ADVANCED SYSTEMS
STRENGTHS
  • Advanced Sensor Suite :: To fulfill the ship's design purpose as a scout or reconnaissance vessel, Alora made sure to upgrade or install sensor arrays to capture as much detail about the environment, ship, fortification, or celestial body/event necessary to complete a mission. Some sensors are always active -- detecting approaching vessel, large energy spikes, and so on -- while others require deliberate activation because of how 'noisy' they can be -- they could give away her position if activated negligently.
  • Stealth System + ECM :: The AVZ-X Stealth Frame provides a passive form of sensor masking to perform recon on an enemy stronghold. Meanwhile, Electronic Countermeasures adds an active layer of sensor masking to make it more difficult for enemies to get a lock when flying under the radar is no longer an option.
  • Enhanced ION Defense :: Electromagnetic shielding and some energy sinks provide the modified VT-88 with more protection against EMPs or Ion Cannons than most other ships.
  • Machine/Robotics Bay :: Alora's ship is her home and workshop even if she owns a planetside dwelling. She spent a great deal of credits refitting the ship and acquiring various tools and machines to make crafting, assembling, and repairing mechanical and robotic gear. They are more than large enough to work on a speeder or large battle droid, and the ventral airlock is accessible via the Machine Bay.
  • Microjump :: The hyperdrive and navigation computer were given an overhaul to allow for a short-distance, intra-system jump or two without too much strain on the engines.
WEAKNESSES
  • Limited Armament :: The modified VT-88 has a limited armament for its class to house a large reactor and shiny rims. It sports a pair of forward-facing, fixed-position turbolaser cannons at the tips, and a pair of forward-facing, dorsal-mounted launchers to either side of the command deck.
  • Not a Damage Sponge :: Deflector shields will help survive for a time, but eventually they can be overcome especially if caught in the middle of an enemy formation. Once that happens all the modified VT-88 has going for it is sheer speed and agility to get out of harms way.
  • Stealth System :: The AVZ-X Stealth Frame is a network of baffles to prevent enemy sensors from detecting the ship, but if the reactor is running at full power with main engines operational there's a good chance a good sensor array will pick the ship up due to leakage. For the Stealth Frame to be truly effective it's necessary to lower the reactor output -- this normally means no raising deflector shields and where possible cutting main engines (operating on inertia and thrusters). The ship's own sensors may also only operate at short range, or may need to utilize passive sensors (e.g. proximity alarm) when going up against cutting edge detection technology. The Stealth Frame is also not a cloaking device - the ship can still be seen visually.
  • 'Micro'jump :: The hyperdrive and navigation computer have been upgraded to allow for intra-system jumps over short distances, but like any microjump system carelessness can throw a ship widely off-course -- potentially into a hazardous part of the system, like an asteroid belt. Also overuse of jumping can result in engine damage; hyperdrives were built for sustained usage, not jumping side to side rapidly.
  • No Medical Bay :: The sterilization field that sweeps the Robotics Bay annihilates microbiological organic matter (bacteria, viruses, etc.). So, long as you don't mind the creepy machinery looming over you the ship has somewhere the wounded can be treated. Not comfortably, or more than one at a time, but somehow you'll live.
  • Limited Crew Quarters :: Sure, the modified VT-88 can transport a small group of people. Long as the journey is short or no one minds sleeping on the floor. There's one room with a dedicated bed to it. Maybe a cot on the bridge.

Alora picked up a 'lightly' used VT-88 when she struck out on her own at sixteen making runs to nearby systems. In the beginning she spent enough credits to keep it flying, but when all else was lost and all she had left was the ship Alora began pouring almost all of her credits into upgrading it. Considerable work was put into refitting almost the entire interior of the ship, and even reinforcing the ship's framework with an assortment of material she'd later dub the AVZ-X Stealth Frame. Every credit she spent only enabled her to earn more credits, which they went back into the ship, and so the cycle continued over and over again. A welcome distraction from being on her own for so long in a hostile galaxy.

Information paid handsomely, but Alora personally enjoyed tinkering, designing, and fixing mechanical equipment and droids. While not the first thing to get added, the Machine Bay and Robotics Bay on the lowest level of the ship are far from the least decked out area of the ship. The many tools and machines are present to handle repairing the ship and other products in her travels; this not only enabled acquiring credits, but provided a hobby and welcome distraction from 'go there, spy on these people, smuggle this out' missions.

Over time the modified VT-88 became a state-of-the-art, if one-of-a-kind, stealth ship for hire. It wasn't the most fierce ship in the galaxy, nor able to take a blast from a superweapon head on, but if you needed a ship that could elude most ships at sublight and slip into war zones unseen then the Gambit was your ship.
