OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

Intent: To flesh out Enyo's retinue by providing a character who fills the role of scientist and researcher. Besides, I really like Qyburn's character in Game of Thrones. Every good warlord needs a Qyburn-like mad scientist.
Image Credit: Here. Found on patricksponaugle.com. Photo of Qyburn in Game of Thrones.
Role: Medical doctor, scientist and researcher, occasional torturer.
Permission: N/A
Links:
Pandemic, Galak Fyyar.

PHYSICAL INFORMATION
Age: 61
Force Sensitivity: Non-Force-User
Species: Human
Appearance: Of medium height, slightly stooped, with crinkles around his blue eyes. He has receding grey hair with a prominent widow's peak, a lean body and projects a fatherly air. In general, he looks rather unassuming and could probably pass as anyone's favourite, slightly eccentric uncle. Tends to wear simple dark robes. Bit messy with his looks.

SOCIAL INFORMATION
Name: Zakarias Vont
Loyalties: Science! Himself. Also Enyo Typhos, Archangel Research and Design, Iron Fist Consortium, Revenant Industries, Typhos Clone Family,
The Awakened.
Wealth: Modest.
Notable Possessions: An old, worn paper book with all his research notes in it. One of Zakarias' quirks is that he prefers the written word to datapads.
Skills: Specialist in scientific fields ranging from medical practices, to cybernetics, virology, biology, microbiology and biomedical tech. Has spent many years investigating Force phenomena and similar arcane manifestations from a rational, scientific perspectice. He is very knowledgeable about biological warfare research and development. Zakarias is an excellent surgeon.

Personality: Affable, polite, ruthless, extremely curious. While being a pretty awful person on the moral front, Zakarias is a pretty agreeable guy on the personal level. Soft-spoken, polite and considerate, he's pleasant company to be around. On the outside, he seems like a harmless, serene old man. When around children, he has the air of a kind uncle or grandfather.

However, despite his soft exterior, he is a fairly dangerous, cunning man. His strength does not lie in brute force or preternatural powers, but in his mind. He is secretive, ruthless and has no qualms about utilising unethical methods. In his opinion, his actions are justified by the need to bring about scientific advancement. Sharply intelligent, he conducts his business in a professional way. He isn't the type to display strong emotion, especially in an emergecy. His voice is even and mellow, disconcertingly so. Even as he goes about experimenting on a sentient being.

As a young man, Zakarias tried to gain entrance into the Sith Academy. However, his application was denied due to his lack of Force-sensitivty. This drove him to investigate the mystery called the Force. He considers it to be a physical phenomena to be investigated scientifically. He cannot feel or call upon the Force, but study it as much as possible in order to understand and possibly replicate it. He a passion for discovering new things and dislikes 'close-minded' individuals.

His immense curiosity drove him to conduct medical experiments not only on Force-sensitives, but also on Yuuzhan Vong in order to understand the so-called Force Dead phenomena. He regards Force-sensitivity as a genetic disorder that grants 0.01% of the Galaxy's population an advantage that enables them to exert power over those who lack it. In his eyes, both Jedi and Sith have done their part to stiffle progress by monopolising this power, while at the same time constructing a power structure that revolves around them. The pendulum swings in this, then that direction, but either of the two genetic royal families is dominant. In many ways, their duopoly has held the Galaxy back.

After all, if there are healers who can seemingly cure the worst ailments, there's less incentive to actually study diseases and come up with ways to treat or eradicate them with medicine. In his eyes, his dedication to the advancement of knowledge justifies the frankly inhumane and criminal experiments he conducts. His interest in medical matters has motivated him to turn to cybernetics as a means of improving the human body. They also offer a way of evening the odds for 'mundanes' vis-a-vis Force-users.

Zakarias has worked for Sith, the Atrisian Empire and all manners of shady groups. Right now, he works for Enyo Typhos, who found him in the underworld. While many dismissed him as a crazy old man, she saw his potential. However, his true allegiance has always been to himself. The Terminatrix is a good patron though. Moreover, he is quite fascinated by clones.

COMBAT INFORMATION
Weapon of Choice: His brain and minions mostly. Carries a hold-out blaster and is an expert poisoner.
Combat Function: Zakarias is not a fighter. He's physically weak and simply not good at it. He can use a blaster somewhat well, but is not a good shot and prefers to let minions do the fighting. Bottom line, his combat function is extremely minor. He's best kept out of fighting. However, while Zakarias is not Force-Sensitive, he knows a lot about healing and medicine. Thus he is very good at patching up the wounded, curing the diseased and the poisoned...or developing diseases and poisons.

