SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Factory-standard Ironlungs are cheapish, mass-produced lung replacements ideal for workers in hostile environments; while not necessarily pleasant, they can keep a being alive under all but the most gruesome of conditions. They even work underwater, sort of - users that do not splurge on the right throat enhancement package are likely to find themselves with a bit too much excess water on the inside, after a while.
  • Firelungs are a militarized variant that includes an 'acid gland' able to synthesise sticky, extremely deadly acids from 'spare biomass' (what a user eats). Acidproofing one's throat and adding 'kinetic launch musculature' is equally essential. While it is technically possible to make use of a Firelung without Ironlungs, this is highly inadvisable unless you are sure your lungs can handle acidic fumes.
  • Ironlungs can be equipped with 'adrenal glands' for pumping stimulants directly into the respiratory system.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
  • Breathing Poison: Ironlungs allow users to survive Type II atmospheres and some Type IIIs without a rebreather - neat, huh?
  • Spitting Death: Firelungs (militarized Ironlungs) include throat reinforcement and an acid gland, allowing users to spit acid.
  • Pain is Good: Ironlungs hurt when they work; moderate pollution stings while chemical weapons (and saline water) burn.
  • Carcinogenic: Firelungs - more specifically the acidic fumes they generate - greatly increase the risk of getting cancer.
DESCRIPTION
Pollution, poison, and other nastiness; far from all habitable atmospheres are pleasant and far from all industries are clean.

Terraforming is a solution, but a hideously expensive and time-consuming one. Rebreathers are functional, but wouldn't it be better if one's 'valued employees' were ready to go 24/7 (especially in the event of atmospheric leaks due to poor maintenance)? Always one to listen to the needs of the rich, Vysh-Kolluri set out to design a cybernetic solution to fill the niche - albeit a relatively unpleasant one that requires invasive surgery.

Naturally, the wealthy rarely subject themselves to such treatments; when it comes to their own body, paying for comfort is suddenly worth it.

In order to tap into the immense military budgets of a galaxy at war, Vysh-Kolluri's biotechnicians created a weaponised variant that makes use of acid glands and throat modifications to literally spit acid - a poor choice for a primary weapon, but great as a 'sidearm' or an assassination tool.
