"Stop pushing!"
"I'm not pushing, you're pushing!"
"Nu-uh! Your face is pushing!"
Sabetha rolled her eyes. They were all such children.
"Shhhhhhh everyone!" She said, turning to the other three kids in the alley. It took a minute, but they all pipped down. Not because she was in charge or anything, but because- well, she didn't really know why. She wasn't the oldest, or the biggest. But she usually had the best ideas. And this one was a great one. Really grade A. And they all knew it.
There was an art to pickpocketing. These four kids hadn't survived on the street without learning certain things. The first was that half a second of contact was all you needed. Hang on too long and no matter how stupid someone was, or how good you were, they were gonna notice. The second was that a good distraction was better than being good. Of the lot of them, Sabetha was the best. But she was also the best at creating distractions. So she was going to be the one to pull of this part of it today. If everything went well, while she was creating a distraction, pulling adult attention to herself, Sasha and Peg would take advantage of that. After a thirty seconds (no more!), Roan would come through and 'help' her, promise whatever mark got caught in the net he'd get her back to "their" parents and then as soon as they were around the corner *bam* they'd be rich for a day or two.
Which was really all that street kids could ever look for.
"Okay, ready?"
Everyone nodded.
Sabetha glanced out of the alley. She took a deep breath. Tied to her leg on the right side, beneath her pants was a long stick. It made walking a little bit stiff, but she was hoping in the crowd here in the shopping district, no one would notice. Sidling out of the alley, she slipped through the crowd. She dismissed the first couple of people, focusing in on a group of young folks.
Perfect.
As she got close to them, using the crowd to keep herself hidden until she was only a meter away, she pretended to trip. Sprawling on the ground right in front of them, she bent her knee hard, smacking the leg against the ground, causing the stick to snap with (she was delighted to hear) a realistically sickening CRACK.
"MY LEG!" She wailed.
Now hopefully her friends were doing their part.
