Malintis didn't know why they were always running around on these mercy missions. On one hand he understood that his Lumi Snow saw the world as a bleeding heart and she had to fix it. But on the other he knew that one day she would find herself on the wrong side of everything and her luck would run out.

That was, of course, what he was here for. To make sure that when her luck ran out, there would be a blade to end that despicable destroyer. He sighed, sinking low towards the ground.

"Anything?" he heard her voice in his ear comm. Something he was still coming to terms with. These magical devices that could do strange things. It was ungodly.

"Not much," the old hunter said rising to his full height, 'the boot prints keep going in that direction. If we are going to find this man, it will be a challenge to say the least."

"It had to be Apatros," Carl the redhead bemoaned from beside her.

Malintis didn't even bother with a snort as he began to carry on through this wasteland of hell.

Carl was not comfortable in a place like this. Hundreds of dangerous things could go wrong and it was far from the office work and paperwork he felt comfortable with. All the same he was loyal to a fault and it was for extra college credit after all. So the rescue mission went on.

He walked alongside Doctor Snow, following Malintis as he tracked the steps. They had found the crashed ship but the slaves on onboard had gotten off, fleeing for their lives. And understandably so. These slavers were know canibals. But it still didn't make being the hero any easier......

Carl shifted the pack on his shoulder and sighed again.

"Don't worry," Lumi assured him, placing a gloved hand on his shoulder. "We will be alright."

He wasn't sure why but the redhead felt a wave of relief cover him on her words. It made him walk taller and feel more confident. "Thanks, Doctor. You always know the right words to say."

Lumi always took her role as a healer and her abilities to read minds seriously. She wasn't about to abuse those and always use her skills to the best of her knowledge for the betterment of others. As she touched Carl, she let a little bit of her strength go into him and felt the boy's spirits brighten.

Her smile widened warmly, "Of course."

"We have come to a ruined small city," LAINA informed her. "Scans indicate that there are 20 lifeforms within."

"They are here," Lumi announced. "I can hear them. And the scans show they are here."

"History indicates this is an old abandoned mine town," LAINA added.

Lumi looked to Malintis, "Be gentle. Let's fan out and search for them wider."

LAINA was an AI whos sole purpose in this galaxy was to serve Lumi Snow. Her maker had programmed her for service and in a way she enjoyed it--if an AI could enjoy something. There was also a sense of connection between her and the Mistress; she had been grown from Lumi's own neurons and could almost share the similar blindness traits.

As her mistress carried LAINA deeper into the ruins, the AI kept her sensors on high alert. These sorts of places were filled with perils. It was her job to make sure Lumi never felt their bane. LAINA kept in connection with the Chrome Ark overhead, pinging off it with its sensors and giving a detailed imagery of the place and all that could be felt.

"Mistress, thermal images indicate the main amount of lifeform readings have congregated within the main warehouse seven meters ahead of you."

"Thank you, LAINA," the doctor said gently.

LAINA felt a shiver of delight on her nutrient fed cerebral mass. These words, she existed for.

Lumi followed her AI's information, making her way towards the shed. She could feel a variety of life forms within the building but none were malicious. There was a general feeling of fear. Anxiety. Fear was just as dangerous as Anger the doctor knew. She reached the door, her hand grasped the rusty door handle.

"Here, let me," Malintis interjected. "Just in case."

Lumi took a step back, "Your right."

Her fingers gently curled around her sword as Malintis pulled the door wide open.

"Hey guys, it's alright. We are here to rescue you," Carl said with a winsome tone.

A wave of relief flooded her a she released her sword. She let out a sigh. Thank the gods, it was the slaves they had been tracking to rescue.

Carl had never been so glad to see unwashed, stinking people before. Ok. Maybe that was a bit harsh but he was awefully terrified that something bad---

"Get down!" Malintis barked.

Carl dropped to the ground prone as the blaster bolts began to fly through the air. Fear and adrenaline began to pump through his veins as a quartet of blaster rifle wielding pirate like people came charging down the streets.

"Get in the shed," Malintis shouted as he pulled Lumi into it.

The fearful redhead wasted no time clamboring inside with the surviving slaves.

"We have to get out of here," Lumi shouted over the sound of blaster fire. "But it's going to take too long to bring the shuttle around. We need a faster way."

"I am sure there's a transport here somewhere," Carl said hopefully.

"I am detecting a land speeder two buildings down at the closed down mine building," LAINA answered in Lumi's ear.

