OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
[*]Disra District: The Disra District holds an even mix of middle and lower-class residences. A great deal of electronics manufacturing for Yaga Minor’s shipbuilding industry takes place here. Factories and warehouses are prominent. Most of the city’s Yagai live in this district. Crime is high.
[*]Balfour District: Holding the famous Yavvitiri Spaceport, the Balfour District is the most attractive in the whole city. It serves as the hub for the city’s financial and commercial activities. Office buildings and shopping centers are the most commonplace fixtures. The residential sections here are mostly middle-class, but there are a few higher-class neighborhoods as well. Crime is low.
[*]Gromia District: The Gromia District is another manufacturing area in Yavvitiri, although nowhere near as pleasant as the Disra District. All of the residences here are lower-class. Like the Disra District, factories and warehouses dominate. Many Yagai live in this district as well, though not nearly as much as in Disra. Crime is moderate.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Yavvitiri as a city did not reach prominence until the Inter-Sith Wars period of 3950 to 2000 BBY. At the time it was known as the Yavvitiri Hive and, like the others, strived among themselves for dominance on the planet. The Yagai are a naturally aggressive and fiercely territorial species, so wars among Hives were rather commonplace. There was no unity among the lot of them. That is, until their planet became an unwitting pawn in a larger game.
Jedi ambassadors visited Yavvitiri under the pretense of learning about Yagai culture and technical prowess. In reality, they were bait for a Sith Lord named Darth Desolous. Desolous’ forces attacked the planet, expecting to find a large amount of Jedi. Instead there were only the few ambassadors in the Yavvitiri Hive, though he did not care anyway. Desolous’ forces attacked, overwhelmed Yavvitiri’s defenses, and proceeded to occupy the Hive.
And then the real Jedi army, a large flotilla, emerged from hyperspace, destroyed Desolous’ fleet, and blockaded the world. Trapped in Yavvitiri, the Jedi surrounded and destroyed both the savage Darth and his army. The Yavvitiri Hive was decimated in the fighting and did not look likely to survive. The surviving members of the Hive scattered to the winds, leaving only ruins behind. The Jedi offered to stay and help rebuild, but the enraged Yagai refused.
In the wake of the Jedi’s trap, there was a sudden surge in pan-Yagai nationalism. They came to realize that the days of petty warfare among hives was over. There was a whole galaxy out there just ready to take advantage of them. Most of the larger Yagai Hives signed a unification treaty. The rest were left to their own devices or, in the event that they became an obstacle to the signatories’ galactic ambitions, destroyed and taken over.
The industriously minded Yagai prospered once they entered the galactic stage. Yaga Minor became home to a booming shipbuilding industry. Investment from Muunilinist eventually saw the development of the Yaga Minor Shipyards, the most famous (if not the most productive) in the entire region. The Yagai eventually found themselves forced to join the Republic. Their planet also became home to a wave of mostly human immigrants, most of which were attracted by prospects of employment in the shipyards.
It was at this point that Yavvitiri was refounded and resettled, the ruins cleared away for a bustling, cosmopolitan city. One that was still ruled by the Yagai-dominated planetary government, of course.
Despite their mostly begrudging attitude towards the Republic and the Jedi, Yaga Minor was chosen to serve as the launch point for the Outbound Flight. Following the expedition’s failure, many in the Republic blamed the already agitated Yagai, accusing them of sabotage. Jedi were sent to soothe tensions, but it was to no avail. Like many other planets in the Pentastar Alignment, Yaga Minor declared itself for the Confederacy of Independent Systems when the Clone Wars broke out.
Boy, did they come to regret that.
Many warships exited Yaga Minor’s shipyards in service of the Separatist cause, paid for by the Banking Clan. Much of this money found its way into the still-growing city of Yavvitiri, which manufactured much of the electronics and general equipment found on those vessels. Yavvitiri prospered during this period, but it was not to last.
The IGBC lost the siege of Muunilinst with their defeat at Harnaidan in 21 BBY. Now they were not only no longer being paid, they were at risk of having their shipyards destroyed by a vengeful Republic. Rather than fight on, the Yagai elected to surrender unconditionally to the Republic and allow themselves to be occupied peacefully. There was no protracted siege or widespread destruction.
But boy, did they come to regret that anyway.
Not long after that, Yaga Minor found itself the subject of the newly formed Galactic Empire. Despite the horrors inflicted by the Imperials elsewhere, the Yagai decided to cope with their subjugation the best way they knew how: making themselves useful. Thanks to their great technical knowledge as it pertained to shipbuilding, the Empire decided not to exterminate them like they had the equally industrious and pro-Confederacy Geonosians. A different fate was in store for them; something a few people would consider more humiliating by far.
Waves upon waves of human colonists made their way to Yaga Minor as part of a “de-alienification” program. Like many other native species in the Pentastar Alignment, the Yagai were made minorities on their own planets in the face of human expansion. Not only that, but many of them were genetically modified to be turned into mindless worker drones. Times were not good.
