DESCRIPTION
The entire purpose of the XY drug is to alter the participant into the opposite gender of their species. This is a slow process, and an often uncomfortable one according to those who have undergone the procedure; though it is relatively harmless considering the result. Most users are satisfied with the result, and some even take it on a schedule to maintain their gender reassignment.
That is to say, while a marvel of our time, the drug is strictly meant for near-human species due to the similarities in their genetic structure and the limitations of the augmented viruses utilized in its use. To work, the drug utilizes full strength ‘Megaviruses’ to hijack the body's cells and inject a new genetic sequence only after it correctly modifies the current standing genome. After testing on a small scale, the megavirus then multiplies this correct structure amongst the rest of the body, inciting only a mild response from the immune system for some time before the effects are finalized. Despite the relatively advanced genetic replication process, as the body picks up on what the structure is doing, it will undo the effects and revert the body back to the original gender, displaying only the proper traits originally meant.
That is to say, this does not affect the mind due to the blood-brain barrier, and is strictly set to bone structures, hormones levels, and actively expressed sexual organs.
To compensate for the immune system, the virus ensures that each ‘version’ of the augmentation is compatible with the system before spreading, utilizing its enzymes to quickly spread faster than an proper bodily response can be made. Most transitions can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours before being complete; making it a great drug for even a single night of entertainment.
The response of the body however, and its revert to its original gender is entirely dependent on the strength of the immune system. Most drug uses cause a change to last only a few hours, up to a day for most, while those who choose to take the drug actively can see themselves perpetually changed. Most who do so are advised to take an immune system softening drug, or genetic alterations to strictly force their body to not recognize the changes as a threat; though this is the relatively cheaper option to full genetic therapy so many do it regardless.
More often, this drug has seen a rather active market amongst nightclubs across the galaxy; letting people live a one night fantasy before slipping back into their usual shoes and continuing their life with nobody being the wiser as to what had happened. While used recreational on the black market, it is too used by many undercover agents for infiltration use as it does change the look of the person enough to be unrecognizable by most;
Afterall, who really notices a female version of their enemy?
Suffice to say, while the drug can be used actively over the short term, there is nothing stopping someone from using it in the long term besides a few glaring drawbacks of infertility in a certain amount of census tests, and a lack of effect on any non near human source.