The doctor pointed, "There is one that way. We can get there but--"

"I will give you cover," Malintis cut in. "Take the back door. Carl will lead you."

Lumi felt the fear in their rescuees. She gave them a smile and stretched out To them softly, "We will take care of you. Follow us. Everything will be alright."

She felt a glimmer of confidence as the others gave a myriad of affirmations. She felt Carl grip her gloved hand and pull her out the door and through the streets.

Carl felt the weight of responsibility on his shoulders as he hurried through the streets. Stray blaster bolts splattered around them like rain. The freed slaves with them scrambled after him for the cover they so desperately needed. Behind them, he could hear the screams of terror and pain as Malintis and the thugs clashed in the shed. Carl had no doubt that the man could hold his own against most anyone but--they had blasters. All he had was swords.

They finally made it into the abandoned mine building. The massive brick walls rose for what seemed like forever. Standing in the center of the room was a massive, bulky and rusty land speeder. Carl pulled the driver's door open wide and clambored in, slamming it shut behind him. The slaves hurried into the bed of the speeder, Lumi pulled herself into the shotgun seat before he gave the engine a try.

At first it rolled over, giving a grumble of complaint but refusing to start. He licked his lips before trying again. Sweat rolled off his body in waves as eternity passed. Finally the speeder roared to life and he stomped on the gas petal.

Lumi gripped the dashboard as she suddenly felt the speeder hurling ahead, "Carl, you have to warn me before you do that!"

"Sorry, ma'am," he said hastily.

She heard the sound of a massive impact and felt a second, smaller jolt as they tore through the wall. The speeder lurched to the left and the right, Lumi struggled to stay upright in the cab of this cavernous vehicle as Carl maneuvered. She could hear the singing sound of blaster bolts hissing through the air. Through her telepathy she could hear as much as feel the sounds of the thugs dying at Malintis' trained blade. It was a true fight, the man had spent many years as a hunter not a bodyguard or a soldier.

However, when hunting, he still gained an edge over the others.

"Mistress, would you like me to land the ship with the shuttle?" LAINA asked.

"Yes," Lumi said at last, "Carl, get us to the shuttle, LAINA will take care of the rest."

"Yes Ma'am," he managed before fishtailing into the next road. Lumi heard a blaster bolt shatter her window and cowered for cover.

These vagabonds did not fight with honor, but Malintis was skilled enough even then to out match them. He only had to keep them busy enough for his escape with the others, but he could have ended them all here and now--but that was not his way.

As one of them leveled their rifle at him, the bladesmen swung, the edge of his sword swatting it the side. He surged forward, one free hand gripped the rifle as his shoulder drove the man further back, stumbling in reverse. Malintis looked back, just in time to see one of the others aiming his next round at the warrior. He pivoted out of the way just in time, the shot tore through his grappled victim's chest, snuffing his life out.

Suddenly the metal vehicle tore through the wall, Carl, that strange redheaded child, was at the controls. Malintis side-kicked one of the marauders standing beside him before swinging up into the bed of this massive land speeder. Blaster bolts flecked off its worn surface as they fled from the remains of the mine town. He gave a sigh of relief before sheathing his blade.

LAINA let the Chrome Ark settle on the rocky surface like a dove on a branch. The immensely heavy vessel for her was nothing more than a shell or a toy. Her CPU capacity made her able to even pilot massive capital ships for a short period of time. She kept track of Lumi, Malintis, and Carl as they came steadily closer. She didn't want any more mishaps. The AI was somewhat ashamed that she hadn't picked up on the marauders. There was no excuse for that. She would work harder next time.

As the heavy speeder drew closer, LAINA opened the large cargo bay ramp. When the vehicle was aboard, she began the lift off, warming the engines and gently swooping into the air. In the bowels of this vessel was the most precious cargo she could have ever carried--Lumi, Carl, and Malintis. When the Ark entered space, she docked the Shuttle into it. Satisfied, the AI turned her attention inward.

Lumi, Carl, and Malintis were working to get the people from the speeder and to the medical attention they needed. The AI noted the cortosis packed away within the speeder's back. She would tell the Mistress-later.

"We are in space and ready for hyperspace, where shall we go?" LAINA asked.

"Home, to the University."

"I anticipated that request and pre-set the coordinates there," she said. "Jump in five seconds."

"Thank you, LAINA."

The AI let herself savor that for a full second. She had taken care of her Mistress. Her Mistress was safe. She was a good AI, a good program who had done her work in a galaxy so full of programs that were incompetent.

"Thank you, Mistress."
