Private A Meeting of Minds (Elpsis)

Elpsis Kerrigan Elpsis Kerrigan

Lalax nodded. "Many people do not appreciate the importance of good record keeping!" she declared earnestly. Her filing system was very much superior to most others she had seen. Having grown up only with physical files she had to have good discipline, unlike the sky people and their machine databases.
"You are a brave warrior," she nodded in approval to Tarzar. "I can see why the Lady Jai Vahal chose you," she added.

Lalax listened to Sahmara's tale, eventually nodding. "We had such promise and such possibilities. It felt that all would be clear, but then we heard of the crimes. I did not believe at first that the Karrigan knew of it, or that she condoned it. I felt...hurt...when I learned the truth," she said with a sigh. "I think there was once a noble goal, but it was seduced by greed and desire for worship. I considered changing my name, but in this circumstances I decided to retain it because I feel Alpsis has good intentions."
Her frown eventually faded. "What of your child? Is it a boy or girl? What is their name?" she asked, her tone happier again after the melancholy discussion.
She gently stroked her thumb over Yaritha's hand.

Meanwhile Lia had descended the stairs in a thoughtful mood. When Shazora spoke she started slightly.
"Ah, yes. It was...enlightening. There was one matter I would like to discuss, yes. As you might be aware, we have been 'repatriating' artefacts our fore-mothers 'acquired' from many lands as trophies. Some of these are definitely of Farzian origin. There are others we are uncertain of. I would like to invite you to send a party to investigate and return what was stolen."
The Queen glanced towards Hazani. "We have already done so with the Sistren, and with the Suquans. Though there have been voices which contend we should keep them, and some whose anonymous whispers reach me that they should be sold to whoever can pay...I do not wish this. Rather, I intend you to take them freely, not just as a gesture of friendship, but as a way of righting a wrong."

xxx

Phylis considered the question. "Hmm, well, it greatly increases the body's healing capacity. Therefore it, hmmph, cannot regrow lost body parts or limbs. It will also not aid those with mental or psychological ills. It is best used on conventional injuries; cuts, breaks, contusions, burns and so forth. It will, hmm, provide some assistance to the sick, but it will not neutralise poison or venom. There are techniques for that I know, but they are much more, hmm, hands on."
She placed the box in Elpsis' hands. The box barely contained the aura of the power within. Viewing the dust with the Force would be like looking into a bright white light. Illuminating...but also blinding if looked at too long, or when emerging from the darkness.

"We were all deceived, sister, feel no shame. I curse Tegaea for seducing her," Xalda said solemly.
"He's a boy! His name is Kajaras!" Sahmara declared, now feeling less morose. "He's a handful, a little Yaz, that one. But I love him." She didn't say it, but she'd named him after his father, her former master.
"Sounds like some of my siblings," Yaritha said good-naturedly. Not her, of course. "I'd like to see the little man one day. Where do you live now?"
"Suqua. The Mirza of Lakish is all right, but I have no wish to live under Semiramis. She's a snake, and if there's strife I don't want to be forced to fight my sisters."
"I've heard she's inviting sky people back in to get their money. A viper among vipers," Tarzar said, shaking his head. "We need only place faith in ourselves, the goddess and gods, and our people, not from the stars."

xxx

What a curious word choice, Shazora thought, but said nothing. Her outward expression remained placid as she considered the Queen's words. People did not do things simply to write wrongs. Especially not leaders. She need only look at herself in the mirror. But two could play this game. "That is a most enlightened act of yours, thank you. I will consult with the relevant experts so we can dispatch a suitable delegation. It cannot make the past go away...but it will go some way to healing wounds that continue to fester."

"Speaking of which, I must admit we have a regrettable shadow of our own that looms over our present. As I'm sure you know, there are some Xioquo on Farzi. Their numbers are a few...but most used to be slaves. Xio taken captive when we repelled your raids, or purchased from Khaimari or Ajustran merchants. They were eventually freed, of course, but...ill-treated in many cases. They continued to live on the margins of society, often akin to indentured workers. Make no mistake, it was the Xio who came to us with fire and blood to take us as chattel...but nonetheless this is a sad chapter in our shared history. Certain elements in the Majiles wish to make some sort of restitution. But as I'm sure you can see, the issue is quite toxic. I can't be seen to be favouring the Xio over my people, so the issue languishes in committee."

"But perhaps we could connect it with the matter of the artefacts. A museum is scheduled to open in Lakhna in three months. It will detail our struggles against the Khaimari, humans, Xio and now the Eldorai. Perhaps we could visit together."

xxx

Elpsis carefully took the box in hand - her flesh hand, lest she underestimate her grip and accidentally break it. Through the Force, the dust looked magnificent. Like a bright light that never dimmed. "I will treasure this...thank you, Phylis."
Then she heard a cough.
Turning, she found herself looking upon..."Shikoba."
"That is my name," the druidess said a bit impatiently. "I have ventured far, endured this cage of metal and concrete and fake nature..."
Elpsis put the small box away, crossed the distance, and silenced her with a hug. Shikoba went very rigid, looking confounded.

"This is a lovely name!" Lalax declared happily. "I would wish also to meet him some time. I hope we get the chance to visit there when things are quieter."
She nodded thoughtfully to Tarzar. "This is true. The sky people have things to share, but too often they have come with one hand extended...and one hand concealed. Not all are bad, but we must place trust in ourselves. We will make a better future."

xxx

Lia nodded. If she knew of these Xio in Farzi she made no sign, instead showed polite interest. "That sounds an excellent suggestion, Lady Jai Vahal. Indeed, I think it would be the perfect time to discuss such a matter. However, I have a thought about this memorial. I would caution against a blanket labelling of all Xio as responsible. The crimes of my people were great, but just as not all Qadiri are Khaimari, nor are all of us slavers then or now. With that in mind I would wish to see images of these displays before I visit there. It would help me be prepared for what I will see, and therefore be more able to answer any questions which might come up."
The unspoken point being that it would help her any potential embarrassments.
"All being equal I might be able to bring some of the smaller artefacts and return them at this event. In the intervening time we can discuss those Xio who live amongst you and see who might wish to return...or if any are wanted for crimes."

xxx

Phylis bowed slightly, then started at the approach of Shikoba. "Ah, hmm, Shikoba, I am pleased to see you again. I wanted to, hmm, thank you for your assistance with that issue I had with the holocron. Hmmph, I had not realised it was haunted."
She paused also as the two hugged. The Jedi stood by a little awkwarrdly waiting for them to finish.
"Hmm, I think we are nearly done with this meeting. Did you hmm, wish to stay around for the rest of the evening or are you heading back to Suqua?"

