SPECIAL FEATURES
- ECM/ECCM
- High Density Fusion Thrusters
- Extremely High Damage.
- Very high acceleration and velocity.
- ECM/ECCM Suites and high speeds make the weapons difficult to target by ship defense turrets.
- Jam-Resistant
- Very Large Blast Radius
- Radiation and EMP after-effects.
- Can be shot down/destroyed/intercepted.
- Still Kinetic, though Nukes give off pretty intense energy.
- SFGM-21J's must be given a finite limit on a ship sub (scaling with the size of the ship, up to 20 or 30 on a destroyer).
- Can be targeted and intercepted by fighters, though it's difficult due to their speed.
- Can miss, especially when fired at smaller, more maneuverable ships.
- Absorbed by shields.
More unusual (though no more iconic) than the prevalence of kinetic guns on Lakonian ships is their continued usage of long-range antiship missiles. In an age when missiles are typically seen as a short-ranged high-damage weapon, Lakonian ships still utilize nuclear and other types of warheads, in defiance of old Republic prohibitions and all conventions of war.
Like its more conventional brethren the Genie missile is fired from the Mk 14 HMLS (Heavy Missile Launch System) at a high velocity. Unlike its smaller cousins, it gives off a very distinctive energy signature, a by-product of the fusion bottle that makes up its warhead. This is fairly easy to detect, though not necessarily to lock down, which means that a targeted ship will know a nuke has been fired at it. Shooting the weapon down remains a function of fire control and is otherwise similar to the other missiles.
The SFGM-21J is a full size thermonuclear fusion device, and strikes with the force of several volleys of Assault Concussion Missiles. In modern warfare it is unlikely to destroy a ship outright but if it were to strike an un-shielded vessel could do incredible damage. The blast radius is large enough that ships in a close formation would also receive damage (though much mitigated) and nearby strike craft would likely be destroyed by the explosion. Targeted vessels would also receive potentially lethal doses of radiation and a an EMP effect from the blast. The radiation is localized (it doesn't travel through space well) but the EMP has a wider area of effect than even the explosive radius.
As most of the damage inflicted by a thermonuclear warhead is based on energy decay and heat release, the Genie is dramatically less effective against a shielded target. An otherwise untouched warship wold likely lose its shields but suffer only light damage to its armor. This varies by class and degree of protection of course (for example a fast corvette is unlikely to survive in any functional form no matter the state of its shields, but can relatively easily dodge the weapon, whereas a defense-focused dreadnought could weather multiple direct hits.)
The warhead detonation is also a significant event on the battlefield because of its sudden flare, nearly equivalent to that of a small warship losing reactor containment. A succession of strikes hitting one target would be a brilliant display indeed.
