What is canon? (baby don't hurt me)

Serious question. So I'be been here since maybe, November 2016 and I've never bothered to ask this question. What do we consider canon? Is everything canon or just the movies? Are the novels canon? Is the Yuuzhan Vong war canon? WHAT IS CANON?!?!?

[member="Jamie Pyne"] ok, but that adds another question. Which canon is preferred? There are some conflicting notes in both canons. For example, in the Fate Of The Jedi novels, Luke Skywalker is Exiled by Chief of State Daala. In The Force Awakens, he went into self-exile. Which of those points would be correct here? (I apologize if I'm bothering you)

It's not a bother to ask questions. SWRP is around 850+ years after the events of the films, therefore by and large most things pertaining to canon characters would be legend and myth by this point, so in all honesty you could realistically have your character believe whatever they want. A lot of history and information was lost during the Gulag Plague, which helps to pad those legends. In reality, the timeline here is very flexible.

EU characters count as canon and cannot be utilized.
