Forever to the Stars

"Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them."
-- Marcus Aurelius, Roman emperor
The Aeternum (Emperor), may they Illume forever, brings order and stability to the peoples of the remote worlds within the Astrorum Imperium. With the support of the Constellations (Nobles) the people of the Imperium are protected and given every opportunity to elevate themselves -- to reach higher heights, and to help their worlds shine as bright as the stars themselves. What greater purpose could there be but to become as radiant, as enduring, as eternal as the universes' crowning glories?
With the Imperium worlds remote even by Tattooine standards, it has avoided becoming entangled in the wider galaxy's political, economic, or military affairs. It knew of the republics and empires that have come and gone, but had no desire to establish contact with any of them. Such involvement might disturb the balance and achievements of the Imperium for no gain.
And that would have remained the case for the lifespan of the galaxy, if they'd had their way; only their philosophical opposites, the Obscura, seemed to acquire technology and resources not native to their region of space. Forced to confront the idea that those seeking to destroy the Imperium might have gotten outside help, the Aeternum ordered the creation of a vessel and sent it into the heart of the galaxy. There they would determine the extent of the corrupting influence, and sever it -- restoring the balance.