Phylis Alince Phylis Alince

"Too true," Tarzar commented, thumping the table in affirmation. "I'm not sure if you've heard, but we're going to open a new museum in Lakhna in a couple months. About our struggles against foreign invaders. I know my wife mentioned she wanted to chat with your Queen about it," he glanced at Lalax and Xalda. "You know, get a Xio perspective, maybe include a memorial. I can make sure you all get tickets for the opening."

xxx

If Shazora was offended by this, her expression didn't give it away. "Oh, by all means. You may send a delegation to take a preliminary look at it even, if you wish. I only ask that you don't send the more...close-minded representatives. We've both had to placate individuals and families we'd rather not, I understand, and I don't think either of us wants to provide for their barbs and arrows," she smiled diplomatically.

"I shall speak with my minister of home affairs, and have my office ensure that any pertinent information of our Xio...community is made available." For all her self-control, Shazora could not entirely hide the fact that she was not fond of Xio. But she was making an effort.

xxx

Shikoba looked relieved when Elpsis released her. "You embraced me," she said pointedly.
"Yes. Was that...alright?" Elpsis said awkwardly.
"It felt...strange and a bit tight...but not unpleasant. You wish to display to me that you missed my presence and that you are gladdened I have no perished?"
Elpsis suppressed a sigh. "Yes..that."
"That is a kind thought. I am glad you have perished either."
"Thank you, Shikoba. You're a loyal friend, and very brave." Not like the cowards and fools who only got their arse in gear when there was no risk in fighting Firemane, she thought bitterly. Many supposed friends had been among them. Oh, they'd made all manners of excuses, but it all boiled down to two things: cowardice and complacency. Selfishness. Necessity had forced her to accept them as allies...but she hadn't forgiven or forgotten. She never would.

She glanced towards Phylis. "Wanted to leave right after the meeting. Not like much of substance was discussed after the meet and greet," she said bluntly, "but I figure I'll stick around till tomorrow morning. I've got work to do." She didn't expect any thanks for it.

If Lalax seemed uncertain about it, she did not show it. Instead she showed enthusiasm. "This sounds a most interesting idea!" she declared. "We have a similar monument in the Underealm to lament those lost in the wars but also to the Mistresses' cruelty. There is much cruelty which has been done, from those beyond the stars, and from those within our own realms. A monument to it, which shows the true nature of it is welcome. If I can visit for it, I shall."

xxx

"Of course, I will send some of my people who can be trusted to have an even-handed and fair view of matters. After all, I wish for the crimes of my mother and he ilk to be on display...just not in a way which adjudges all those now the same."

xxx

Phylis nodded. "Hmm, well, I'm not a big one for feasts. I like the idea of them, but I've never quite seen the point in over-indulgence. Hmmph, I would make a poor ruler or leader, for this and many reasons," she said with a little smile.

As she was speaking Tylania came down the stairs behind them, and a loud gong rung. "That is, I believe, the signal that everything is prepared outside. Shall we go?" she asked Elpsis, though it was an invitation to all.

xxx

"If you wish to go, I shall accompany you, love," Yaritha said sweetly and loyally, rubbing the palm of Lalax' hand with her thumb.
"Our memorial in Tlaxui is very moving. You feel the presence of the lost, even if you cannot hear them. They're there, they watch," Xalda said. For a moment, she seemed a bit melancholy. "I do not know if I shall be able to come, but I am glad you are erecting such a place."

xxx

"Our people's history is bloody, and the unity forged by the struggle against the sky people was never meant to last. I don't promise eternal friendship because I'm no fool, and neither are you. Our people's interests must always come first. But my hope is that we can write a new chapter together. A less blood-stained one," Shazora said softly. At this moment the gong sounded. "Well, I suppose the break is over."

xxx

"Not keen on them either. Wasteful," Elpsis muttered. "My mothers loved them, of course. If they were the centre of attention." Nothing could hide the trace of bitterness in her tone.

A loud gong rang, and Tylania stepped down the stairs. It seemed like she was gliding. Elpsis gave her a nod. "Yes, sure," she said a bit distractedly. Thinking about her parents had left her in a morose mood.

"There is to be a hunt later, correct, Lady?" Hazani asked, having approached them to see what was up.
"A true one? Or the bastard abomination of the sky people?" Shikoba asked airily.

Outside, Yara strode over in time to hear Shikoba's question. "The proper kind. Bow, spear and axe, mounted on Partuz or on foot." She'd somehow found time to don a hunting cloak and carried a long spear. "We hunt for food and for skill, not for fun or cruelty. Would you like to take part, else we can organise a tour of the city."
Phylis frowned. "Hmm, not really much for hunting. A skillful task, and one I've had to do before when needed...but hmm, not by choice."
Yara nodded, looking to Elpsis and Hazani. "Interested?"

Lia nodded. "Not everything will be harmonious, and we are long leagues apart. All I wish is that we can put aside the past and not fight each other anymore over what has been. We have greater threats to consider, after all."
Overhearing the discussion with Elpsis and Yara she glanced at Shazora. "I don't suspect I'll be going hunting. How about you, Lady Jai Vahal?"