Strengths:

  • Decent enough with a blaster pistol for an old man and a civilian.
  • Very good medic and poisoner.
Weaknesses:
  • He's an old man. He can't run a marathon and he's quite useless in melee. Seriously, he's poor in combat in general. His combat function is limited at best and he is best kept out of the fighting.
  • No Force powers. He's just an ordinary guy.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Zakarias was born in Korriban City close to the end of the Dark Age. His parents were merchants, who liked to claim that one of his ancestors had been a Sith Knight of renown. Whether this was true is dubious. Regardless, he grew up in a town close to the great monuments of the Sith Order's bloodstained past. Though Sith Purebloods were also extremely rare on the homeworld, to many inhabitants these monuments were a source of national pride. Nostalgia for a 'glorious' past has a way of making people forget about the terrible things the grand idols did. Excelling in his studies, he displayed a questioning, inquisitive mind.

As a young man, Zakarias applied to join the Sith Academy. However, the obligatory test showed that he was completely mundane and thus he was rejected. While understandable, this stung quite a bit. There were of course avenues for a non-Force-user to rise in rank and gain prestige among the Sith, though he would always remain beneath them. The most obvious avenue was the military, but even as a young man Zakarias was frail of body and not the stuff stormtroopers are made of.

Instead he chose a different course, namely science, and studied medicine. During his studies, Zakarias bacteria 'pets' in multiple petri dishes. This practice was considered rather odd. After graduating, he went into the medical profession. Opening up a respectable clinic in Kaas City, he seemed like a competent, if somewhat odd doctor. The appearance of mundanity was deceiving, for he was also a researcher for the Sith, conducting experiments that were supposed to benefit them and help the Dark Side eclipse the Light. Or something along those lines.

Intrigued by how the Force worked, he conducted experiments on captured Jedi Padawans and failed Sith Acolytes, aiming to understand how their power source worked and how they drew upon it. A great many of these experiments ended with the death of the test subjects, alas.
He caught the attention of Darth Shadow after he was able to cure one of the Ancient Sith Lord's lieutenants of a poison a rival had infected him with. Zakarias' efficiency and discretion met the approval of the Sith, and so he began to sponsor his work.

This got Zakarias involved in a secret project to create zombie supersoldiers. Using the resources at his disposal as a Sith Lord, Shadow had his goons abduct people from remote settlements on the Outer Rim and bring them to a secret laboratory. Here Zakarias helped him create abominations. Unlike the average zombie, these creatures were reasonably intelligent and efficient. On the side, Zakarias conducted his own research. However, the science experiment was rudely interrupted by the intrusion of Siobhan Kerrigan and Adril Tythorin.

At first, the intrusion of the two naughty rogue Jedi was beneficial, for Zakarias took blood samples and utilised them in the project. He would have experimented on the two Jedi as well, but sadly a nurse got a crisis of conscience and helped them escape. Then they started killing and making a mess of things. One can understand that this was terribly vexing for the good doctor, especially since the zombies turned out to be a bit too smart and rebelled.

Darth Shadow was seemingly killed during a duel with the pair. In actuality, he faked his own death and his spirit body-hopped into Adril Tythorin. Shortly thereafter, he was exorcised, but actually snuck into Siobhan's mind and had a jolly time tormenting her before being cast out for good. Many years later, she would finally face and kill him. However, that was not Zakarias' concern. With the project in shambles, he salvaged what he could and was canny enough to avoid being infected by a zombie.

Returning to the Sith Empire, he continued his research. He took a special interest in the work of Galak Fyyar, an Imperial Remnant warlord who'd successfully conducted experiments to artificially infuse the Force into individuals. Much of the man's accomplishments had centred on Artusian crystals and the Valley of the Jedi in Ruusan. To retrace his steps Zakarias travelled to Kejim Outpost and Ruusan.

However, he found the Sith Empire a poor environment to work in. While there was no shortage of people who would need a doctor and the various régimes kept him well-supplied in dissidents and 'undesirables' on whom he could experiment on freely, the rapid turnover of leadership irritated him. One Dark Lord followed the next, especially after the First Battle of Roche. He accompanied Sith forces to Togoria, where the Sith indulged in enslavement and genocidal activities. He ran tests on Togorians who were being held in a city-sized ghetto.

However, after the Republic went on the offensive, conquered Ossus and captured the Dark Lord of the time, he saw the writing on the wall and bailed. This was for the best since shortly thereafter, Dromund Kaas was levelled by the Mandalorians. For a while, he became a freelancer. Zakarias had been a very obscure, barely known figure during the Empire's rule. This helped him avoid being punished for war crimes, though he had a close call with Togorian freedom fighters who sought to punish those who had inflicted torment and genocide on their species. It goes without saying that he would have deserved the hangman's noose and worse.

