The Vigilance-class corvette is a hark back to ancient Republic designs such as the Consular-class cruiser and the ever-venerable CR-series of corvettes in design and execution. The Vigilance is suitably wide with its heavy engine array, giving it good speed and maneuverability even for a ship of this class. However, its armaments are modelled generally on the Assassin-class corvette in terms of intent; while the hull could have been chosen as a diplomatic vessel, this ship was turned directly into a weapon of war and given heavier armaments against both starfighters and similar capital ships.

The smallest of the Republic warship classes, the Vigilance is designed for patrol missions and escort duty. It can handle its own with two quad laser cannons top and bottom, plus the five turbolaser turrets present on the hull - three topside (one on the centre line) and two on the underside. While older corvettes had more storage for crew and cargo, the Vigilance sacrifices as much of that as possible for an efficient military design.