Meanwhile, Lalax excused herself from the group and holding Yaritha's she approached Elpsis. "Sister Alpsis, you have met Yaritha I know. I have of you a request. Yaritha wishes me to go to her clan home, and I wish to go also. However, it would mean I need take leave of my duties for several days! I regret the short notice, but might I night be excused for this visit?" she asked apprehensively.
Her earnest smile trembled slightly, as if worried Elpsis might refuse her. She gently squeezed Yaritha's hand. Realising she may have somewhat blundered into a discussion she flushed slightly. "Oh, my pardon for interrupting!"

Phylis Alince Phylis Alince

"No, I'm afraid I'm not that martial," Shazora replied.
As if on cue, Tarzar approached her and bowed to his wife with a flourish. "By your leave, my Lady?" he asked with no small amount of camp. "I wish to honour the local traditions and test myself against the manifold beasts of these forests."
There was the smallest, involuntary quirk of a smile on Shazora's face. He sounded so utterly ridiculous...yet it was sort of endearing. "Very well, husband. But no trophies in my house, do you understand?" she said sternly.
"My Lady will surely change her mind when I bring her a worthy one. There is a beast called-"
"No trophies, they do not go well with the decoration."
"My Lady is most stern, but I shall heed her wishes."
Shazora gave Lia a look, as if to silently ask 'is yours like that, too?"

Elpsis was about to respond to Yara when Lalax suddenly sort of blundered in. She noticed that Yaritha was with her, heard her words, frowned. The denial was quick on her tongue. We're not here for fun, she thought irritably. Not that I've done much that's useful, she suppressed a sigh. What had the point of much of this charade been?

Her gaze fell upon Yaritha. So...her. Not you. Of course not. No one will want you for anything other than your name, and your battle prowess. "Alright, fine. Couple days. Some advanced notice would be nice next time. But go...and take care. The forests can get dangerous and there's the sun..." Abruptly, she pulled Lalax into a hug, placing a kiss on her cheek. "Look after her, got it?" she told Yaritha sternly.
"I shall protect her with my life," Yaritha said firmly.
You're weak and foolish, girl. You let these pretty elves manipulate you like putty in their hands. A cute smile and a pointed ear is all you need to give them what they want. You always did lack discipline, what sounded like the voice of a long-dead ghost whispered, words crawling beneath her skin like maggots.
"I wish you a good journey, sister," Xalda said sweetly to Lalax.
A glance from Elpsis towards Yara. "I'm in," she said simply.
"So am I," Hazani affirmed. "I'll need a change of clothes." For she had donned the embroidered, ceremonial robes of her order, and those were obviously not suitable for a hunt in the wilderness.

It took all of Lia's carefully cultivated poise and courtly training not to facepalm slightly. There was the slightest nod to Shazora. Though he was less...flamboyant...her consort would often make a show of things. Some of it was out of a genuine sense of wanting to help out, but some of it was to make things a bit more interesting.
"I don't suspect it will keep well on the flight home, unless you want a taxidermy head or two filling your shuttle," she said instead. "I think that your brave exploits will be more than enough," she added tactfully.

xxx

Lalax looked immediately contrite. "Oh, yes, of course, sister. A thousand apologies. It is just that Yaritha asked, and it was a surprise but I wanted to go and..." she trailed off. "Thank you, sister, I will not be long!"
She was the pulled into a hug, and after a second of surprise she returned it feelingly. She gave Elpsis a kiss on the cheek. "Fear not, my brave Yaritha will protect me, I'm sure!" she added.

Yara nodded once to Hazani. She headed to a chest and returned with some toughened leather armour supplemented with metal bands. It was primitive for the galaxy, but good against the wildlife. She had a set for Elpsis too. Both seemed to be the exactly correct size, or as close as possible.
"Come. Will you ride or go on foot?" Yara asked them both as she led them down towards one of the bridges which crossed to the mainland. It was the direction Yaritha and Lalax would be departing too.
In the distance several Partuz were waiting with keepers on the other side. Yara was clearly at ease around the giant arachnids, but only time would tell how Hazani and Tarzar thought about riding one!

Phylis Alince Phylis Alince

"Curses, foiled again. I shall have to imagine it," Tarzar said with mock disappointment, though he seemed to recover pretty soon.
"Away with you, husband. Go earn some glory or something," Shazora said, once again feeling uncertain whether she should be amused or facepalm. It tended to be a bit of both most of the time. Regardless, she extended her slender hand, and with the practiced skill of an officer and gentleman, Tarzar gently reached for it and brushed his lips gently to the top of her wrist. He gave the Xio Queen a polite nod. Then he was off to get dressed appropriately.

xxx

"Absolutely," Yaritha affirmed. Elpsis just gave the Vashyada a look, and turned away without a further word. Yaritha fidgeted slightly now that they were mostly alone. "I...uh, haven't gotten you into trouble, have I? I probably should've told you sooner...but I wanted it to be a surprise," she said, feeling a bit self-conscious. "I've prepared some supplies, and stuff...and a map so you can where we're going."

Finally, no endless chatter, no speechifying, Elpsis thought to herself. A bit too cynical? Perhaps. She was a doer. Being stationary, spending too much time talking made her feel restless. And, worse than that, indolent.

"I'm gonna ride," she said firmly, "Not my first time."
"Me, too," Tarzar affirmed jovially. "We have some Vash on Farzi, they brought their mounts along," he added.
"No saddle," Shikoba interjected, giving both a stern look. "The Partuz does not like it, and a true rider has no need of it."

Hazani glanced towards the large spiders across the bridge. She suppressed a slight shudder. Intellectually, she knew it was a bit silly, but she felt more at home on the back of a Yazgid. Sure, a Yaz never fully domesticated, but it was a beast she knew and understood. The Partuz was unsettling. "I shall go on foot. I don't mind some dirt."
"That goes for me as well," Sahmara chimed in.

Xalda looked a bit pensive, then nodded. "These creatures are beautiful, but I've never ridden one, and would not want to maltreat it by ridng it without proper knowledge," she said.

