When You're Gone

"Did I wait too long?
Moments gone and now wasted,
Coming back to home,
It feels wrong, changes haunt me-"

Zandra downed another drink in one go. The song rang a little too true now. She'd never considered the lyrics before. Parsec had evolved as a band since she'd been away from Coruscant. They'd gotten big. Big enough to play across the Galaxy. Their songs were popular, they had tour dates, shirts, hats, patches for jackets. And yet, for some reason, they still came back here to play. They always came back home to Coruscant, to this little run-down cantina that the locals simply called Nameless.

And even after years away, they still saw her in the audience and smiled and waved. She was still a fan, and they were still her friends. The Twi'lek Synth player grinned at her, rows of piercings along his jaw twinkling in the bright stage lights. She waved and smiled, but her heart sank. This felt wrong. She was home, the only home she ever felt comfortable in, and yet she felt such a tremendous guilt just for being here.

The rest of the crew was who knew where now. Off drinking elsewhere or something. Spending the credits from the last voyage. Wasting. Zandra just finished wiring her cut of their earnings to the village on Mandalore, her children. This was supposed to be her time off, but all she could think about was how she should be home with her kids, or out looking for Cal.

"Taking a piece of my heart,
When you're gone-"

After all this time, still no word. No message. No sign. No hope. For all she knew, he was dead somewhere. Gone forever. Most of the clan seemed to have come back. Not Cal. Her children came back. Not Cal. And she was losing hope. She had nightmares about him, lying in a ditch, a field, an alley somewhere, dead, bleeding, rotting away to the bone, his flesh bloodless and bloated, eye sockets empty, eaten away by bacteria and insects.

"Taking a piece of my heart,
That's how it always starts...

When you're gone."

Zandra stood up when the song ended, clapping so loud her hands hurt. The lead vocalist, a humanoid woman with a shaved head and heavy blue eyeshadow grinned and nodded as she announced the next song. Zandra saw another drink set in front of her and she gave the bartender, a rodian named Sah'ri, an affectionate nod in thanks. Even he could tell he needed it tonight.
