SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Developed as something to better counter the proliferation of advanced shielding systems, the Aerospark when it nears a target starship's shielding bubble or is even intercepted by point defense fire explodes into a cloud of small individual field disruptors that can pass through the shields of a target. Once through the shield, they adhere to the hull of the vessel using the magnetic clamps on the devices and then emitting a disruption bubble that opens multiple holes in a shield.
STRENGTHS
  • The Aerospark, once it nears a target or is intercepted by fire, explodes into a cloud of miniature field disruptors that adhere to a target's hull and disrupt any shielding they are projecting for several minutes.
WEAKNESSES
  • The Aerospark deals absolutely no damage to a target, besides maybe some shrapnel from the casing exploding open. The entire shell is designed purely to disrupt enemy shields and prepare it for the secondary bombardment coming with more stopping power.
  • The individual field disruptors released by the shell only have enough power to disrupt the shields of their target for a few minutes. After that, they are merely junk stuck to the hull until they are removed or the vessel is destroyed.
DESCRIPTION

With the proliferation of more advanced shielding systems throughout the galaxy, specifically Molecular Shielding, Thermal Shielding, and the Xythan Energy Shield, Aurora Industries began looking at avenues to potentially counteract such besides improving their weapon systems to beat against them until they fall. One design team from the Aurora facility on Druckenwell struck upon the idea of making use of Aurora mass drivers and to be developed artillery systems for delivering a shell that could disrupt the shields directly.

The team, once receiving the greenlight from Merryn, began developing the AI-S1 "Aerospark" Disruption Shell. Beginning life as a shrapnel or flak shell, the new munition instead releases miniaturized individual field disruptors once it nears a targeted vessel with a proximity sensor or if shell is intercepted by enemy defensive fire. Once it explodes, the payload of field disruptors is released and passes through the shielding of the targeted vessel to magnetically seal themselves to the hull. Once attached, the disruptors activate and generate essentially a bubble within the shield of disruptive energy, creating holes within the shielding of a vessel. Utilizing a Sianarc Power Pack within, it can maintain a maximum strength field for a few minutes.

The Aerospark, while it deals no damage itself, is designed to give the gunners of allied ships a target for their own fire, acting essentially as bull's eye for gunners to aim for.
