- Shield Buster: The ax-head prow of the Warhammer was designed to brute-force open a gap in the defensive shield of a planet under siege by the Empire through a complex network of field disruptor technology built into the prow, thereby bypassing the main obstacle preventing the Empire's deployment of ground troops to the surface below. The field disruptors deactivated any part of the planetary shield they connected with, opening a gap long enough to force the front of the Warhammer to widen the gap.
- Heavy Carrier: The Warhammer also possessed a series of interconnected hangar bays which, once a planetary shield had been breached, were situated close enough to the ax-head to deploy starfighters directly below the planetary shield. There was also a large enough gap running through the middle of the Warhammer to allow larger ships, such as frigates and cruisers, to travel through into the planet's atmosphere from the other side of the shield.
- No Dedicated Capital Ship Weaponry: While resplendent in anti-starfighter weapon emplacements, the Warhammer lacked the dedicated turbolaser batteries which could contend with capital ships like destroyers and battlecruisers. An escort fleet of capital ships was assembled to guard the Warhammer against enemy assaults for just that reason.
- Low Maneuverability: The Warhammer's titanic bulk is unlike most other starships in the galaxy, and requires a great deal of propulsion to maneuver even in the vacuum of space. Smaller thrusters help align the dreadnought while transferring from open space to the upper atmosphere of a planet, where the majority of its combat operations take place.
War requires innovation. The Empire's many campaigns across the galaxy have brought it into conflict with dozens upon dozens of systems that had resisted their overtures of annexation through force. Whenever a system planned to make a stand against the Empire, they often did so by raising a planetary shield to draw out the conflict into a protracted siege. As always, the Empire would eventually break through the planetary shield, but not after a great deal of time and effort had been expended in bringing it down through sheer brute strength.
Hence the development and creation of the Warhammer.
A massive dreadnought shaped like an ax-head, the Warhammer was made with one singular purpose in mind. To smash through a planetary shield and disgorge a mass amount of starfighters and dropships to the surface below. The narrower prow of the dreadnought gradually widened further back and was outfitted with a complex series of advanced field disruptor technology that could counteract the typically unmitigable shielding deployed around planets. Interconnecting hangar bays located in this region of the dreadnought could then launch a multitude of starfighters, bombers, troop transports, and vehicle transports the moment they slipped beneath the surface of the planetary shield.
The drawbacks of such a ship were inherent to its nature. It was large and required a great deal of power for propulsion in the high atmosphere, especially enough to keep it from crumbling under its own bulk and smashing into the planet's surface or the shield before it could breach it. Several engine banks located on the sides of the vessel counteracted the planet's gravity well by activating when the ship entered the atmosphere and pushed against the forces of gravity trying to pull the ship down. To accommodate all of the fuel and power generations such a feat would require, the Warhammer was only outfitted with anti-starfighter weaponry and had to rely on a dedicated escort for protection from larger ships.
The commander of the Warhammer was a female Besalisk known as Yan Grex who held the rank of Admirallis (Lord Admiral), whose stubborn and persistent dedication to carrying out military operations made her a perfect candidate to be put in command of such a vessel.
