- Incredible willpower, strength in the Force or skill in counter-mentalism techniques can mitigate or even negate the effects (OOC: this device cannot be used to take over another writer's PC without permission).
- Force null zones will interfere with the device and disrupt an ongoing procedure. Suddenly being cut off is disorientating and often painful for the subject.
- The Special Psychological Realignment Matrix can only affect organics. Droids cannot be reprogrammed by it.

"It will not for long. Command code: Revanant-Omega." Subject feels his body go rigid. Eyes widen, but movement is impossible

"Programming closed." Subject's breath is steady, calm.
"You will sleep. You will not remember this session. When you wake up you will not remember seeing me here before."

"It will not for long." tone is gentle and caring. Subject frowns through his migraine. He has the distinct sense of having heard this before. But that's not possible. He dismisses it.
"Welcome back. The pain will not last long. It's the result of the samples we had to take. You've been very brave. Come."
Subject stumbles upright. Headache is diminishing, just as the HRD had said. Takes the droid's hand. "Are you alright?"
"Yes…just a bit dizzy."
"It'll pass. You're making such progress. Faster than we anticipated. You want to get better, don't you?"
"Yes, yes, I do." hesitates
"Is something wrong, dear? You know you can tell me anything."
"While I was out...I did some thinking. I never realised how...much, uh, harm I caused. I'm so ashamed." Pats hand "Sounds like you're the taking the first step. No one's beyond redemption...if they seek it out. You'll get better, and we'll help you."
It is the mark of a civilised society that it evolves from purely retributive to rehabilitative justice. The cycle of 'eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth' is self-perpetuating. Unfortunately, many prisons are not focused on rehabilitating those who can be rehabilitated, making them see the error in their ways and weaning them off antisocial behaviour. Instead they replicate the conditions that drove an individual to criminality, be it through incompetence or malevolence.
Indeed, some private prisons do this deliberately in order to ensure constant demand. In other prisons, rules are so lax and the administration is so corrupt that a notorious crime boss can run his criminal network and order hits on foes while incarcerated. Archangel aims to be different. A stay in an Archangel prison is a transformative experience. A felon who is released after serving time will be a completely different person. Utilising the latest advancements in psychology and behavioural modification, Archangel aims to help felons become productive, law-abiding citizens who understand right from wrong.
The Special Psychological Realignment Matrix is a powerful tool in this regard. The device is a large machine that resembles a cube, hooked up to one or several tubes prisoners can be wheeled into. The machine acts as an amplifier and focuser of Force energy, projecting a psychic field. The signal is controlled by a Force-Sensitive Shard. In addition, several NeuroDigital Matrices have been incorporated into the machine, augmenting the machine by forming a neural network.
A Shard is quite removed from organic concerns. So while it gives the machine power and direction, the matrices give the Shard understanding when the mind of an organic subject is scanned and mapped. This is followed by a process of behavioural modification while they experience a simulated reality. Detractors may call this brainwashing, but this is a malicious rumour. A subject is imbued with desirable traits such as obedience to and respect for lawful authority. In order to calm subjects, the procedure is commonly carried out as part of a medical checkup.
Subjects will usually dream during the procedure. The process is long, but painless. It may be accompanied by memory alteration in order to wean subjects off selfish, socially harmful behaviour and allow them to experience a situation from an alternate point of view. This is, of course, meant to build empathy. It is ill-advised to interrupt the subject during a procedure. Such rude intrusion may lead to unfortunate side-effects, such as memory loss, hallucinations or erractic behaviour. Certain subjects may require multiple sessions for the procedure to fully take root. While time-intensive, this has the advantage that staff can monitor how well a subject is adjusting. The process can also be used to teach a subject different skills. Not only does this facilitate the convict's integration into the job market upon release, it can enable him to earn money through honest labour while he is still serving his sentence.
Time during the procedure can get confusing at times. A subject may feel like it was only exposed to it for a couple minutes, but in reality hours have passed and vice versa. Archangel Asclepius medical HRDs will be present during every procedure to provide assistance to organic subjects. For some mind-boggling reason, a few Archangel employees who shall remain anonymous have started calling it the Voidshadow Dominator Engine. They have been strongly rebuked. While undoubtedly in good humour, words have power and can lead to...misunderstandings. Of course, rehabilitation is only one step in a longer-term process that must aim to eliminate the socio-economic conditions that lead to criminality. Archangel aims to work with all stakeholders in society to address the roots of the problem.