"Well...the lot of you have a good time," Izana said, brushing some imaginary spec of dust from her robes. "By your leave, my Lady?" she asked Elpsis. "I wish to explore the holy places of this city."

"Good hunting, sister. This brings me back. I remember your mother on her first hunt. Bit clumsy back then, but she had heart," Mahisa spoke, patting Hazani on the shoulder with her wrinkled hand. "I shall watch."

Elpsis Kerrigan Elpsis Kerrigan

Shazora and Lia were left mostly alone for a moment. The Queen nodded to Tarzar. "You found a good match there, I think. For all his play, he seems committed and loyal to you," she added.
"I am not sure if you'd like to tour the city, but I could do with something to drink whilst the hunters chase their prey. I have heard there is good tea here, would you be interested? Or do you have something else to attend to?"

xxx

Lalax took Yaritha's hand in her. "It is of no problem, my sweet. Alpsis was surprised by the request, but she is also gracious. Lead the way, my love!"
Lalax allowed herself to be led into the forests. Yaritha had supplied her with a cloak and hood along with gloves and a walking staff for keeping her balance in places with dense undergrowth.
After only a kilometre into the forest it seemed like all signs of the city were lost. Instead a vast domain of trees stretched before them in all directions. It was hauntingly still and quiet except for the occasional rustle of trees and birdsong. For Lalax it was quite overwhelming, and she stayed close to Yaritha so as not to get lost in the trees.

xxx

The Partuz waited for their riders. They were without saddles. As Elpsis approached hers, the eight eyes peered at her and it stretched out a foreleg to rub against her; a cautious welcoming sign. This was an older drone, her carapace marked by the occasional scar and healed injury from previous hunts.
"This is Sharp-Fang," Yara explained to Elpsis. "She's reliable, but can take a bit of time to bond with you. It's best if you don't try and micromanage her."
For Tarzar she petted another Partuz which seemed a bit more friendly. It moved forward and rubbed both forelegs down his front and exposed her fangs.
"This is Great-Leap, she's just been friendly, don't mind the fangs," she added. Spears and bows were provided to those who wished them.
Yara's own personal Partuz waited away from the others and the Vash leapt on without any preamble and it started to climb a tree. The Vash held on with her strong legs whilst looking back at the guests.

For those going on foot a male Vash would lead them, carrying some extra spears which he handed to Hazani and Xalda. In bad Basic he said gestured to them and smiled. "Throw."

They would head deeper into the forest. Those on Partuz would traverse through the great trees, whilst those on the ground would wind between them. Their target would be the deer like creatures which occupied these forests and were hunted for food, hides and antlers by the Vash.

Phylis Alince Phylis Alince

"Yes...I have," Shazora said, suddenly thoughtful. "A good consort...a good match." It wasn't love, but she was...content. In a way, she was happy it was not. She knew Tarzar had affection for her, that he wanted to impress her and went out of his way to make her smile. She hoped it was not love. It would result in him getting hurt on her account.

She pushed these thoughts far from her mind, focusing on the...Xio Queen before her. "No, I have no engagements. Your suggestion sounds pleasant to me," she said smoothly. "Do lead the way." Two Qadiri bodyguards followed her silently, doing their utmost to be unobtrusive, and vigilant.

xxx

The deep forests had to be as alien to Lalax as the caves of the Underealm had been to Yaritha. She'd found them claustophobic, lifeless and gloomy. In a way, she still did. But...ever since freeing herself from her chains, she'd discovered the hidden beauty of this foreboding realm.

"They're singing, listen," she said softly. "Hear that persistent, trilled song? That's the grey warbler." Very gently, she scooped Lalax up in her arms, cradling her. "It's really small, but it's pretty red eyes...like yours. And listen, the bellbird is saying hello to us," she said.

If Lalax concentrated, she would hear the rolling peals of a bell-like song. "If you want to tell a Vashyada you really like their singing, tell them they're like a bellbird." As Yaritha looked across the vast domain of trees and bushes, her eyes fell upon a shallow stream. "Look," she pointed a finger in its direction, "the water's clean. Would you like to...dip your toes in it?"

xxx

Elpsis approached the Partuz slowly, making no sudden movements. But also showing no sign of fear. "Hey, Sharp-Fang," she said softly. With little experience in speaking Prosabia, she had stuck with Basic. Hopefully the spider would not mind. "Everything alright, big girl?" As Sharp-Fang rubbed her leg, Elpsis slowly raised her flesh hand, and stretched it out so that the Partuz could sniff it, before gently petting her head. "Fancy a ride?" Then she spoke in very broken Prosabia. "Hunt." Slowly, she climbed on top of Sharp-Fang. She hoped the Partuz would not mind that one of her legs was made of metal. Some animals were understandably unnerved by that. Hell, some humans and elves were.

Approaching Great-Leap, Tarzar gave her a broad, genuine smile. "Hey, you jump big?" he spoke jovially in bad Basic, though he clearly had a better grasp of the language than Elpsis. "You great teeth, too. You and me hunt, sounds good? Make queenie happy, huh?" Then, because it was a Tarzar thing to do, he jumped on top of the big Partuz. Taking this as her cue, Great-Leap proved her name was not an idle boast by making a...large jump, forcing Tarzar to hold on tight! "Whoa, girl!"

Sahmara, Xalda and Hazani approached the forest on foot, accepting the proferred spears from the male Vash warrior. Xalda looked curious and fascinated as she regarded the great trees. "I haven't seen anything like this," she declared enthusiastically. "Maybe Dux-un, but the trees were not as big."
Hazani raised an eyebrow. "What brought you to that strange place?"
"A hunt with my dear friend Nadia," Xalda said, glancing at her. "You speak as if you have familiarity with it. May I enquire how?"
"I was there once, years ago," Hazani's expression hardened slightly. "With Firemane. Before mother fought them," she added.

