Technically 6 years have passed since the Netherworld event, but you're in no way required to age your character if you didn't want to. So you can realistically choose how you want to handle that aspect.
As far as the direction, the Republic Military is off limits to Jedi. The idea behind that was to keep the two entities separate so that there wouldn't be any more future complications of Jedi commanding the Republic military, like there was in the past.
