What kind of doms do you like?

Double entendre in the thread title is totally unintentionally. Totally. :p

Thought I'd post this here since technically it's about dominions. Apologies if it's the wrong forum.

Recently we've had a fairly long string of doms (Zygerria, Midvinter, Tygara, Morellia, Ossus and currently Saleucami). Some of them were heavily combat-based, others more diplomatic or a combination.

Likewise they differed because some had a fixed story and a tighter narrative structure, while others were very free-form and had generalised objectives.

So I was wondering which sort people preferred. Especially since I imagine it could be useful in planning future doms (think we could use a break after Saleucami is done to recharge, especially since holidays are upcoming).

If it is fun then I am all for it.... or ones where me, Sera and Nima get spray bottles to keep Val in check.... those could also be fun. Oh we should do one for one of those shock collars everytime he thinks about twileks gets a zap.

or just run around the galaxy doing good deeds and having a grand adventure

I think for me it varies from planet to planet. If it's a planet with a rich history, then it's easier to figure out the focus of the dominion which in turn makes me feel invested as a writer, since it feels like you're adding to its history. Whether it's a cannon or member-created planet doesn't matter that much, but the cannon worlds do unavoidably tend to have more to go on. :)

I, too, like when there's a history in that planet, a blank story that we can fill in with our little stories.

Random dominions are fun too, yet I like them more when there is a bit of background :)

Wait.... Wouldn't he just kinda end up spending the whole Dom convulsing and foaming at the mouth then?

Doms that engage the most amount of writers and characters personally!

So I favor threads asking questions like this, you awesome person!

Muses preference:

Personal preference with Kei is a set mission with a padawan/knight etc
Nato writes well in adventure threads, freeform for her
Taiden threads that require tact, being subtle, research or diplomacy etc. (Basically either)

A good solid cannon history helps, and makes it much easier to form up objectives. But regardless of whether a blank canvas or not, it is the starting story that grabs me and good objectives. Combat orientated all the time I find less interesting, but rather some intrigue and mystery ...

I agree we should have a break from them until the new year so lets just finished Saleucami.

I like dominions with solid overarching stories. Whether it's repelling an invasion or being in a swoop race I find free-form doms tend to peter out. Giving people the freedom to do anything dilutes the member base and most people usually won't bother creating their own plots especially alone.

Thus I like to give a strong story to doms with the option that people can free-form if they want, but more objectives are set for the rest.

we never got to do the dance contest dominion. we could have watched

I'd rather get shaved than harm anyone. Violence is a last resort.

Personally, I think best Dominons give just an over arching objective, but allows people to decide how to go about them. If it's too linear, then your forced into one direction. Keeping it open, with multiple objectives of different types, allows characters to engage one another and their surroundings in a different manner and drive development of said characters.

And, yes, a good history always helps.

Just my two cents, though.
