What do you find Challenging?
A Roleplay Discussion

To preface for new members, I'm Jay and I ask strange questions. So here's two for March 2016,

Q: What do you find challenging to do on this website?
Q: Is that enjoyable or frustrating? or both?

What do I find challenging? Well...

The quality and quantity of my writing is nowhere near any of you guys' level
I dunno much SW lore so other then commonly seen/used Force Powers I'm clueless
Dunno diddly squat about Lightsaber forms and such
Not well versed on SW races other then ones typically seen like Rodian, Twi'lek, Wookiee, Hutt etc.
Dunno where to start on the forum
Don't know much about ships in SW
Lack of SW knowledge outside of the movies and KOTOR and SWTOR series

Do I find all that enjoyable? HELL NO

Yeah, that's about it for me lol. I suck xD

Q: What do you find challenging to do on this website?
I find it challenging remember to write in my narrative more about the background scenes and what is going on. I need to work on that.
Q: Is that enjoyable or frustrating? or both?
Both. But I've noticed if i keep on reading more books, it helps with that bit. xD

PvP I love this part the most, but does getting annoying when fighting a potential force god.

Q: What do you find challenging to do on this website?
I find it difficult to write in invasions without it feeling repetitive. I like invasions, and the idea of them, but I end up writing a prescriptive set of moves versus a story. Obviously not my intention going into it.

Q: Is that enjoyable or frustrating? or both?
It really depends, but unless there's an original twist to the invasion or duel, I find it more on the frustrating side. This can probably be improved by focusing more on character development, exploring more unique ways to fight and tools to use, and working out ahead of time with the dueling partner what we'd like to accomplish - for the characters especially, not necessarily winning or losing.

Q: What do you find challenging to do on this website?
To create post material when a writing partner doesn't give you much to work with in their post.
Q: Is that enjoyable or frustrating? or both?
I'd say its a tad frustrating. Thankfully I havent had to hardly deal with this in greater quantities yet, but when I'm not given much to go on i'm just pulling ideas out of a hat.

Q: What do you find challenging to do on this website?
I have a lot of trouble dealing with the "timey-wimey-handy-wavey" nature of threads. I like my characters to have a reasonable progression, and simply ignoring unfinished details in order to continue threading leads me to the second question.

Q: Is that enjoyable or frustrating? or both?
Most certainly both. It isn't frustrating to the point of me flipping any tables. However, it definitely has me sitting on threads that have no chance of completing and not wanting to start any new ones as a result. On the flip side (not of the table, mind you) that persnickety-ness has gotten me some awesome threads and has allowed me to learn something very important: pacing. Threads die because they aren't exciting to the writers participating. Learn better pacing, and you can overcome that, and hopefully less of your threads get mired in needless dialogue.

A: Sharing. - I love to write solo. Which is probably the complete opposite to RPing. Solo I can build a story, a world, an atmosphere, characters, emotions, pacing, euphoria, and everything else with grand purpose and lofty specifications. Alas and remarkably challenging to me. Co-op writing means I have to share many of those responsibilities with other writers. Which often has the consequences of leaving all of those elements and attributes conflicting. Or worse, disingenuous. So many times I find myself sitting down to reply to a thread and I have to remind myself... Now Jay. You're not here to write your fantasy smut. You're here to contribute. Thusly, contribute wisely. Not, completely.

A: Both. - Like a sniper who has already gotten very good at shooting. I'm not practicing shooting anymore. I'm practicing marksmanship. I aim to hit the mark. Not above it. Not below it. Just right in the middle of every bodies expectations. To express my expertise not in caliber, but in finesse. Both OOC and IC.

And that is one of the most challenging things I have ever experienced. Ugh... :(

Q: What do you find challenging to do on this website?
  • Completing a story arc. Whether with another writer, etc.. I just never seems to happen, and I find almost every thread I am in stalls but a very few rare ones. Less than a handful in my year or two here. It's to the point I get frustrated and tire of the place really. Not sure if it's me or otherwise.

Q: Is that enjoyable or frustrating? or both?

  • Even with my masochistic ways, the answer is an obvious one of frustration.

Q: What do you find challenging to do on this website?

Writing combat by myself. I just can't get the right kind of flow. My mind is built to fight against other people, and when I do I write it post by post. But when it's jsut me, it feels so wrong to try and write the fighting by myself. It's like I ruined it.

Q: Is that enjoyable or frustrating? or both?

Frustrating. I want to be able to write stories all on my own, but it's just so difficult to figure out the flow of combat alone.

Q: What do you find challenging to do on this website?
I find that most of my stories are fine, but I always feel like I do not write adequately for someone who has been Rping for several years. (be on and off as it may). I get the notion that people seem to drop my stories more often or just don't keep up with me because it's boring, or it's slow going. Honestly, I love the longer threads with just one other person. But what bothers me about it, is that I feel like it's my fault for making the thread die. Even though I was the one posting almost the same day/within 48 hours.
Q: Is that enjoyable or frustrating? or both?
Frustrating. I want to see how I can fix this. Is it just that I have a different style of writing that some like, and others don't? or is it just that they fall out of line with the thread and don't continue? As well, I know that I am guilty of this fact myself. There have been a few times where I just cant continue in a thread because the writer isn't providing enough information, or it just feels repetitive. So I want to work better on sticking to a thread when I say I will be there.