The two rulers soon found themselves at the teahouse by the water which Shikoba and friends had recently been at. As they entered they were shown to a prime table.
However, already there at another table was Phylis Alince. The Jedi was drinking tea haphazardly whilst examining a datapad with some strange stone tablets displayed. As the two rulers entered, she looked up and got to her feet, almost knocking over her chair.
"Ah, hmm, your ladyships, welcome! This is a, hmm, very nice place. If you do have some time later I'd like to show something to you, Lady Jai Vahal. It, hmm, concerns an item found on Farzi."

xxx

Lalax let out a pleased little squeak when Yaritha picked her up. She appreciated her girlfriend could lift her up and carry her to safety if needed!
She listened to the birds. Birds were something which took some getting used to. The Underealm had some bat-like creatures which lived in the upper recesses of the stone chambers. Birds, however, there were none.
Their song was pretty though. "It is a very sweet sound. And though you might think it unduly slavish of me, I can see what they mean, for your voice and song to me is like these noble creatures!"
Lalax assented to being carried to the stream and put her feet in the clear, cool water. "There are few streams back home which still feel like this. Many have been dammed or polluted."
She happily splashed a little in the water, the silvery stream passing over her grey feet.
"This is a most wonderous place. There is so much like a living cave of ten thousand pillars stretching beyond sight."
A strange bird called, a rare one Yaritha might have seen only once or twice. It was known as the Golden Petal bird for its look and colour. It was genuinely thought a good omen.
"What's that one?" Lalax asked curiously.

xxx

Sharp-Fang seemed happy enough with Elpsis, though she did reach back with a leg and brush the metal touching her, as if wondering what it was. She turned and scuttled up a nearby tree. This would test Elpsis' ability to hold on and keep focused, but she'd likely have no problem with this given her experience.
Great-Leap seemed more enthusiastic, and with leaps and skittering soon had Tarzar up on a higher branch, running ahead of the others. The Qadiri's efforts to rein her in was...patchy....

Yara lead the way, completely casual, even when her Partuz was hanging upside down on a tree branch. She led the hunters on, hopping from tree to tree as they proceeded on.
Soon they left the area around the city, to the south rather than the east where Lalax and Yaritha had gone. Yara had a small earpiece and whispered into it, a concession because her guests could not see or might not understand the Vash's gestures.
"Narrak ahead," she whispered. "Elpsis, track north two trees. Tarzar, south three trees."
Elpsis would likely sense the Narrak, a deer-like creature, but broader, more like a giant wombat with horns. It was deceptively fast, and the horns were extremely dangerous against a humanoid.

The foot hunters would arrive slower, but their guide would usher them to a safe distance and insist they stay down so they would not be seen or easily detected by the creature.
"See. Wait," the Vash said in Basic.

Shazora's expression remained politely neutral when the human Jedi got visibly flustered. Her brown eyes darted towards the datapad for a moment. "Oh, I'm certainly interested. You've got quite the talent for making such discoveries. Later perhaps? The ancient history of my homeland is quite dear to my heart...as it is to all Farzians."

There was no hostility in her tone, but beneath the surface there was suspicion. Today it might just be one, admittedly apparently well-meaning and socially awkward, Jedi digging things up. Tomorrow it might be many more sky people. "You know, it's been such a long time since I was in Yastoida and this café didn't even exist back then! Is there a beverage you would recommend?"

xxx

Yaritha could not help feel pangs of sadness when Lalax mentioned how contaminated the streams of the Underealm. Once she would have seen it as a just punishment for the Xio's abuse of nature...but the mistresses were gone, and in any event it was the common Xio who suffered, just as the land itself. The heart of the Underealm and the spirits inside it were in pain.

Perhaps time, and good works could at least somewhat restore the Underealm to what it had been...before everything. But she could not help feel melancholy when she recalled the new divide between the city Vash and those in the forest. How long before the city folk would see Gaia's forest and rivers as just another resource to dominate and exploit? I hope Calana is not wrong, she thought.

However, then she heard a song she had not heard in a long time. She looked utterly astonished, then smiled. "That...that is a Golden Petal, if my eyes don't deceive me!" she declared excitedly. "I've...only seen one once in my whole life...until now. You can spend decades in Yarkul without having the honour. They're beloved by Gaia," she hugged Lalax from behind. "To see one so soon on your first journey...this is a good omen, love!"

And so the hunt was on.

Elpsis felt quite relieved that Sharp-Fang didn't take offence at having metal touch her skin. She held on while the Partuz smoothly climbed up the tree, clamping down on the urge to tighten her grip. It would only make the Partuz uncomfortable about her presence. She was there to guide. Guide and unwind. To...reconnect. After all the blathering, all the paperwork, all the stress. Before she had to return to it again, and do her duty.

It went without saying that Sharp-Fang hadn't been trained to follow commands in Basic and her Prosabia was too patchy for her to trust in it. So she reached out mentally, trying to connect with the mind of the Partuz. "See...those big..four-legs over there, with the horns? Drive them to the two-legs...then you can eat their meat," she tried to mentally communicate. She heard a quiet chitter, and Sharp-Fang skittered down a tree, charging towards her prey.

Meanwhile, Tarzar was holding on closely while Great-Leap made...a big leap after another. "Whoa, girl!" He laughed as he felt the wind slap his face, for despite the dizzying speed he was happy. He was accustomed to determined ladies, after all. Raising his voice, he let out a Farzian hunting call, then spoke in accented Prosabia, "Charge, big girl!"

Moving quietly, Sahmara, Hazani and Xalda followed the Vashyada guide, weapons in hand. They stayed low, and started to take up position behind the trees and bushes to avoid detection by their quarry.

And where was Shikoba, while all this transpired? Though the others might have lost sight of her, she was actually close be. To be precise, she was meditating, eyes closed, while hanging upside down a tree branch with her faithful Partuz White-Hide, who did not seem to mind.

