Zeta Red is the second, and most important iteration of the compounds created by the distillation of Alpha Red II.
Like its cousin, Zeta Red was created through the manipulation of Alpha Red II originally crafted by the Star Cabal. As well, like Theta Red, Zeta Red was originally researched, created, and manufactured by Titan Industries, Rythana Labs, ATC, and [member="Ina'nai'sabosen"]. The compound was produced at the same time as Theta Red and as a countermeasure to both Alpha and Theta Red should the two compounds ever get loose. Of course, it's eventual development took longer but in the end was easier to produce and as effective as it needed to be.
If Alpha Red II was titled as "Weapon", and Theta Red was "Vaccine", then the best label for Zeta Red is "Cure".
Perhaps the simplest by concept and idea, Zeta Red was created as a cure for Alpha Red II, Theta Red, and all derivatives of the original Alpha Red Serum.
Out of all the concepts born of the original Alpha Red and its later stage Alpha Red II, Zeta Red is the most complex, and most expensive to produce. The Compound itself works very similar to Alpha Red, the researchers of Titan Industries having found that in order to fight the "weapon" they needed to create another "weapon". This logical reasoning came about at the hands of the Chiss [member="Ina'nai'sabosen"] and was indeed found the best way to tackle the issue. Though it took months to complete, and millions of credits into research, Zeta Red eventually came about as a cure for Alpha Red and all of its derivatives.
The Compound, unfortunately, could not be created as a Vaccine. Instead, Zeta Red could only function as a cure. The serum needed to be injected within an hour of infection via Alpha Red, this is due to how Zeta Red actually functions. Instead of laying dormant or acting as an antigen, as with Theta Red, Zeta Red instead "purges" the body of the original Alpha Red. This of course, means that Zeta red actually works on all derivatives of the Original Alpha Red formula, working quickly to expunge the body and destroy all traces of Alpha Red, Omega Red, etc, but only if the compound has sole basis in Alpha Red and is not a mixture of other pathogens. This is incredibly effective, although intensely painful to those injected with the cure. The Cure works on all species.
The pain, however, is generally viewed as a good thing given that it means survival. The effects of Zeta Red on the body are harsh. Along with the pain there are after effects of intense sensitivity, hallucinations both auditory and visual, light sensitivity, and diarrhea. as It should also be noted that Zeta Red is not an instant recovery agent, it cannot fix the damage that the iteration of Alpha Red has already done on the body, which will generally require a good soak in bacta or the use of other healing agents to fix.
Like the other two compounds, Zeta Red was one of the recipes stolen by Alric Kuhn when he left Titan Industries. With his return to the galaxy, and the beginning production of both Alpha Red II and Theta Red the creation of new batches of Zeta Red was one of the first and most important aspects of his return. Void Genetics focuses most of its production of Zeta Red, the cure for any Alpha Red by-product. This is due to the fact that Alpha Red II needs to be produced in order for Theta Red to exist and also to counter-act any further attempts by the Star-Cabal, or any other organization, to utilize Alpha Red.
