So what is the story of this site? I've read some of the timeline stuff, but it wasn't clear; at least not for me. We have various Major Factions that take up space on the map via territories (influence clouds, we call them).
Major factions can spread their influence either by utilizing dominions to take over planets or even entire hexes, or they can invade another Major Faction's influence cloud.
The First Order is one such major faction, and I'm certain [member="Natasi Fortan"] would love to explain what they're all about. They are not the same First Order as you've seen in Episode VII.
We do not, however, exist in the same frame of time as the new trilogy - we're about 800 or so years into the future, with a large plague that persisted for about 400 years which plunged the galaxy into a dark age for that period of time. Lots of information was lost, from history to culture.

We also have minor factions, which are small factions and groups of people which do not control areas on the map but can potentially become major factions.
All factions are player made and ran, so starting your own minor faction and driving it to major to take over the galaxy is certainly a possibility!

To directly answer one of your questions, the board operates on a combination of Site events (which are detailed in the timeline, which might appear vague as they are the posters we make at the start of them) as well as player-run RP. The members shape what happens in the galaxy, and staff does a few Site events every year for fun.