Phylis peered at Shazora a bit closer, then nodded. "Ah, of course, hmm. History is my profession as much as Jedi. Hmmph, were it not for the Force I likely would have become a professor somewhere." One could imagine the Jedi Master turning into one of those reclusive, rather scruffy but incredibly knowledgeable about one topic academics.

"Ah, well, the 'Forest Meadow' is one I am especially fond of. Hmm, and the 'Wildflower Grove'. Hmmph, if you want my advice do not try the 'Silverdawn Mist', I find its taste to be rather queer." Phylis used the last word with no irony at all, not knowing or probably caring what other meanings that term might have.

Lia meanwhile smiled at the exchange, and when the waiter appeared she ordered the Forest Meadow.

The waiter smiled at Shazora. "And you, Lady?" he asked.

Lalax sensed the excitement in her lover's voice and smiled. She peered into the trees, hoping to catch a glimpse of this bird. The light combined with the trunks and branches was hard, and the hug she received – whilst welcome – was also distracting! However, she figured she caught a glimpse of a golden flutter of wings with the beautiful call again.

"I saw it!" she said excitedly. "The gold looked beautiful amidst the green and brown."

Suddenly, Lalax jerked upwards with a small cry, accidentally falling backwards on Calana. "My feet…something…." She peered into the water and saw a small fish had swum up and must have brushed against her foot.

"My pardon, love," she said in embarrassment. "I am…uhh…not prepared for so many animals living here," she added, kissing Yaritha's hand in apology.

Sharp-Fang returned an impression of hunger, and so she skittered down the tree and started to quickly advance across the ground towards the creatures.

Great-Leap needed no further urging, and loped across the ground, more jumping than running, unlike Sharp-Fang.

Yara too guided her Partuz down, taking up a position behind and between Elpsis and Tarzar. As she advanced, she let out the blast of a horn. It was the signal, and she let out a loud warcry as she rode forward. This would both alert the other hunters, and scare the Narrak.

Meanwhile, the grounded hunters would hear the call and hear the shouts and calls as well as the hooves of the Narrak being driven forward.

However, before they'd arrive, the hunters had a trick. At the urging of their Vash guides they'd strung rope tripwires tied to the sturdy trunks. Once the beasts had fallen – as was common for the top-heavy Narrak – or burst through they'd be easy prey to be attacked with bow or spear.

"Thank you for your advice," Shazora said politely. If she found the manner in which Phylis used the word 'queer', she gave no sign of doing so. A glance at the Vashyada waiter. "A Wildflower Grove, please, thank you."

"So...Mistress Jedi," Shazora began once the waiter had taken their orders have departed, "you've travelled far and wide. I hear you were interviewed about your book on Tygara recently - very interesting read, by the way. How much interest is there in events on our little blue planet?" A seemingly casual question to make idle conversation.

When Lalax jerked backward into Yaritha, her lover fell into the grass, with the Xio on top of her. On instinct she had wrapped her arms around Lalax. Once her mind caught up and she realised what the cause of her lover's panic had been, she laughed.

"Sorry, sorry," she said quickly, lest Lalax get upset. "I hope it's not...too much, right? Some beasts here are dangerous...but many aren't, and most predators will just avoid you unless you bother them or do something foolish," she hastened to reasure her.

Then she smiled a bit impishly. "You have to admit though, you can't fault the little fish for wanting to take a look. It's never seen grey feet, and yours are very pretty." It was impossibly corny, but maybe it would make Lalax laugh and cheer her up a bit.

The horn blasted loudly, and the hooves of the Narrak echoed like thunder. The large creatures smashed into the tripwire. Beasts fell, through some managed to burst through in the chaos. Taking advantage of this, the Partuz closed in. Great-Leap was the first to pounce. True to her name, she fell upon one of the Narrak that had been trapped and tried to bite her prey and inject her venom. With a loud Farzian war cry, Tarzar thrust at the beast with his spear.

Sharp-Fang, meanwhile, was less aggressive, though Elpsis felt her hunger keenly through the Force. Having quickly crawled up a tree from where she could surveil the game, the experienced Partuz hurled a web at a Narrak that had managed to push through the trap. "Good girl," Elpsis reached out through the Force to give her mount an impression of praise.

Quickly, she pulled an arrow from her quiver, and fit it onto the string of her bow. It was a bit awkward to keep her balance, but it seemed Sharp-Fang understood instinctively what her rider was trying to do, even without any words being spoken. Raising the bow, Elpsis let the Force take aim for her and loosed the arrow.

As the riders made their attack and chaos reigned, Hazani appeared amidst the trees. Heat spread through her body, and a small gust of flame burst from her hand. No grand firestorm or large fireball, but enough to distract, and panic. Taking advantage of this, Sahmara thrust her spear, wielded in both hands, towards the leg of the scared beast. Weaving a path through frightened, angry Narrak, Xalda leapt on top of a beast tripped by the ropes. As the beast tried to furiously knock her off, she jabbed her dagger under its jaw.

The waiter nodded, made a note and scurried away with the orders.

Phylis meanwhile, looked back to Shazora.

"Hmm, well, thank you! I do always feel like a bit of an impostor writing about these worlds, because no matter how much I learn, I will still not be a, hmm, native inhabitant. Hmmph, the interview was not widely seen, mainly in the very academic channels connected to the Jedi Order and such groups. As for outside interest?" Phylis regarded the Qadiri curiously. As socially awkward as she was, Phylis was extremely intelligent, and knew a lot about Tygara and its people. And though her experience with Shazora was much less, she could read into those words by considering the very real concerns most Tygarans had.

"Hmm, I think that is an interesting question," Phylis said, leaning back in her seat. "And it is one which has, hmm, several parts. On the macro level, Tygara is unknown to the vast majority of the galaxy. Few planets are notable enough to be known by many; Coruscant, Corellia, Naboo. There are a million known star systems out there, and even the most proficient hypographer knows few of them. Add to that, hmm, the galaxy is in another crisis of war, as two competing Sith factions not too far away from here. You needn't worry about them, however. Hmmph, the Sith and Galactic Alliance continue to fight and squabble, and that alone distracts them from out here."