Yavvitiri would become ground zero for the supplanting of the Yagai. Since it was already a cosmopolitan city thanks to the previous immigration wave, it became the gateway for other colonists arriving on the planet. Yavvitiri’s spaceport grew in size exponentially to accommodate this. By the time the Emperor was killed and the New Republic entered the stage, the Yagai had lost all of their aggression and say in the matters of their world. Second class citizens indeed, and nowhere was this newfound status more prevalent than Yavvitiri.
Things only became more and more humanized from there on out. The planetary government was dissolved in favor of a new one instituted by an Imperial governor. It mandated the creation of central planning organizations (called Commissariats) for each city. It was at this point that the Yavvitiri Central Planning Commissariat was formed, which is discussed in more detail here.
Once human supremacy on Yaga Minor was achieved, not much else was changed. Yaga Minor remained under Imperial control even after the Republic took Coruscant. Though the Imperial Remnant eventually did away with its colonization initiatives and became more accepting of the Yagai, the damage was already done. It was to the point where most people no longer knew that Yaga Minor even had a native species. Yavvitiri became just another human city and has remained that way ever since- all the way through the rise of the first One Sith to now.
In this post-Gulag era, occupation by the Fel Empire, Mandalorians, Mandalorian Crusaders, and so forth have done little to change things. Many of the cities are still ruled by Central Planning Commissariats which are in turn controlled by a ruling planetary council. A remnant of ancient Imperial occupation. It is this emphasis on order and production instilled by the ruling city government the Yavvitiri Central Planning Commissariat, that has allowed Yavvitiri to continue to meet the manufacturing needs of Yaga Minor’s orbital shipyards.
Nowadays, a different sort of evil sinks its teeth into Yavvitiri. The same one that meddles in the affairs of Civola, and one that promises to remain even after the current Sith Empire occupation ends.
- Intent: To flesh out another city as the personal stomping grounds of the Helix Syndicate.
- Image: Icon edited from here, background from here.
- Canon: Quasi (see links)
- Links: Preparation Center, Yavvitiri Spaceport
- City Name: Yavvitiri
- Classification: Metropolis (Population of 4.3 Million)
- Location: Yaga Minor (Located on a Peninsula, plus several rivers often make up natural boundaries between districts)
- Affiliation: Yaga Minor Planetary Government / Yavvitiri City Government (Yavvitiri Central Planning Commissariat, de jure)
- Demographics: 79% Human, 10% Near-Human, 8% Yaga, 3% Other
- Wealth: High. Yavvitiri is home to Yaga Minor’s primary spaceport and is a major hub for off-world and interplanetary trade. As a major shipbuilding world, Yaga Minor has historically benefited from its close proximity to Muunilinist and Entralla. Most of Yavvitiri’s wealth comes from trade, while a small but robust electronics manufacturing sector supplies needed materials for the shipyards in orbit.
- Stability: Medium, approaching High. A re-shuffling of the Yavvitiri Central Planning Commissariat’s chief staff as well as a secret alliance brokered with the Helix Syndicate is slowly suffocating some of the more violent and prolific organized crime outfits. Still, there’s an element of unrest from the natives.
- Description: Yavvitiri is not the largest city on Yaga Minor by any means, but it does rank somewhere towards the end of the planet’s top ten wealthiest. It clawed its way to prominence ruthlessly: a despotic bureaucratic authority does everything it can to streamline commerce and eradicate crime, often at the cost of starving the city culturally and ignoring tensions between species.
- Tavira District: In addition to middle-class residences, the Tavira District holds the majority of the entertainment aspects of the city. This district is a mishmosh of an assortment of entertainment venues, some of a higher class than others. A Helix Syndicate Resort Casino can be found here. Crime is low.
- Veed District: Higher-class residences dominated the Veed District. Most of the city’s administrative functions take place here. General office buildings belonging to private entities are another common feature. A Helix Syndicate Collections Center can be found here. Crime is nonexistent.
YCPC Headquarters: Essentially the brain of the city, the building that houses the YCPC is built much like the YCPC. No frills, rigid adhereance to function over form. It is a gigantic, featureless square monolith of a building. It is, nonetheless, impeccably maintained.
- Old Yavvitiri: It’s said that this stretch of the Disra District is the original foundations for the pre-human city of Yavvitiri. Human settlers and entrepreneurs were essentially bullied from this part of the district, which is the most densely populated part. It is a sprawling slum for the bitter and nostalgic Yagai. It is considered a no-go zone for Yavvitiri’s law enforcement, and practically anyone else who isn’t a Yagai.
- Centerpoint Park: A modestly sized park is one of the more popular attractions in the Balfour district. A large monument dedicated to the ill-fated Outbound Flight, erected by human settlers, stands prominently in the park.
- Preparation Center: The old training facility for the crew of the Outbound Flight, it remains standing even after all these years and now serves as a museum. It chronicles the history of Yaga Minor, though it certainly seems to paint the pre-Galactic Empire years in an unfairly negative light. It makes no mention of the genetic torture several thousand Yagai went through as part of Imperial experimentation.
- Yavvitiri Spaceport: A colossal spaceport complex that processes seemingly impossible numbers of ships each day. Despite its sheer size, it is well guarded and smugglers tend to have an awful time trying to avoid customs... Unless they know the right people, of course.
