PERSONALITY AND BELIEFS
An enterprising and not entirely honest man, Veylin is nonetheless principled in his own way. His simple credo is to not hurt good people. He is amenable to good humor and jokes, but is serious when times call for it. He tends to become angry when witnessing harm done to people he considers to be friends or even just inoffensive. He believes he is someone with strength, and it is his duty to contribute that strength to making the world a better place. He also believes he deserves to get paid for it.
STRENGTHS
Is a good engineer.
Has a good understanding of starships and how to operate them.
Can pilot speeders and land vehicles competently.
Is experienced in combat, with skills comperable to those of a Republic Army officer.
WEAKNESSES
Can be taunted or lured into recklessness by offending his sense of righteousness or ego.
Is a wanted man in Hutt territory, with a high price on his head. This might not be much of a problem, but he also refuses to keep a low profile, meaning that Bounty Hunter trouble is a near certainty.
HISTORY
Born on the Hutt controlled world of Torque to parents who died in an industrial accident when he was fifteen, he was left to make his own way in the world from the time he was a young adult. His family surname, Torque, was common to the low-status families of the world. It was an abbreviation of an old tradition declaring one's place of origin. For instance, 'Veylin of Torque.'
He quickly joined the local Hutt's security forces, receiving training and moving up the ranks of thuggery. There were several retired military officers and skilled bounty hunters in Hutt service, and Veylin made a pest of himself trying to learn everything he could. This proceeded until he was twenty years old with the rank of Enforcer.
Over time, Veylin gained a grave distaste for much of the work the Hutts asked their Enforcers to do. Seeking an escape from the thug life, he became an apprentice to an engineer in one of the local starship 'stripping' shops, which broke down stolen starships for parts or refit them for criminal use in piracy or smuggling.
He spent twelve years in the shop, working his way up to a trusted engineer in his own right. He enjoyed the work, but dreamed of getting offworld and becoming his own man, making his own rules. He was feeling increasingly guilty for his work in Hutt service, and wanted to find a way to live a good life and balance the scales. Several of his coworkers felt the same way, but had no idea how to make it happen.
Then a heavily damaged corvette came into the shop, which the Hutt wanted repaired and refit to act as part of his small defense fleet. Veylin and his coworkers had a meeting, and then got to work. They repaired the ship to the best of their ability, and took it into the system's asteroid belt for system tests, including targeting tests against various rocks floating in the belt. This was something they did frequently with repaired ships, to ensure their work was sound before handing a ship over to a client.
And then they did something unexpected. They stunned the Hutt's Security who were aboard and jumped away towards Galactic Alliance space, taking the ship as their own. As soon as possible, they registered the ship as 'salvage' with the Galactic Alliance and registered themselves as Licensed Privateers. Then they collected bounty on the Hutt's security men, who were all wanted for various crimes in GA space.
Now they could use their skills to make up for some of the bad things they'd done that haunted them all, and get paid doing it as members of Dream Chaser crew in the Wayward Children Privateering Company.
______________________________________________________
The galaxy keeps heating up, and the Wayward Children have struggled to keep up. Eventually, they had to admit that their old Frigate just wasn't doing the job they needed any more. They sold it off, purchasing a CR-120 corvette that could carry a squadron of starfighters. They also had to open recruitment to a larger base of reformed criminals. A risky move, considering how many people might want to infiltrate the group to seek out the bounties on the crew. The plus side is that they can take bigger contracts for bigger payouts, and stand up to bigger foes.