"I think though you are more interested if, hmm, smaller players might be interested? Firemane's been dissolved, but the successor mercenary bands, the criminals, pirates and raiders out here on the rim? On that, the answer is likely yes…with a caveat. These people are predators; greedy, selfish and petty. They do not have the numbers to beset the planet directly I deem. However, they can prove a nuisance by attacking trade lanes, acting as mercenaries, being smugglers of people and goods. What they think they see if a 'backward' planet which is easy pickings. Firemane presented a unified and strong monopoly of force and so kept them away. Hmmph, to commit their own crimes. Regardless, it is important that in this new fractured reality that they be strongly, hmm, checked."

The tea arrived and Phylis realised that she'd rambled a bit. "Hmm, my apologies, Lady Jai Vahal. Perhaps that was a little long winded. In short; yes, the scavengers are always interested, but if deterred they will not pose a threat."

Lia took her tea and blew on the top to cool it before taking a sip. It was quite delicious and she nodded approval. She said nothing though about the wider discussion, but carefully listened to every word.

At first Lalax pouted a bit, but Yaritha's joke made her smile a little. She looked into the water, seeing the fish vanishing down the current.

She looked down and wiggled her slightly damp toes. "It would be a rare sight; I am glad it did not wish to try and nibble on me!" she added.

Turning, she gave Yaritha a kiss. "We should perhaps begin our trek once more. And, oh look!"

It seemed like Gaia was intent in unveiling all the creatures today. Crossing over the path not far away was a rodent of unusual size! It was perhaps a half metre long, with short brownish fur tending to gold underneath, a short snout and an almost comically suspicious look from the set of its eyes. It was a Rorvik, native to Yarkul, and used occasionally for fur and food when larger prey was not available.

XXX

Chaos swirled around the hunters as they tried to strike at their prey. Great-Leap's bite and Tarzar's spear soon brought down its quarry, the triumphant Partuz biting the creature in the neck again so she could feed on the blood inside. This was as she was trained to do.

At that moment Yara rode up and dropped down. She gave Tarzar a nod of professional respect for his skills, and then cut off the head of the fallen Narrak with her curved sword.

"We don't need the head apart from the horns, and we don't want her venom getting into the rest of the body, we can't eat it then," she explained.

Yara's Partuz came over to share the spilt blood and head with Great-Leap, who was likely unhappy at having to share…but would do so grudgingly!

Elpsis' target meanwhile received the web with great accuracy to the legs. The beast fell with a distressed lowing sound, a crack sounding as one of its legs broke. Elpsis' arrow arced straight and true into one of the beast's eyes, piercing deep and ending its suffering swiftly.

The unmounted hunters meanwhile struck, and soon accounted for several more of the beasts. Xalda's strike in particularly was effective at penetrating the brain and killing the Narrak quickly, though it thrashed a bit afterwards.

When it was done, the remaining Narrak fled into the forest. Five large beasts lay among the trees, a vast haul, but one which would need to be taken back to the city quickly.

Yara called in on her commlink whilst her attendants – and guests if they wished – prepared the hunt for transportation. She seemed quite pleased with her guest's prowess and even gave each of them a nod of recognition, high praise from the Vash warrior!

"When predators sense vulnerable prey, they strike," Shazora said thoughtfully, though she didn't look surprised by what Phylis had relayed to her. "We're one small world on the fringes, barely on the cusp of our own space. Easily ignored by the great sky-empires, but all too tempting for the carrion. All the while we have to contend with an expansionist threat closer to home."

A meaningful glance in Lia's direction. It was probably not rocket science for the Lady of Tlaxqui to figure out who Shazora meant. "And yet we must be prepared to meet these challenges. It's our responsibility as the 'liberators'. If it's left to future generations, the opportunity will have been squandered."

Yaritha looked in the direction, Lalax was pointing at, smiled. "That's a Rorvik, love. Don't mind the sour look on its face. They always look like that. Why don't you-" she stopped and looked up when she felt a raindrop on her cheek. The sky had darkened, and it was starting to rain. "Gaia has decided to grace you with Yarkul's other great natural wonder - rain," she said with a laugh. Her eyes darted towards some trees. "Come! See if we can find shelter over there in one of the trees!"

xxx

"Good girl, good girl," Elpsis cooed gently, lowering her bow. Sharp-Fang made a low hissing sound, and jumped down from the tree. Elpsis had to hold on. Quickly, the Partuz crossed the distance to her fallen prey. Elpsis gently petted Sharp-Fang. Perhaps sensing that her rider was not that experienced, the Partuz lowered herself a bit to allow her to dismount. Slowly, Elpsis got off her mount, wary of accidentally hurting her with her cybernetics.

With her...sharp teeth, Sharp-Fang bit into her quarry's neck and began to drink its blood. Elpsis wiped some sweat from her face, and lowered herself, checking the Narrak's pulse and the spot her arrow had struck. She was satisfied that the creature had died quickly. Then she began to chant softly, voice low.

"Spirits of the wilds, I give thanks for the life of this animal that feeds me. I promise to use all parts of it with respect and gratitude. May this act remind me that all life is connected, and of the cycle of life and death. I ask you to take its spirit home, and vow to unleash vengeance on those who kill animals for sport and pleasure."

Xalda approached her, nonchalantly wiping her bloody dagger. "You ride well, sister."
Elpsis snorted. "More like she knows her stuff, and I guess I know not to get in her way."
"The wise know what they do not know."
"You making fun of me?" Elpsis asked rhetorically, shaking her head. Her milky-white eyes darted across the five carcasses, the feasting Partuz and the hunters who were bringing in sleds. "Break was nice while it lasted. Come on, let's get them ready for transport."

