STRENGTHS
- Bulwark: The Vourdalak is designed to be the strongpoint of a given battle, possessing powerful thermal shielding that can see off all but the most formidable of incoming fire.
- Fell-Handed: The Vourdalak gives as good as it gets, possessing a profuse armament designed to pound enemy vessels to scrap.
- Planetary Invader: What hangar space the Vourdalak does have is mostly devoted to massive C-9979 heavy landers waiting disassembled in storage, and it is thus very capable of supporting and supplying ground forces.
- Bomber Vulnerability: Despite maintaining a minor point defense array, the Vourdalak is far less prepared to face down bombers than its predecessor, being more suited to engaging other capital ships.
- Poor Fighter Complement: Much of the Vourdalak's hangar space has been given over to additional power supplies for its powerful shielding array, leaving it with a less than stupendous complement, and forcing it to rely on other ships for this task.
While the attempted modernization of its ground forces was ongoing, Helix Solutions began to turn its eyes to its ancient, crumbling, Clone Wars surplus fleet.
Realizing that, with their comparatively limited resources, they could never hope to match the fleets of the major players in quantity, they could at least attempt a fair showing in quality. The Vourdalak was the answer to this challenge on the battleship front.
Designed to be a semi-unbreakable ship of the line, the Vourdalak is relatively rare, and is dispatched only to important battlefields. When it arrives, it commonly does so with a small escort of frigates and destroyers, or in higher-priority circumstances may appear in numbers.
Equipped with multiple, redundant thermal shielding generators, one typically activates if and when another fails, resulting in defenses capable of absorbing a staggering amount of punishment. Even should these bulwarks fail, the unshielded vessel is capable of taking a battering, clad in expensive layers of armor.
The armament is no slouch either, with the vessel being capable of projecting a blizzard of turbolaser fire from batteries arranged to provide the maximum battlefield coverage. It also retains the Providence Class's formidable torpedo array, allowing the vessel to serve as a missile boat when required, or bombard ground targets to powder, and comes stock with mass driver cannons to batter down armored hulls.
The Vourdalak is the consummate brawler, but like many giants, it can be toppled by a stone in the wrong place. Its point defense array is modest, and may not stand up to determined assaults from a large number of bombers.
Likewise, the appalling power requirements of its profusion of shielding and weaponry demand that much of the ship be given over to power generation, leaving little room for a hangar. What room the hangar does possess is by necessity taken up by heavy landing craft. While the ship does retain a token fighter complement, this is more to support ground forces or see off pirates, and will be woefully inadequate to defend the vessel from the ravages of small, agile bombing craft.
