Work It Out (Open to SSC)

Valae sat on the edge of her bed, feet dangling off the side, and thought about the day ahead of her. She did not have any lessons, and the free time was full of opportunity for practice. She only needed to figure out how she was going to spend her day, this was the hard part. Valae had a mental checklist of things that she needed to do:

1. Make friends – She’d touched on this one, but felt that there was still work to be done.
2. Get in shape – There had been a bit of slow progress on this front.
3. Learn to self-defense – This had not been attempted.
4. Learn how to swim – NOPE. Never mind.

Of the items she could think of, she figured that she would do well to spend some time on the training grounds. She could do some work practicing basic punching, kicking and dodging. After a quick glance out the window she dressed in a light cotton training outfit, as it looked the weather was looking quite sunny and bright. Quick steps brought her out into the open air, and she took in a deep breath... it was a very refreshing way to start her day.

Valae’s steps grew a bit hesitant as she neared one of the punching bags; her boots took smaller steps as she grew closer. She could do this! She’d even slapped a man once when she worked at the cantina, punching couldn’t be that much harder, right? Valae assumed a stance; her left fist slightly forward and her right was cocked and ready. She swung her fist; the motion came strictly from the shoulder, resulting in a rather pathetic display. Despite the fact that there wasn’t an abundance of power behind her move, she let out a slight yelp.

“Ouch...” She muttered, stepping back and rubbing her knuckles. The punching bag was not as plush as it looked. Valae went a bit red, and hoped that no one had been watching.

The young Anzat was munching on a thin mint cookie.

Arms loaded with various articles, the boy was making his way from the archives toward the quarters he'd re-purposed into a makeshift office. The boy had been intent on writing a holobook review on a recent academic publication addressing the so-called Clockwork Rebellion. In preparation for which, the boy had withdrawn a holocron containing the Jedi Medical Corps' surviving notes on the Gulag Virus, the available texts on the artificial intelligence known as Omni, a partial star chart of the period and the only political history of the organization known as the Galactic Alliance of the post-Imperial Era that he could find.

And a box of Gran Scout cookies. Specifically thin mints.

Because science!

Taking a short cut through the mountain temple, the young Jedi was passing through the area used as a gymnasium. Not by Sor-Jan, but he'd heard talk of Jedi going to the gym. He'd be skeptical that any of them were Consulars, and could probably do a statistical analysis to prove or dis-prove the common myth that Guardians were gym rats and Consulars were bookworms. It might make for an interesting paper to present to the next conclave of Jedi Researchers as a topic for an icebreaker as a matter of fact...

Just as he was starting to debate the question of whether he was skilled enough to juggle everything in his arms whilst also plucking another cookie free of its container, a yelp caught his ears. Even without meaning to, the empathic youngling caught the flash of pain and ensuing frustration and embarrassment even without intending such. The telepathic impressions drawing his attention directly to the source, so that as the boy's head perked up he found himself looking over at the girl as though already aware she was there.

"Hullo," the young vampire offered, turning his body to face toward the young woman. He thought he'd seen her around the temple before, but he couldn't be certain. That was often a problem when your head was in a holobook all the time. Sor-Jan recognized most people by their feet, since that's typically what he saw as he passed people in the halls. "Are you quite all right?" the child inquired politely.

Another research topic: Incidents and prevalence of injuries among Jedi who go to the gym.

Yet another reason to keep calm and eat a cookie instead.

...SCIENCE!

Rubbing at his eyes Nikias sat back in his seat, ever since he had woken up earlier he'd spent his time in the temples library. There were only a few places Nikias frequented in the temple, and the library was one of the ones he loved the most. Coming from a planet that for the most part rarely came into contact with the rest of the galaxy left Nikias without alot of knowledge about other species and planets that he'd never been to before. On the terminal there were at least five tabs open, one of which being about a planet called Wayland and the others all revolving around the creatures that inhabited the planet. IT seemed as though Wayland had always had a dark and grim history from what Nikias had been reading, but the sheer amount of information on it was enough to make the young man rub at his temples due to how much he had absorbed. It was a planet he'd soon have to pay a visit to time permitting.

