Witches/Warlocks and Chaos Writers

Draven Asterisk

Jaded Prince of Ansion
I've never been big into the Nightsisters, or the Krath Witches. I've never really delved deep into Sith Sorcery or Alchemy. Now, when I look at it from a fantasy point of view, its just a science, and a little hand waverem (not a lot but some). But I know this is Star Wars, and that some people have already placed a nice little path for these sorta characters...so here's my question(s).

Q. What to remember when writing a Witch/Warlock/Wizard/Sorcerer/Magick User?

Q. The Dos and Donts to Magick?

Q. Is it really just the Force but just more magical in how one taps into it? Or well Spiritual?

Q. Suggestions on what to read and study up on before I continue down this path?

Q. Can Magick Force Using people things be able to alter and create their own kinds of abilities with this path of the Force?

I plan to have Draven mixed in somewhere between a witch and dark jedi. Maybe go deeper into the concept, but that's the basics.

Honestly...I am just very confused, and walking on eggshells it feels writing this kind of character. Any and all help would be amazingly appreciated.

A1:

Well this one is a bit tricky but I can try to answer best I can. The witches/warlocks are a much more mysterious, work in the shadows bunch. They don't give answers to the magicks and they in the case of the Nightsisters they find themselves superior to everyone strictly because of their magicks. They generally think of males as lower on the totem pole but are open to them rising up if they prove themselves loyal to the coven. Most the time though, men are seen as more tools of war and breeding than much else. Of course, in Chaos canon, this might have changed a bit but on a strictly EU/Canon sense this would hold true.

A2:

The main thing to remember about Magick is that it is based solely on the "Ichor" or "spiritual energy" found on Dathomir. It is very weak outside of Dathomir and generally to use it, you must use incantations and spells. Unlike the force, it is not a summon at will power with the exception of a few abilities such as Sense of Veshet described in The Book of Sith, yet it is still implied that there are some voodoo-like steps to take to obtain such power.

Anyway, the Magicks are powerful on Dathomir and get weaker the further and longer you are away from it. Now, in the context of my recent faction, we would aim to remedy that by tearing rips in the Nether to allow more Ichor to flow through (more on Ichor later). To sum it up, you can do almost anything you want with Magicks but just realize it has downfalls. Read the wiki page to get an idea.

A3:

Yes and no. It is heavily implied that The Dathomiri magics use The Living Force to use their powers, they just tapped into it in a vastly different manner than Jedi and Sith. In fact most Jedi and Sith powers don't use The Living Force, it uses The Cosmic Force. Instead of calling on the energy field that binds all matter together, The Witches call upon the energy of living things. AKA the Spirit which is the basis for their Spirit Ichor that they use in Magicks. This means that Dathomiri Magicks involve things such as blood sacrifice, grinding roots, mixing brews, etc. They use nature to access their powers and because of that they have access to a wide set of powers that are closed off from other branches of Force Use.

Dathomiri Magick is both linked and disconnected from the standard idea of The Force in that way.

A4:

"The Force is Limitless but you are not" still applies to this part of the force as well. One Witch can only do so much without mass rituals like the one I am conducting or vast amounts of resources. That being said, you could completely go off the beaten path and create your own abilities as long as you are reasonable about them! Just like any other force power on the site!

Hopefully, that helps! Feel free to ask if you need more answers and perhaps somebody else can clear anything up I missed or did not make clear enough!

OKay I kinda get it, its almost like fantasy magick, certain requirements have to be met in order to use a spell such as a reciting words, or sacrificing or things within that nature?

Edit: And the closer you are to the source of the magick, the more stronger and potent the spell maybe?

Pretty much, yes and the closer you are to a strong source of free-flowing Ichor the more powerful your spells will be.

Another important thing to note is that it is possible, through the use of Dathomiri magick, to make a non-force user a force user such was the case of Mother Talzin from The Clone Wars.

Mother Talzin was also a very powerful Witch and therefore could use extremely potent magick outside of Dathomir.

The trade-off is that Dathomiri Magic takes very little of one's owns Force Energy to use in comparison to standard force users and you can get more powerful and varying results. However, you generally need to take more steps to activate your powers than any Jedi or Sith would need to activate their powers. You don't see Jedi having to dance with a voodoo doll to force push someone, but you also don't see Jedi raising armies of the dead or teleporting.

Don't worry too much about the 'less powerful off Dathomir' thing. I've never seen a solid source say that, and plenty of witches wrecked face while living off Dathomir for years - Kirana Ti, Ventress, Kyrisa, etc. Dark Disciple makes it very clear that it's all the Force, and that the only difficulty to witching it up off Dathomir is the unavailability of certain physical resources.

Really all you have to remember is three things: it's all matriarchal or exists in the context of matriarchy; all Star Wars magic is just the Force; and all Dathomiri magic involves some kind of somatic component (chant, song, complex gestures, dance).

Though I'd like to point out that all those examples, spare Kyrissa slightly, we're trained in and using either Sith Force powers or Jedi Force Powers which have been acknowledged as being very different than Dathomiri magic.

The magick itself is weaker off world, not the person who could still use powers of the force not connected with their magic.

It's also important to remember that there are more arcane users of the force than just the witches of Dathomir, they are just the most famous of the lot. The rest are far more obscure, and thus you have much more license to creativity with it (such as Ewok Shamanism, Shapers of Kro Var, and so on).
