Hierarchy of the Outer Order

The hierarchy of the Outer Order is based on a four-tier system. The “blind and bound” uninitiated are of Tier 0. Those who have attained some level of awareness and wisdom in the ways of the cosmos rise through the ranks of Tier 1 (the “Initiation Tier”). Those who are of an advanced level of awareness and wisdom, who primarily seek growth and self-instruction independent of the Order, are of Tier 2 (the “Advanced Tier”). Those who have attained the highest levels of awareness and wisdom, who represent the very Force itself in physical form, are of Tier 3 (the “Divine Tier”).

3 - 8: High Priestess
3 - 7: Priest/ess
2 - 6: Theurgist
2 - 5: Thaumaturge
2 - 4: Diviner
1 - 3: Disciple
1 - 2: Initiate
1 - 1: Neophyte
0 - 0: Layman

Details on Rank:

Layman: The uninitiated general public, the “blind and bound”. Layman may attend public ceremonies and gatherings as an observer at the Cathedral of Nessus.

Neophyte: A newly-joined member of the Order who must undergo a pilgrimage to the Rendarr Mountains on Kisk, whereupon one might find a crystal cave of unfathomable size. Within this cave, the Neophyte seeks the single Force crystal that resonates strongest with them, and thus claim it for themselves. Few Neophytes survive this journey. Those who do become fully initiated into the Order. Some Neophytes choose instead to become Wardens of the Citadel.

Initiate: The Neophyte who successful completes a pilgrimage to the Rendarr Mountains becomes an Initiate of the Order. Initiates are drilled vigorously in the light and dark sides of the Force. At the end of their training, they are required to pass the Initiate Trials and take the Oath of Illumination.

Disciple: The Initiate who has successfully completed their trials becomes a Disciple. Disciples are given access to more advanced levels of Force skills. To mark the end of their journey through the Initiation Tier, Disciples must complete the Trials of the Disciple where they are required to meditate within the Abyss of Thrax and beneath the Fountains of Illumination and meditate on their respective opposing sides of the Force upon which they are exposed to for ten night and day cycles without food or sleep. If they survive, and are able to maintain balance throughout this time, they ascend to the rank of Diviner.

Diviner: The Diviner has achieved ascension into the advanced levels of the cosmological hierarchy. Diviners are required to travel out into the galaxy and learn as much as they can independently with their newfound perspective and awareness, applying the values of the Order to everything they do. Diviners are charged with acquiring texts, holocrons and artefacts that may serve the Order, generally acting as seekers of worldly knowledge, diplomats and missionaries. This is an important time for the student, for it is during this time the temptation to fall out of balance is most prevalent. When they are deemed experienced enough, and have maintained balance within themselves, the Diviner is expected to pass trials assigned by the Priesthood, determined specific to the student.

Thaumaturge: When the Diviner passes their trials, they become a Thaumaturge. Thaumaturges are given access to advanced esoteric knowledge of the Force and it is expected of them to contribute their own perceptions and contemplations to great detail. One half of a Thaumaturge’s duties is focused on teaching those of lower ranks to ascend to higher levels, while the other half demands hours of studying the intricacies and subtleties of the Force in its many aspects, deep within the halls of the Kisk Archives. The final trial of a Thaumaturge is a thesis on a topic of their choosing.

Theurgist: The Theurgist has a mastery of knowledge of the Force and all of its aspects. They have access to all levels of the Kisk Archives and are expected to commit considerable time to their study and training, as well as act as representatives of the Order to the rest of the galaxy, seeking hidden knowledge that will serve it. On occasion, the exceptional amongst the Theurgists of the Order are personally invited to join the Priesthood, if they have presented extraordinary practice.

Priest/ess: The five Priests of O.O. are the very embodiment of the Order and have fully committed themselves to a lifetime of study of the Force in all of its aspects. Answering only to the High Priest, their home is the Citadel where they have constant access to the Arcanaeum, the holy archives of the O.O. containing the most secret and forbidden texts of wisdom from around the galaxy. The duties of the Priesthood involves the development of theses to serve the Order, teaching advanced students, taking pilgrimages and ensuring the will of the High Priest is carried out.

High Priest/ess: Should the circumstance require it, the Priesthood may demand a new leader, and of the five Priests a High Priest is chosen by vote. Upon the ascension of a new High Priest, a vacancy on the Priesthood will open to a Theurgist deemed worthy, and this is usually decided within two weeks of the ascension of the new High Priest. Duties of the High Priest are of his or her own concern.

All ceremonies of ascension are performed at the Stones of Ortus.

Other Titles:

Warden: A Warden is an ascended Neophyte who, rather than taking the title of Initiate, has instead become an assistant to the students and the Priesthood. Duties of a Warden may include administration, the organisation of texts and stewardship.

Knight: A Knight is one who has embraced the beliefs of the Order, but rather than pursue the journey through the Tiers they have sworn to protect the secrets of the Outer Order, frequently acting as guards and soldiers. They are trained in basic knowledge of the Force and must build specially designed lightsabers for their duties.

Inquisitor: The Inquisitors are members of the Order who have held the ranks of Diviner or above but have, rather than choosing to continue the path of Illumination, have instead chosen to take the Oath of Absolution, serving as the Order’s intelligence network. They are awarded a Force staff upon their ascension and their duties include the discovery, interrogation and execution of the enemies of the Order. The Inquisitors are divided into three ranks: Junior Inquisitor, Senior Inquisitor and High Inquisitor. On occasion, the High Inquisitor may be invited to join the council of the Priesthood, but is not named an official member.