Needing to release the tension in his body and at least relax his mind a bit Nikias instead stood and began making his way to his second favorite place of the temple. The Gym! He didn't have to stop off to change his clothes as the man usually forgone a shirt and hadn't taken to wearing the robes provided to him yet. They felt to itchy, and for the most part uncomfortable for him. Spotting a young boy at the door to the gym Nikias politely nodded "Excuse me." He said. Maybe if Nikias had been skilled in the art of sensing force presences he would've noticed that the boy was no mere child.

Stepping into the gym Nikias caught sight of a padawan he had been familiar with. One that he'd spent time with apart of a group of padawans. Though seeing Valae hold her knuckles and then looking at the punching bag it didn't take a genius to figure out what happened. "Good morning. if you need some help let me know." Nikias said Not wanting to offend the women by offering to much assistance Nikias waved at her before moving his way to the weight sets in the corner of the gym. He had no talent with boosting his physical prowess like other jedi so he had to make up for it by training and honing his own body.

Valae had been too concerned with her bruised fingers to notice that another presence had entered the gym. As she heard a small voice to her side, she turned and a smile found her face. The young man was familiar; she had the feeling that she’d seen him shuffling about the temple with his face hidden by a holobook.

“Hi there,” Valae said with a nod. “Oh, yeah... I’m fine.” She responded sheepishly.

Her eyes took in the array of articles the boy was carrying, and her gaze lingered on his box of cookies. Valae would much rather be sitting on a sunny bench with a bag of snacks... and cookies were among her favorite kind. The mere sight of the bright colored box was enough to make her mouth water... and she finally tore her eyes away and focused on the punching bag again.

“I’ve seen you around before, right?” She resisted the urge to ask the boy for some of his thin mints. “I’m Valae! What’s your name?”

Before she set back to work, she caught sight of a tall figure entering the gym. It was a familiar face, and she smiled a greeting to Nikias. She appreciated his offer of help, and figured that she should probably take the opportunity for some assistance...

“Good morning, Nikias.” She waved at him as he passed by. “Thanks! I’ll take you up on that in a few.”

Valae peeked around the punching bag and watched as Nikias went straight for the weights. She had only meant to watch him for a moment, but her eyes lingered on his muscly physique as he began his workout. It was then that she realized that the boy was still beside her, and she looked away hastily... her cheeks going a bit scarlet.

Embarrassment. Surprise.

...a beach?

Thoughts had wings. Fickle, fluttering things. The errant impulses of the mind projecting even when one was not consciously aware of them. The mind betrayed the person in any number of ways. It was a certain posture, a body language, non-verbal cues that said more than words to those who could read them. Telepathy worked much like that. He was not reading her mind, yet snippets of emotion gave him insight into a fleeting through that was likely come and gone through her mind without her even dwelling upon it more than as a whim.

"I'm SJ," the youngling supplied casually, glancing first up to the young woman and then glancing back over his shoulder as the shadow of a man passed over the boy's head.

Curiosity.

...not toward either of them. Hardly that, actually. The presence behind him seemed to dismiss the youngling out of sight, which was not an uncommon reaction toward a youngling, and merely sparked mere recognition toward the young woman. And, perhaps something guarded. Like, not asking a question for fear of offending someone.

Turning slightly, the boy shifted as though depositing the articles in his hands on a table or shelf that was not there. Rather than fall to the floor however, they rested there in mid-air as though really existing now on some hard surface that was non-existent. Passing the box of cookies over to Valae -- she'd asked him for a cookie, hadn't she? -- the youngling took a step toward the punching bag. "Have you studied shields at all?" the small Anzat inquired, as he made a fist and then gestured in an arc about it as he spoke. "You can reinforce your physical action." Pointing his fist toward the bag, the boy straightened his arm with a single thrust.

The bag popped back as though struck by a Wookiee.

Flattening out his palm, the youngling stopped the bag as it swung back toward him and craned his head back to look up at the girl. Holding up his hand, he revealed no bruises or scratches to the skin.

It was then he realized that she was looking at Niklas. And then, realizing that he'd realized it, looked away blushing. For his part, the boy's head went back with the typical youngling reaction. "Eww..."

Yes, very wise and mature Jedi Knight he was.

"Uh..." the boy said, catching himself and trying to recover. He was at the Jedi Temple. Try and act like a Jedi, SJ. "That is, perhaps Niklas could assist you better," the youngling amended, as his books and holos continued to hover in the air -- seemingly without his even being conscious of them.