However, his work caught the attention of the Atrisian Empire's Inquisition, who made him an offer he could not refuse. The Empire's anti-Force-user stance appealed to him, for Atrisia treated Force-users as dangerous weapons and kept them on a tight leash. While the Empire launched a failed invasion of the Omega Protectorate's capital and was subsequently assimilated by the Lords of the Fringe as an autonomous member state, he quietly worked in a lab. The Empire's foreign policy follies did not concern him. Then the Emperor was murdered by an unknown terrorist, and his cousin Empress Madeline Kahoshi initiated a purge against Force-users.

His handlers in the Inquisition were among the first to die - or end up on the operating table. Paranoid about the dangers posed by Force-users, the new régime sought ways to defend itself against the perceived threat. Much of this research centred on attempts to create bioweapons and Force Dead cyborgs. Aside from such activities, Zakarias also occasionally acted as a torturer and interrogator, putting his medical knowledge to good use when it came to questioning captives. It was useful for ensuring the subject remained alive. One of them happened to be a certain Sumiko Tanaka, who ironically had once been his handler in the Inquisition. However, all good things must come to an end, alas.

The increasing influence of a machine cult called Archangel perturbed Zakarias. While they had brilliant insights about cybernetics that he was eager to benefit from, he began to grow suspicious of them. Especially after he learned they could turn people into machines. While he liked the idea of human enhancement, he did not relish the idea of being turned into a machine himself...especially since it would not be really him, but just a replicant with a mind based on his. Eager for his research, they put him under pressure, and once even raided his lab. It was both a liberation and a cause of extreme irritation for him when former Grand Inquisitor Mirien Valdier and her minion Naamah Aesham assassinated the Empress.

Atrisia descended into a period of chaos, until a new Emperor bent the knee to the One Sith. By then Zakarias had already packed his bags and offered his services to the Sith juggernaut that was busy going on a conquest spree across the Core. While he mocked the idea of the One Sith Dark Lord being an omnipotent mastermind, he found the relative internal stability of the new Sith empire refreshing. To keep himself abreast on developments, he used the funds he'd acquired over the years to cultivate a network of child spies and informants. Moving to Alderaan, he had ample opportunity to study the effect Vong shaping had on the planet and elements of the population. Once his curiosity got him into trouble, as a Vong warrior took offence to it and Zakarias was lucky to survive after getting his throat cut. Hilariously, he was saved by Alderaanian freedom fighters, who were in the dark about his actual job.

Around this time period, Zakarias started working for a Sith Master called Darth Belial, who as an alchemist was quite willing to sponsor ethically reprehensible medical experiments. Belial happened to have a son called Alcibiades. This fellow lived the life of a pompous aristocrat, but, much to his father's disappointment, was not a Force-user. This frustrated the boy to no end, for he wanted to be like Daddy and dreamed of attaining unlimited power. After hearing about Zakarias' experiments, he more or less ordered the old man to help him become a space wizard.

While he found the young man's attitude rather boorish, Zakarias was only to happy to oblige.
Being a good doctor, he warned the lad that the process might...change him. It is always good to read the fine print before agreeing to let a mad scientist experiment on you. Before setting to work, he had to patiently explain to the aristo that Midichlorians are merely indicators of the Force and do not create it, and thus artificially boosting his Midichlorian count would not turn him into a space wizard. Instead Zakarias' methods were inspired by those of Galak Fyyar, revolving around the use of empowered Artusian crystals. This produced unstable Force-sensitivity. Zakarias elected to implant the crystal directly into Alcibiades, since the boy was really insistent about becoming a 'superman', as he put it. However, implantation could cause tremendous physical and mental issues for the user. Thus some mental alterations were needed to prevent him from going insane - and make him more compliant. When all was said and done, Alcibiades was able to use the Force...and had been turned into a shell of his former self.

When Belial learned of what had been done to his son, he declared the boy a stupid idiot, but vowed revenge. However, while he was torturing Zakarias with Force Lightning, his altered son struck him down with a lightsabre. With his last dying breath, Belial cursed him...not for betraying and murdering him, since that's how a Sith ought to act, but because the boy was not doing it to take his place, but rather due to being a puppet. That was the ultimate insult. Zakarias deemed it prudent to keep a low profile after this incident. For a while he worked for a Sith Lord called Darth Reinheit. His new sponsor was a human supremacist obsessed with alien Jedi conspiracies.

In keeping with his Social Darwinist views, he believed science and Sith alchemy could be used to improve humans and create a new breed of supermen. Thus he employed Zakarias to conduct experiments on 'volunteers'. One of them was the Sith's own daughter. The 'Beyond Human' experiments were a success to an extent. The candidates became stronger, tougher and faster. However, attempts to turn them Force-Sensitive failed. Zakarias wanted to proceed slowly and per the scientific method, but his patron kept rushing him.

