PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Spun-plast Casing: Spun-plast casing makes this device relatively small, comfortable, and resistant to casual weather phenomena the wearer might encounter. Perhaps most importantly, it insulates the user from unintended electric shocks from the rest of the device.
  • Electro-neuro stimulator with removable electrode: As with other similar devices, Ysalamir sends electrical impulses every couple milliseconds into the neurological system that disrupts the ability of telepathetic powers to influence the wearer. The Ysalamir uses an electrode which can be moved to placed over a prominent, near point of the wearer's neurological system can be more easily accessed. This is usually the base of a neck on a humanoid.
  • Self-Fitted: The spun-plast collar chassis can be shaped to the contour of the user simply through daily wear or by the careful application of heat. Most of the Ysalamir's structure itself is simple spun-plast, which can be shaved or cut to the user's preference in order to improve fit.
STRENGTHS
  • Mental Resistance: The Ysalamir provides its users with a base defense against mental attacks which doesn't necessarily require their immediate attention to activate or use.
  • Unobtrusive: Ysalamir is relatively compact and comfortable. Many users feel like wearing it becomes second-nature and almost a part of their 'skin'.
WEAKNESSES
  • Potential Shock: The device emits electrical pulses into the user, and with that, there is always a possibility of the Ysalamir giving the user an annoying or painful shock in certain circumstances, such as if the device is damaged in battle or the user unwisely decides to go for a swim.
  • Adjunct Device (not immunity): Unlike its namesake, the Ysalamir does not provide complete immunity from telepathetic attacks, it simply decreases the length of a connection that a telepathetic force user can connect with the user. This is useful against complicated mind tricks and illusions, but less so against simple and quick mental attacks.
DESCRIPTION

There have been entire movements in the galaxy to get rid of (certain) force-users at various times in galactic history. While the powers of the Force can make someone a mighty hero who can help hundreds if not thousands of people, the same power can also be aimed at hurting a great deal more. Concerned with the might of the Sith Empire, Lucerne Personal Defense began a slow study in technologies that it might produce in order to help protect people from malign uses of the Force. Ironically, they found such a device previous in service with another empire dominated by a Sith Lord. Lucerne Personal Defense made a simple adaptation of that technology, with most of the changes to the design not changing its actual mechanisms of operation, but rather in how the wearer used it. Rather than integrating it into a piece of armor, Lucerne Personal Defense made the device its own separate, wearable piece of tech in order to allow a variety of users to comfortably wear it. It still can be easily integrated into personal armors if need be.

Ysalamir provides limited protection against mental attacks, which unfortunately does not live up to the products much-hyped name. It is significantly more convenient to carry and wear though than a live animal, even if it doesn't provide as much protection. Due to its method of interaction with the user's neuro system, the Ysalamir works best against more complicated mind tricks and illusions that require more precise or longer connection with the opponents. An example of this might be the deleterious effects of battle meditation or Krath illusions. On the other hand, a simple quick mind trick like "these aren't the droids you are looking for" is more likely to succeed, especially if the user isn't wary. Because of this, Ysalamir is best thought of as adjunctive device to resisting mental trickery rather than as the end-all solution.

Ysalamir, being relatively simple and cheap to manufacture, was quickly put into production after a series of limited tests with friendly force users. Despite its modest effectiveness, the device has not proven to be exceptionally popular, largely because of the current rarity of having to deal with hostile force users who prefers using telepathetic Force techniques. Still, the Ysalamir has enjoyed small and steady sales to a handful of trusted buyers who are engaged in hunting down darksiders in friendly territory as well as the crews of naval vessels expecting to face battle meditation users against them. Directorate officers and the crews of their more elite vessels are probably among the most prolific users of the device. Rumors have it that some of these devices are being incorporated in experimental power armors.