There were some sounds going on as the padawan walked down the hallway. With everything happening he had to admit there was some fun on things as he walked down into the room. Seeing one of the knights he knew mostly because.... he had to be able to tell his dad wha some of the people looked like so he would t least not look like he ignores most everyone. The black shirt was also new after finding the gear his master Rasu had set out for him when she wanted him to be ready for their mission... he just had to wait for her to be alright and ready entering as he stepped towards the punching bag. "Well hello new people." The male he didn't know but his senses were there and flaring a little with his nostrils running a hand through his bleached hair offering a smile. "Master Xantha it is nice to see you again."

Nikias had been about to hop directly into his work out upon loading up the bar with over three hundred pounds. To train one’s body is to also train their mind, though Nikias was more than a bit curious about what the young boy and Valae. All it took to get the young man interested was the mere mention of a force ability. Something he had yet to delve into himself as he’d yet to find a true talent in anything. He couldn’t truly sense the force like other jedi, he couldn’t enhance his body, nor was he even able to successfully meditate. Nikias often felt out of place among the silver sanctum and as more and more around him succeeded the doubt had begun to sink in deeper.

Thankfully due to his peoples’ immunity to mind probing and manipulation Nikias need not worry about others finding out about his insecurities. Things that were not fitting of a prince. Sitting up and watching the young boy Nikias didn’t even notice valae staring at his body and by the time he looked over to her, she had turned her head away. Raising an eyebrow in question and looked at sj. “Actually while I can teach her how to throw a real punch, I think you may be the much better teacher. I for one haven’t really learned how to control the force in such a way either.” Nikias said.

Then he realized something, all the things that sj had been holding when he entered the gym were now hovering in the air. Staring in awe at the young boys’ talent Nikias felt somewhat jealous and rose from the weight bench to examine the holo’s and books closer. “to be so young you are quite talented aren’t you?” Nikias asked though not in the tone one would talk to a child in. sj had shown he outclassed Nikias in the force quite heavily. about to ask more questions of sj, nikias heard the greetings of another. "it is a pleasure to meet you as well." Nikias said before being caught off guard by the greeting that sj had been given.

"master?" nikias choked in surprise and looking back at sj. "you're far more impressive than I thought. I apologize master xantha."

It was very clear that SJ was far more skilled than she was, especially when it came to matters of telekinesis. Valae had just mastered being able to call simple items to her hand, but nothing more advanced than that. It was very impressive to see a youngling with such power and control. She was still a bit embarrassed that he’d caught her staring at Nikias, but she shrugged it off and looked back towards the boy.

“Maybe you can both help me.” She said grinning, and noticed that SJ’s feat had brought Nikias over to them.
She had been practicing with shields, but had not made a lot of progress so far. Valae had been getting better about drawing the force to her, but her attempts at shields had been fairly weak. This would be a good time to gain some more experience, and save her knuckles from being bruised too... that was always a plus.

“I’ll give it another try.” She raised her fists again, her stance was probably not correct... as she was attempting to emulate those she’d seen practicing, but had little actual experience herself. Valae began to concentrate and draw the force to her fists, but that moment of focus was broken a moment later.

Her dark eyes were drawn in the direction of a new voice, and she turned to see a man with blonde hair had approached. She watched with curiosity as he greeted SJ, and offered the newcomer a nod.

“Hello there.” She smiled. “It must be a good day to work out.” Valae laughed softly.

The small boy's head came up as a third presence presented itself.

Familiarity.

...no, recognition. Even before the raven haired youngling's sapphire eyes had risen to gaze upon the chiseled features or bleached hair of the young man, the Anzat's mind had already made the connection. "Hi, Barinthus!" the boy offered brightly.

Did everybody know each other? The impression that the little empath seemed to get from the room was that the answer to that question was most likely not. "Barinthus, this is Valae," the young vampire offered, gesturing toward the young woman standing over him. Motioning next to the other young man, the boy added, "...and that's Nikias."

For the sake of the other two, the boy remarked, "Barinthus is Master Gan's padawan." Which, if Barinthus was here, then was [member="Rasu Gan"] perhaps nearby? Seemingly eager or hopeful such might be the case, the boy seemed to try and peer around Barinthus' form as though expecting to see a green skinned, regal Jedi striding in behind him...

