may have trouble adjusting to enemies utilising unconventional warfare tactics, especially in terrain that makes it difficult for them to exploit their heavy firepower, such as mountainous or forest environments.
  • Several of their heavier armoured fighting vehicles and some of their aerial craft are controlled by droid brains. While powerful, these designs are thus obviously very teach-heavy. Even with various defensive doodads, they are susceptible to heavy ionic and EMP ordnance, such as artillery grade weapons and bombs.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Contrary to propaganda, not every Sith stormtrooper is an unthinking, dark lord-worshipping drone or a dupe who is just one minute away from joining the plucky rebels the moment he finds out that his masters is evil. Much like not every rebel is a snarky freedom fighter selflessly fighting for truth, justice and the Corellian way. After a long, gruelling war, the Sith Empire fell apart. Various Sith Lords tried to seize what they could from its carcass. With the demise of the Sith Empire and other Sith polities, many soldiers were left adrift.

They had been deprived of their chain of command, support network and employment. The New Imperial Order and the Galactic Alliance proclaimed victory, though the triumph was marred by the spectre of Csilla's destruction. Alas, Sith and Jedi alike have a habit of being purged and then returning, no matter how many times one stamps them out. The New Imperials offered amnesty to Sith soldiers who renounced their masters and pledged fealty to the Iron Sun.

The Vanguard of the Exodites was a formation of former Sith stormtroopers that decided to strike out on their own instead of closing ranks with their former foes or fight on to the death in a war that had clearly been lost. Some were old veterans who had worn the armour of the One Sith stormtrooper corps during that Sith cult's campaign of conquest across the Core Worlds. Others were young conscripts who had been drafted into the Sith war machine as part of last-ditch efforts to avert the collapse.

Their motivations varied, from grudges against the Empire's destroyers to general disillusionment or a more mercenary nature. They were mutineers, deserters, Imperial loyalists without an empire and soldiers of fortune. Some fanatical zealots insisted that there was no choice but to fight to the bitter end. Those were quickly removed. Others wanted to throw in their lot with another Sith cult. A former Sith officer called Erik Jerrod emerged as leader through a mixture of competence, respect and ruthlessness.

The Vanguard took what resources and equipment they could get their hands on. In the process they came across a former ally of the Empire. Enyo was no Sith herself, but had assisted them in several battles, including Dantooine, Ziost and Generis and earlier engagements during the Empire's hey day. She was not interested in bring them back into the fold though.

Instead she made them a job offer that would allow them to thrive without drawing the attention of Sith who might consider them traitors or of governments hostile to Sith servitors that might prosecute them. Originally, the Vanguard had some Sith members, some of whom tried to take over. This problem was nipped in the bud through use of heavy firepower. Enyo had accepted the Sith's credits and fought Jedi for them, but considered unreliable, undisciplined and chaotic. The Cyborg recruited heavily from various units that had deserted or been isolated when the Sith-Imperial lines were broken by the NIO/GA Coalition.
