“Zai Avery was born on Rishi, in a salvager’s sanctuary. His parents, Jan and Tag Avery, were respected elders in the sanctuary and the young Avery would accompany them off-planet to (illegally) salvage wrecks. At the age of fourteen, Avery witnessed slavers attacking the sanctuary, slaughtering most of the salvagers, including Jan and Tag. Avery and the rest of the salvagers were taken as slaves”
Life as a Slave
“Avery spent three years as a slave to a ruthless man named Jakob. Jakob is wanted on 36 different planets and has a reputation as a cruel pirate and a sadistic slave-master. Most of the salvagers captured were sold or executed, except Avery. Jakob found the young boy’s rebellious nature amusing and kept him around, on a tight leash. The one day that Avery was trusted, the boy disguised himself as a slaver and crashed the ship. The only survivors were Avery, Jakob and a handful of slavers. The boy escaped, and Jakob is still at large.”
Apprenticeship to Gail
“The ship crashed on Belsavis. Avery, without any food or money, reluctantly entered a job on a droid shop on planet. He would spend two years in the shop, in which he would learn life-long mechanical skills. His master, Gail, was a frail man with failing health. At the end of the two years, shortly after Avery had finished his apprenticeship, Gail died. The boy claimed that his master left his wealth to him, but no evidence was found. Belsavis authority issued an arrest warrant when the boy fled in his old master’s ship.”

“Avery resumed his career as a salvager, perusing the border between First Order and Galactic Alliance space. Where there was a battle, Avery would steal valuable materials from the wreckage of the ships, under the pretence of recovering ‘salvage’. The First Order caught him in the act. Emilia Ravel, a staff officer at the time, discovered the salvager stealing the black box from a First Order Dreadnought. Unfortunately, Avery escaped and the First Order issued a bounty on the boy.”
Association with the Red Devil Cartel
“Avery sought escape from justice with the Red Devil Cartel, a swoop gang prominent on Nar Shaddaa. There, Avery learned the skill of being a con artist. The gang members appreciated his unusual talents but Avery disliked fighting. He was often employed on non-lethal missions (i.e. blackmail and thievery). The gang was eventually eliminated by a rival faction and Avery fled the planet. It is surmised that Avery established a network of contacts during his time with the gang.”
Recent History
“Avery used his ill-gotten funds to return to his home on Rishi. He built a factory on the old site of the salvager compound and employed local salvagers to work for him. As pressure upped from the First Order, and as news of his bounty spread prolifically through the galaxy, Avery was forced to go into hiding. There have been very few sightings of him recently.”