"You're far more impressive than I thought. I apologize Master Xantha."

Huh? The quizzical expression on the small Anzat's face seemed to fully illustrate his boyish features as he looked, confused, up at the Hellyni padawan. "For what?" the youngling inquired, as though honestly bewildered that there would be anything to apologize for. Then, with a somewhat enigmatic smile, the boy remarked, "You'll find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view."

Was that the voice of Master Tyvokka? Or Count Dooku... at least, the Jedi Knight who had been Yoda's former padawan before the dark times. Before the death of Qui-Gon Jinn and the beginning of the end for the Old Republic. As though to illustrate his point, the child offered, "Childhood for my species can last for a hundred years, and I am only sixty-four." Sixty-four and a half, to be exact. Or, was it sixty-four and a quarter? Traveling forward in time eight hundred years, particularly when the galactic standard calendar had changed in the intervening years, made it hell to try and keep track of birthdays. "To some, a lifetime. To others, merely the blink of an eye. In any event of which, if you assumed me to be a child, then you are correct... from a certain point of view."

Turning back toward Barinthus, the boy changed the subject back to the earlier topic. "I was just talking to them about Force shields, if you'd like to join us."

Was this a training session now? He supposed so. Which, was probably for the best. Learning about the Force was a thousand, million times better than going to the gym.

....even if they were technically in a gym for learning about the Force. Learning happened anywhere. Because SCIENCE!

"Yes, I think that would be a great idea." Nikias said to Valae. Looking over to SJ to be sure that the Jedi Master was fine with it Nikias moved over to Valae's side to offer his assistance in helping her take up the right stance for her jab all while listening to the cryptic line that SJ had offered. Nodding his head Nikias thought about what the Jedi Master had said. In many ways it was a simple phrase to memorize and digest but it had plenty of meaning behind it. Nikias himself could think of several instances in his own life where what SJ had said proved true. The number one being how his people saw the City-state of Attika and their domination of the planet Hora as them being greedy and corrupt. While they probably saw themselves as being just in their actions. Though could the same be said for the jedi and some of the Sith? Nikias wondered looking over at SJ It was a lot to think about, and something Nikias would look into deeper when he had the time.

Shaking the thoughts from his head Nikias looked at Valae's stance and shook his head. "No this isn't right at all. If you don't mind." Nikias said and he'd lightly place a hand on Vale's wrists guiding her hands up to the side of her face. "Now stagger your footing and bend your knees slightly." Nikias said looking to ensure that Valae was doing as instructed. "Face forward and chin down. Like this." Taking up a similar stance to as he described Nikias. "Now when you throw the first jab push off your back foot and snap out with the jab." Demonstrating the jab Nikias' arm lashed out hitting the bag causing it to rock, but before it came back he lashed out with three more jabs pushing it back further before it swung forward into his arms. "Now I think this is where SJ adds in the part about the shields."

He was looking at the one knight as the boy though given how he was much like his father and aged at best slowly. Same as he and his sister, he was looking behind the padawan and well he was guessing to wonder if Allana or Rasu was there. The two of them usually there when he was around here in the temples. Otherwise why leave the jungle or the catacombs where they could train with him nodding. "Force shields are something good to learn and I know master Gan wnted me to get some teachings outside of my father's and her training sessions." He stood there ready to begin and slid the coat off sending it to the side of the room while looking at the two. "Nikias, Valae... I don't think I hve met you before but welcome and hope you are having fun."

“It’s nice to meet you, Barinthus.” Valae said in a friendly tone after SJ introduced everyone. She smiled when the blonde padawan decided to join their little impromptu training session. It was more fun to train with others than trying to struggle along alone. Her attention turned towards SJ as he addressed Nikias’ comment, and her eyes grew slightly wider when he revealed his true age. It was truly amazing childhood in SJ’s species could equal a whole lifespan for others.

Valae slipped back into her stance, and turned her head at the sound of Nikias’ voice. She let him guide her wrists to the proper alignment and she looked down briefly as she stepped her left foot forward. With knees bent slightly, she bounced in place a couple of times, already feeling the difference in her stance. Next she angled her chin towards the floor like Nikias demonstrated, and she shadowed his movements slowly to make sure she had the motions down.

