PRODUCTION INFORMATION
Manufacturer: Visanj T’shkali
Affiliation: Closed-Market
Model: Vizier Starship Management Suite
Modularity: Yes; can be configured for use within any size or type of starship.
Production: Minor
Material(s): Code, digits
SPECIAL FEATURES:
- Reduces the need for crew size, as it can control and regulate numerous starship systems and sub-systems simultaneously via a ship’s computer or else integrated into an AI-type system.
- Increases efficiency of onboard systems functions by 83.47% beyond regular performance levels. (Ex.: Systems such as life support, waste management, fuel systems, ship’s diagnostics, power management, and more can be managed by this system; does not include weaponry, piloting, or other combat systems)
- Constantly monitors system activities and performs non-intrusive checks regularly (i.e. without the need to take any system offline, even temporarily, to assess for and address problems, etc.) and increases shipboard safety considerably, helping to prevent over-taxation and crossing into unsafe levels such as overheating engines, exhausting fuel and other resources, etc.
- Can operate onboard industrial systems, such as synthesizers and replicators, to ensure steady and efficient production and complete automation.
- Monitors consumables, such as fuel, water, oxygen, battery strength, even foodstuffs and manages these for most efficient use, thereby enabling faster run-times, longer systems/resources lifespans, and optimal performance efficiency.
- Can direct onboard maintenance systems, and even external repair systems such as repair drones and droids, thereby hastening maintenance and cleaning operations.
- Can operate cargo management and storage operations, including supervising automated loading and unloading, maximizing storage space and safety, ensuring environmental regulations, etc.
- Integrated warning lights, klaxon alarms, and digital user interface keep crewmembers informed and forewarned against potential mishaps, shortcomings, or emergencies when detected.
- Bio-hexacryption anti-slicing software prevents tampering.
- Can be set for users’ tastes and needs, allowing for customized settings, and can be switched off to prevent safety protocols or standard systems’ management from disrupting or blocking actions.
- When connected to communications, regularly self-updates to maintain optimal performance.
STRENGTHS:
- Broad-Range Simultaneous Management: Able to seamlessly and efficiently a number of systems and sub-systems aboard a starship at once, from waste management to power distribution to environmental controls to supervising repair systems, the Vizier can both reduce crew requirements and improve efficiency in a starship’s performance and systems operations.
- Life Preserver: Vizier can not only use probability and heuristic programming to improve safety and efficiency, it can also help to greatly reduce waste and enable starship’s consumables to be used to their optimum degree, thereby extending and improving a ship’s ability to continue at optimal functionality and performance for greater periods of time than the same systems not managed by Vizier would be able to. This equates to greater ‘lifespans’ for fuel supplies, foodstuffs, life support, and more, able to make a notable difference for those situations when refueling/resupply, etc. aren’t possible, including enabling a damaged and drifting ship to maintain life support much longer thus increasing the chances for survival.
- Task Master: Vizier enables a ship’s AI or central computer to monitor and direct various operations such as cargo operations (e.g. loading, unloading, storage, etc.), repair drones, cleaning and maintenance droids, and more, ensuring ‘mundane’ activities run smoothly and efficiently while freeing crew members to other activities.
WEAKNESSES:
- Handle Your Own Conflicts: The Vizier does not control piloting, navigation, targeting/tracking, weapons, or shields, and does not increase/improve combat or flight performance whatsoever.
- Is Nothing Sacred: Despite bio-hexacryption and other anti-tampering measures, a skilled master-level slicer can, with sufficient time and tools, gain access to control programming and wreak havoc on ships using this device.
- It’s Always EMPs and Those Pesky Ions: Without sufficient shielding onboard, Vizier is like any other computer program and a powerful EMP or exposure to ionic energy can disrupt, degrade, or deactivate the program’s operations, requiring a full diagnostics and reboot to factory settings to resume operations, in turn requiring users to reprogram any custom settings once more. This process can take several minutes and depending on timing that can reduce, shutdown, or delay shipboard functionality.
- Not Just Anyone: Using Vizier requires advanced onboard computers or AI systems with exceptional processing power to operate properly, and cannot be used with standard systems.
DESCRIPTION
Able to lessen the burden on starship crews, the Vizier just takes over secondary systems and sub-systems, effectively running the mundane, day-to-day operations and functions of a starship at the safest, most efficient level possible and can function as a stand-alone sub-routine in a starship’s central computer and/or as a component in the programming suite and functionality profile of an AI. Of course, to do this, the computer or AI must be of higher capability and power than normal versions, requiring increased processing and computing power, speeds, and memory available for the Vizier to work at optimal levels.
The Vizier doesn’t add any function to a ship which it is already not capable of doing, it merely ensures that those functions are performed at their very best levels, smoothly and efficiently, reducing crew requirements and enhancing the safety, productivity, and sustainability of the ship and its resources. A sort of virtual ‘efficiency expert’, the Vizier takes over supervision and monitoring of numerous systems throughout a starship. These can include waste management and recycling, onboard production facilities, maintenance and repair, life support, fuel conservation and power distribution, and much, much more. It hasn’t any combat use, per se, and can be switched off by captains and crews to allow for more extreme and unorthodox actions. It won’t improve targeting or weapons, enhance shields, or pilot your ship for you. That’s not its job. Vizier will however ensure your other non-combat systems operate at their best possible levels, extend the durability of consumables and other onboard materials, maximize performance, and even manage repair/maintenance/cleaning droids and drones working around or onboard the ship. It will extend the lifetime of your ship’s resources, enabling you to go further, survive longer, and stay safer than before, and it will ensure your vessel ‘runs like a champ’, leaving you free to attend to other activities and responsibilities instead.
The Vizier can be configured for most any starship size, type, and variant, and allows customizable settings to ensure your ship works exactly the way you want it to, every time, all the time. It’s integrated bio-hexacryption security and anti-sling sub-routines guard against onboard saboteurs and slicers, but a skilled slicer with the right tools and enough time can still bypass these and cause mayhem, so it’s important to have good onboard security also. Furthermore, it’s just a computer program, and so shielding it from EMP/Ion is important to prevent disruption, degradation, or plain deactivation of the Vizier. Failing to do so will require a full self-diagnostic and diagnostic scans of the systems it is set to manage as well, followed by a full reboot to factory settings – requiring you to have input custom settings, parameters, etc. all over again. This can take time, time which in the right moment can have catastrophic shipwide cascading systems failures and leave it and its crew and passengers vulnerable. This makes ensuring computers and the ships they’re on are truly well-protected against EMP/Ion threats.