Some candidates died. Others were able to gain a brief, unstable Force connection. Reinheit's daughter. Livia was one of them. But her powers soon burnt out. It did not help that Reinheit pushed her to excel and go beyond her limits, ignoring doctoral advice. For a while she could perform basic telekinesis, but summoning a big blast of Force Lightning gave her a seizure. The implanted crystal had to removed. Irritated by this, Reinheit decided to use her as a black ops operative and put her in command of Team Mirage. Zakarias came to consider his employer to be too boorish for his tastes.

He soon made the acquaintance of an unconventional Twi'lek Sith Lord called Darth Libertas, who followed an eccentric interpretation of the Sith Code based on self-actualisation. It bordered on anarchism. What intrigued Libertas were his attempts to turn Force blind into Force-users, so he presented her with his first prototype. She also happened to be a rival of Reinheit, who regarded Twi'leks as inferior to humans. Libertas protected Zakarias when Darth Reinheit sent his personal hit squad to abduct the scientist. It helped that Reinheit was a human supremacist and she suspected him of trying to undermine her movement.

Libertas decided to sponsor Zakarias' research, supplying him with a few volunteers and prisoners that could serve as test subjects. However, successful subjects tended to suffer from burnout due to their unstable Force connection. Midichlorian research was also attempted. Libertas continued to maintain an interest and shielded the scientists from rival Sith who coveted the research or regarded it as heretical. He continued to experiment on his new minion, enhancing him with cybernetic implants. However, Alcibiades' soon suffered burnout. His unnatural power bunt him up within two years.

When the One Sith Empire disintegrated, Zakarias found refuge in Lower Coruscant, avoiding possible prosecution for war crimes. There he ran a clinic, while ingragiating himself with some of the local crime lords. However, he was generally dismissed as a crazy old man. He deliberately cultivated the air of a somewhat eccentric old man who was no threat to anyone, but whose medical knowledge made him useful to keep around. This changed when he crossed paths with Enyo Typhos, who was the spitting image of the Siobhan Kerrigan who had intruded on his experiments so many years ago. Recognising his utility, the Terminatrix hired him. At first his small network of informants aided her in the local gang wars by providing information on the Iron Fist Consortium's rivals. Accompanying her to Mirial, he got the opportunity to study the local zombie outbreak, though the work was interrupted by the battle between the Silver Jedi and the Sith. In the aftermath, he helped treat Mirialans who had been burnt by the Wall of Light blast in the city. He has served Enyo's gang as a doctor, machinist and helped design cybernetic augmentations, as many of her soldiers as cyborgs. Lately he's started creating monsters for her by grafting cybernetics onto war beasts.

Zakarias got a chance to showcase his skills when a pandemic broke out in the slums of Coruscant. A think tank of bioterrorists had weaponised a disease in order to cleanse big cities of overpopulation. They called the Galactic Sustainability Trust. However, their test subject escaped and released the virus prematuraly before they could manufacture an antidote to protect the 'worthy'. Since this happened in her bailiwick, Enyo had to take action. Panic broke out as hospitals found themselves inundated with patients. Moreover, gangs started fighting. Enyo Typhos, head of the Iron Fist Consortium, took an interest as her 'enterprise' operated in this area.

While Zakarias studied the virus and infectees at an Iron Fist facility, Enyo looked for those responsible as well as patient zero. Having determined that the disease had to be bio-engineered, he aided Enyo by providing his scientific expertise. With the help of a Sith scientist called Farah, the Consortium was able to locate patient zero as well as the cabal. Moreover, Enyo kidnapped the leader of the cabal, who had been masquerading as a philantrophist. Farah and Enyo's scientists came up with a cure.

However, while the Cyborg found the Trust's methods crude, she did not get rid of the virus. It could, after all, prove useful. Besides, she could not get sick anyway. Thus she decided to keep and refine the virus rather than destroying it. Zakarias oversaw the integration of the Trust's research staff into the Iron Fist Consortium and the completion of the bioweapon. Naturally, Archangel also created a vaccine. After all, Enyo does not want her posse, especially her own siblings, to get sick. Enyo's goals differed from those of the Trust, as she was not interested in using the virus for genocide. Her focus was more surgical. Moreover, the bioweapon was a useful insurance policy. The
end product was highly infectious and had a high lethality, but a short survival period outside of the host. This was a limitation, but also a strategic choice, as it gave the virus greater battlefield application.

Zakarias has also worked with the Awakened, a sect of Dark Acolytes loyal to Enyo. He is not formally a member of the group as he is not Force-Sensitive, but acts as their chief doctor. This has allowed him to continue his experiments, as some of the Awakened never had the Force to begin with or were only weak Force-Sensitives. One of his test subjects was a former First Order Stormtrooper with the designation FN-1922, who turned on his warlord and joined Enyo. The experiment was a success and the former whitehead, who now calls himself Titus, is now a Force-wielder. Zakarias continues to work for Enyo, though he pursues his own projects on the side. Her takeover of Archangel Research and Design has given him a bigger budget and a larger laboratory.