“I think I’ve got it now!” She said with a wide grin.

Valae’s right fist snapped forward and she pivoted slightly, using her back foot to help generate more power behind the blow. Her fist made contact with the bag only slightly, as she didn’t want to go hurting her hand again before they learned how to use the shields. The padawan stood up straight again, turning to watch Sj again. This time she would make sure to pay attention closely. Though the boy’s looks may have been deceiving, it was clear that they could all learn much from him.

Nikias came in to address the physical form, leaving the young Anzat to deal with the more theoretical aspects of the lesson.

Form was important, no doubt. But Sor-Jan was a Niman practitioner. Analysis, assessment, and then adaptation was more his mindset, including when in a physical altercation. Part of which was, making the chit up as you went along and just seeing what worked and what didn't. "You already know the basics of telekinesis," the boy remarked, highlighting the most overlooked aspect of Jedi training.

If you mastered the basics, you mastered the Force.

"You extend the Force outward with a Featherpush," the boy said, elaborating with two of the most simple examples of telekinesis demonstrated by novice Jedi, usually manifesting while still untrained. Stretching out with one arm, the boy sent a ripple outward from his hand, then seemed to reel it back toward himself as he added, "Or use it to pull something toward you."

The young Jedi cycled through the motion one more time. Extending out. Pulling in. "Think about what you're doing when you do those things, or how you're using thought to re-shape the way the Force flows around you," the boy advised, before he paused with his arm held flat. This time the ripple that radiated from out of his form spread out rather than travel forward. It was like there was an intangible object floating there in front of his outstretched palm. "You can create a barrier the same way, by imagining the shield in your mind and stretching out with the Force to make it a reality."

The small Force shield vanished, as the boy drew his arms in and then extended them out in either direction. As he did, the group may have been aware that they were now encircled by an energy field that was manifesting around them like a bubble. "The barrier might be very large," the youth said, before collapsing the Force barrier and then making a fist. An arc of energy seemed to light at the end of his arm, like a pair of Force knuckles. "...or small enough to fit around your hand."

"No we haven't had the pleasure of meeting. Always good to meet another jedi." Nikias said to Barinthus offering a nod of his head in greeting while he moved away from Valae and the punching bag to give her room to get used to the form and practice. It was the best thing for her and he wanted to be sure that he didn't get hit accidently. From first appearances and the looks of how quickly Valae picked up on the form and what to do Nikias didn't really need to worry about showing her more till she wanted to learn other types of punches, dodges and such. With them being jedi it begged the question of just how often they would end up in hand to hand combat considering their sabers. Nikias himself had a tendency of blending in physical strikes in with his saber combat but he'd never been in a fight that completely degenerated to one's skill in hand to hand. However, it was still a good thing to know just in case.

Leaving the rest of the lesson to SJ, Nikias turned to look at the jedi master a glint in his eyes at what knowledge he'd be able to learn. So far he hadn't been able to truly gain any knowledge that would aid him. That was all about to change. So as a translucent barrier appeared around all of them Nikias moved touching it and feeling the smooth surface as he examined it and just how sturdy it was. Tapping on it Nikias continued to pay attention to SJ as he explained the process for creating the shield and controlling it. Just as fast as the shield had been raised it vanished and turning around Nikias saw the energy along SJ's fist. The fact that he had phrased everything as if it was so simple perplexed Nikias. He had been expecting for a long drawn out description of steps. The fact there wasn't any was fine with him though. The best practice came from experiencing and not simply observing. Though he'd wait to see if the others tried to imitate SJ's feat first.

The others were getting into a position and he could follow suit while letting the jedi master explain it all. The barriers he had learned about from Rasu and Sochi when he was little. A small thing when it came to his family and their friends. Taking a position with his hands clenched and ready for the lesson as he brought his hand up and was focusing on it. Feeling the force energies excite the blood in his body with a nod of his head in understanding. He was letting the force expand from his arm and hand to make the small barrier over the skin that glowed purplish with small swirls for the moment until he relaxed allowing it to tingle the small hairs on his arm. FOrce energies expanding outwards to cover the rest of his arm.

Valae listened closely to SJ’s explanation, and liked the way he said to “re-shape” the force... it was a nice way to think about it. She had always struggled with bending the force to her will; Valae was often prone to overthinking and then suffering from the subsequent fear of failure.

