Captain Larraq
Capitalist
So, as a recent invasion has brought to my attention, not all vehicles are created equal. That should seem like a 'duh' thing and, in truth, Ive always been aware of it... But I hadn't realized that quite so many people were incapable or unwilling to look at what they have and what the enemy has and only bring enough Tech to match them.
It also makes me realize that fleeting is the gentleman's way of waging war. Thanks to the guide, 10,000 meters of ships will always be roughly as strong as any other 10,000 meters of ships. It's simply a matter of how you use what you bring. And thanks to the standard OOC protocol to agree to a max fleet length, naval combat is actually quite fair and balanced. And with only a few exceptions I can think of, you get very little powergaming from naval commanders.... or, I'd like to think so anyway. The ones Ive faced or dealt with have been quite professional.
Anyway... Vehicles (and species that get treated as vehicles) have no power scale. There is no guide to their construction and no OOC limitations on their use. Recently, this has left me feeling like I've chosen to take 10,000 meters to play with... And then gotten swatted by a 50,000 meter fleet for no other reason than the simple fact that the opposing writers didnt know any better.
I guess what I'd like to see is a type of power scale done by overall tonnage instead of ship length, with a couple basic real world examples showing people what a vehicle should weigh.
Also, there are a number of species that are clearly vehicle analogs. I'd like to propose that these type of species be required to submit a vehicle submission in addition to a species submission in the same manner that starship submissions often get told to make seperate tech submissions for various components.
From here, you can get rid of the bickering about "He through this at me." "You through that at me first!" "Thats because you used that other thing!"
And just have a nice, simple 'Maximum Tonnage' of vehicles and war-organisms and end up with fair fights on the ground that are determined by tactics and roleplaying instead of just spamming bigger toys.
