- Stability: High - As the Ascendant capital, Verun is the focal point of most of the nation's military power. Due to this, threats both internal and external are few and far between. The populated cities are easily the most secure locales on the surface and are designed with weather enemy engagements and environmental terrors.
. - Freedom & Oppression: Founded on a survivalist mentality, Verun, and the Ascendancy overall, grew under an absolute monarchy. The people are, fortunately, guaranteed certain rights including a basic standard of living and employment. Among the citizenry there does exist a bias towards individuals who are not Human/Near-Human passing. While this is not state-sponsored or written into law, discrimination towards these "xeno" individuals is a reality. Beyond this, certain occupations and forms of entertainment are either prohibited or highly moderated by the government. For example, the usage of narcotics is highly illegal, save for confirmed medical needs.
- Military: Verun is a fortified planet with a competent military force. It is more than capable of defending itself from common, Outer Rim threats such as pirates, slavers, and the like.
. - Technology: Galactic Standard
During the height of the Gulag Plague, Naboo attempted to see if there were any worlds untouched by the Galaxy-wide pandemic. A colony ship called Veruna's Ascent was launched into the Southern Arm for this purpose. The Ascent lost contact with Naboo three weeks after departure and was considered a lost cause.
In truth, the Ascent passed through The Hollow - a perilous system plagued by hyper-storms. Damaged and stranded, the colonists managed to emerge from the Hollow and landed upon the first hospitable planet. They called this world Verun, after the vessel, and named the region Shiraya Expanse after the Naboo religion.
The colonists, unable to return to Naboo and unwilling to brave the plague-ridden Galaxy, settled on Verun. Over the centuries, their descendants spread across the region.
As time moved ever forward, these descendants rose up against one another. Verun was a harsh world, with very little in the way of hospitable resources. Thus, clashes first began over the necessities to survive. Then over control. By the early 860s ABY, the Shiraya Expanse was a lawless region, plagued by raids, slavery, murder, and suffering.
In 867 ABY, when the Confederacy of Independent Systems disbanded, the remnants of their government and numerous refugees ventured south and stumbled upon the Expanse. They, too, settled on Verun and dug in against the numerous threats. As they learned to master their harsh surroundings, non-Human individuals from their midst betrayed them to the local warlords. In exchange for creature comforts, they attempted to assassinate the remnant's leadership. Though unsuccessful, many lives were lost in the attempt - and distrust towards non-Human individuals took root within the survivors. This distrust yet lingers.
For the next seven years, the remnant, its refugees, and some of the native peoples organized into a formal nation; the Ascendancy. The hostility of Verun has been properly conquered. The warlords have been pushed off of the planet and the people can now live safe, secure lives.