Her gaze traveled side to side as she felt the energy field that SJ had surrounded them with. She let her fingertips stretch out to feel the barrier of his shield, and a moment later their protective bubble had been reduced to the size of SJ’s fist. It would be interesting to try.

The padawan’s attention shifted to Barinthus, and she watched with interest as he made his attempt. She could feel the energy surrounding his arm, and knew that he had been successful. Valae held her hands out in front of her with palms facing, slowly she drew the force to her and began to concentrate on creating tiny wall of energy between her hands. The force filled the space between her palms, and began to thin out slightly.

A smile lit up on Valae’s face as she stretched the small barrier between her hands for a moment before letting the energy disperse. Next she raised her fists up like Nikias had demonstrated and she concentrated on creating a small and smooth barrier around them. It didn’t come as easily as the first time, as her excitement had thrown off her focus just slightly. As she struck out at the punching bag, it was difficult to maintain her concentration... also now concentrating on her form, but she made contact and grinned.

“Whoa.”

It didn’t hurt at all.

Barinthus' demonstration was something that the Anzat had more or less expected, being the student of [member="Rasu Gan"].

He could take some measure of joy in seeing Valae give it a try. One of the first lessons his master had imparted to him was that if one was not willing to fail, they could never succeed. "You see, you can do it," the boy offered warmly, congratulating the padawan in taking the first, awkward steps into exploring new realities she might otherwise not have considered.

And it was always awkward at first, learning something new. Especially when one had to apply it. Force only knew how many times he'd dropped a lightsaber when first practicing Jar'kai. As the other two padawans demonstrated the feat that the boy had spoken of, the Anzat's gaze turned up to the one who hadn't yet stepped forward.

As he waited for Nikias' to give it a try, the boy continued with a piece of advice. "There is a Jedi Temple on Lothal which contains ancient artifacts known as the Muntuur Stones," the youngling remarked. He was a professor of history, so of course he would talk about the traditions that made the Jedi what they were. "For more than a thousand generations, Jedi have used the Muntuur Stones to hone and refine their telekinetic abilities."

Seven in all. Sor-Jan could manage four. Yoda could manage six. Rare was the Jedi who could master all seven. "You should go there at some point in your training. Spend some time reflecting on how the Force shapes the mind of the Jedi, but also how your mind can shape the Force."

Sitting down quite a ways away from most of the oither people, Sakon closed his eyes and began to meditate. He was attempting to find a balance within him and his soul though that was much more easier said then done and everybody knew that. It mattered little to him though, his goal was to reach a jedi master wail still keeping hold of his own morals instead of abandoning them as most of the jedi had done over the years, over the decades infact. With his eyes closed his mind slowly drifted out and around the place in his mind, strengthining his bond with the force ever greater then before. His light sabers spun around him slowly as he meditated and began trying to use a foresight that he had heard of many jedi using in th epast

Nikias was shocked at just how fast the other two had used the abilities and with such ease. He could see the energy swirling around their hands and arms, and he had to admit it was pretty impressive. Turning to look back at the Master, Nikias found himself looking at SJ and new that he'd be expected to replicate the same feat. Biting his bottom lip Nikias tried to think of an excuse for why he couldn't do it, though knew that such a thing wouldn't slide with a Master even if his mind was secure. With a final sigh Nikias gave in and prepared himself to try and create a barrier in the same way as the other padawans. Nikias himself had never demonstrated any ability outside of the telekinetic aspects of the force so as he drew the force in to himself Nikias took a deep breath.

Pushing out with the force Nikias expanded out his hand using his telekinesis to push out and in his mind he focused on building the energy up around himself where it created a small bubble around him. Near invisible none would probably be able to see it, but they'd certainly be able to feel it. Looking around at the protective bubble Nikias focused on it shrinking it smaller and smaller till it was close enough to his skin that it acted as a thin shield around his hand. Looking first at the back on his hand Nikias noticed he couldn't see the energy but he could feel it. Finally letting it drop he wondered if the others in the room had noticed it or even thought he did anything. "I'll be sure to visit the location when I find the time to do so. Thank you for the lessons Master Xantha," Nikias said with a bow to the anzati.