"I like her!" Tarzar declared enthusiastically, giving Great-Leap a pat while the Partuz drank the spilt blood. "Sharing's caring, girl," he whisepered to her, perhaps noticing that she wasn't too thrilled about sharing with Yara's mount. "Does she have a regular rider?" he asked of 'his' Partuz. "Do these girls all have the same mother?" he asked curiously.

Phylis nodded. "Yes, that is so. As in nature, the carrion feeders rarely attack the strong and healthy unless desperate. They will single out the, hmm, weaker targets. Though Tygara is better armed than it was, their technology will still give them an edge provided they can choose the arena of battle."

The Jedi Master looked between the two. She understood to what they referred. "Hmmph, yes, though that threat has some weaknesses not many might see…." As far as conspiratorial as Phylis went, this was about it. Still, she finished her tea and rose. "I will leave you to your, hmm, discussions. I have to go see someone about getting some more crystals."

When the Jedi had gone, Lia sipped from her cup. "I wonder what she meant? Observant, that one, though not very good at being deceptive. As for your last point, I quite agree. If worst comes to worst, I have certain contingencies I can activate in the priestess queen's realm which might cause some delays. Still, I'd rather it not come to that, but we must be prepared in case it does."

As the rain started to fall, Lalax let herself be led to the hollow bole of a tree. The tree itself seemed to be quite healthy despite having a large crack inside it. Lalax had also never quite gotten used to the rain. It simply didn't exist in the Underealm, and many places the Xio went experienced quite dry or arid conditions. Still, it was not unpleasant to have a shower of rain, though it was prudent to take cover.

As she scrambled into the tight confine she found herself staring out at the silver curtains of rain. Lalax felt something crawl on her leg, and she suppressed a squeak as a large beetle wandered across her legs. It didn't seem dangerous, but it was scaly like some of ancient horror in miniature. Yaritha would recognise it as a harmless wood beetle, they had presumably disturbed its home.

"I did not expect to experience nature so close…I am glad you are here to explain it to me," she said. She was so rapt in her attention that she had not been looking outside at all.

The rain would start to fall on the hunters soon as well. At first only a few drops made it through the trees, but then with increasing strength.

"She does, yes," Yara replied to Tarzar. "A brave hunter named Ankal. He's injured though, I don't know when he'll be back, so she's spare. It does them good to be exercised." She pointed to her mount, Sharp-Fang and Great-Leap. "They are all sisters. Their mother is the local queen Long-Reach. But, we better get to work before the rain spoils the meat."

Yara seemed in her element. As each sled appeared she would help the attendants pull the dead beasts onto them. Tarzar put his mighty shoulders into the effort too, for the Narrak weighed several hundred kilograms as adults. Any of the guests who wished to assist would be welcomed too.

The sleds themselves were assisted by repulsorlift technology, and could carry three of the beasts at once. Then they could be piloted through the trees by a single driver each.

"Used to be a lot trickier," Yara said to Tarzar, grunting as she was hauling the fourth carcass onto the sled. "Partuz can't pull the sleds, they're not good at it, and Narraks won't pull their dead kin, so it used to be a lot of brute strength. Brute strength and hunting field butchery so we only could carry the best bits with us to lighten the load for the sled.

She stepped back, her strong frame covered in sweat and streaked with blood. "Not bad, for a Qadiri," she joked to Tarzar, who likely looked similar.

She whistled, and her Partuz reluctantly stopped its feast and skittered over. "Alright, let's get this last one on, and then we can head back. Want to get these into the hunting lodge as quick as possible so they can process the meat and fur whilst it's fresh." She looked around to see if anyone wanted to help. If they did, Yara would put them to work helping her pull the last hunt into place.

The rain had started to fall heavily, though not torrentially.

Shazora watched the Jedi leave. There was nothing untoward in her gaze. Unlike the despot who had once reigned supreme over Tygara from her sky-realm, she had no lecherous or amorous desires. Rather her gaze was thoughtful, assessing. "We must," she spoke softly once Lia had said her piece. How odd it felt, to be sitting in a café with a Xio. It could almost be normal tea time. They key word being almost.

"We've made our own preparations. Unpleasant ones, costly ones, but needs must," she paused to take a sip from her tea. It gave her a moment to think. "My time with Firemane is..not one I wish to look back on. There were compromises, many unpalatable. Indignities," she paused again, as if reliving something unpleasant. Or conveying the impression thereof. "Still. it gave me some insight. Of the humans, and our so-called 'older sisters'. They maintain an appearance of unity, and to be sure they all look down on us. But there are deep fissures in their lands."

xxx

Yaritha suppressed a laugh when she noticed Lalax' response to the little beetle. She had to remind herself that this was all strange and unusual to the Xio. It did not make her weak, far from it. It was just new, and new things were unnerving. "Don't mind the wood beetle," she said gently. "It just wasn't expecting guests and wanted to say hello." Placing a hand on Lalax' shoulder, she began to rub it in soothing circles. "Look outside, love. See the trees, how they move in the wind. Rainfalls are beautiful when you're not the one getting wet!"

xxx

Suffice to say Tarzar was far from averse to getting his hands dirty. His Lady was quite pleased with his physique and he worked hard to keep it in excellent conditions. So he put his much appreciated, strong shoulders to good use helping fill the sleds. Blood and sweat clung to his clothes, and his body. Nor was he unappreciative of a Vashyada warrior woman. "And you're not too bad either, Miss Vashyada Muscles," he said with a laugh. and tipped his cap to Yara.

It was not a torrent yet, but rain poured down from the sky. As raindrops fell upon her cheeks, Elpsis made herself useful hauling. Siobhan would have considered it beneath her, except when she thought it would make her look good. Tegaea would've considered it both beneath her, and been too pathetic and lazy to lift.

Elpsis was free of such snobbery. She had rolled up her sleeves, exposing the imposing metal of her skeletal cyber-arm. Where her body was still flesh, her muscles strained against her blood stained shirt, hauling up the dead beast. Xalda, Sahmara and Hazani had been pitching in as well or found other ways to help out.
