„Never can true reconcilement grow where wounds of deadly hate have pierced so deep..."
- John Milton, Paradise Lost

Come one morning, the Jedi would find, nailed to the entrance of the Jedi Order's Coruscant Temple, an edict. It was both a call to action for servants of the Light and a warning for those who followed the Dark. A digital copy soon found its way onto the holonet, photographed by an unknown source.

The edict, signed with the name Bernard of Arca, held the following words of condemnation:

The names below belong to heretics, liars, thieves, murderers, and traitors. Each one has turned from the Light and betrayed its grace.

Their lives are forfeit.

Should your name be written here, surrender yourself and be given the grace of mercy.

If you seek their redemption, find them before the Light does.

There will be peace, but not for them.

May their spirits find no rest in the world beyond.

In a distant tomb on Byss, a shade stirred. In a moment of reflection, he almost saw his children's faces. Their visage faded so long ago, forgotten memories blended into the thick, stale air, bitter like fuel ever-present to burn. Those images had set fire to a world and claimed countless lives afterward, each manipulation and piece moved ensuring the long conflict they inspired endured. He had given to all of it without hesitation or doubt.

The parchment message slowly faded, swallowed by the shadows in which it belonged.

Glade sat by a neon-lit window in her small, cluttered, dark apartment on Denon, listening to the patter of rain. Her slicer deck lit up like a life-day tree, signaling a message bouncing around the undernet from Fyor-Droid. It was probably Sickle or Chronicle playing tricks again. She pushed her tangled hair out of her eyes and put down her black stim caf long enough to take a peek.

At first, her brittle laughter held up as memories of swatting Siths drifted along, reminding her how young they all were. Then it kinda hurt, especially the last bit. She had hurt people—not lately, just corpos, though; they don't count, right? Maybe. But her mum, her kids, their reputation, her family. She closed her eyes, curled up in her chair into a ball, and pressed her fingers to the rainy glass, wondering what could have been.

"Jus' gotta roll along, keepin' your head on," she hummed. Eyes closed, she pressed a switch and blew out icy blue air, frosting the glass as she drifted off.

Betrayal of the Light. The Murder of Innocents. The Perversion of Life and the Force.

Inanna Harth Inanna Harth had told him that she'd gone undercover as a Sith. It must have been deep cover... or she hadn't really been undercover at all. Gatz was torn, sitting in his quarters at The Vonnuvi enclave. What his master had done in her past was her business, not his. She hadn't gone digging into his history, at least as far as he knew.

So... really, he had no right to ask after these accusations. He had no right to even know about them. He couldn't go delving into Inanna's sordid past, not behind her back nor in front of it.

But he couldn't exactly pretend he hadn't seen it either. With it posted publicly, she'd know he'd seen it. And he'd know that she knew that he'd seen it. And she'd know that he knew that she knew that he'd seen it. And—

With a sigh, Gatz tossed the datapad onto his bed.

"Fuck it, I'll crack a joke about it during our next training session," he told himself, "and let her tell me as much or as little as she likes."

That seemed the most sensible thing to do.

will you sink down to me?

"What?"

She was not surprised to find her name on such an edict, but hadn't expected Kai's—then she saw the dagger mark after it.

"Dead?"

The five stages of grief washed over her at once, acceptance internalized as guilt.

"Oh, Starfish..."

She had convinced herself that putting distance between them was the best thing for him, that'd it would protect him from Syreni's periodic outbursts while also allowing him to follow his dream of becoming a proper Jedi Knight despite an alchemized nature. She hadn't seen or heard from him in years, which was entirely her own fault, and now she wouldn't be able to rectify that. He had lost everything; so too had she.

Next to the datapad, her hand closed into a tight fist. The wood underneath cracked under an invisible pressure.

A'ight, Bernard Bernard of Arca, she thought. Bet.

She'd come to Coruscant, but not for redemption from the Jedi. She'd go to clear a debt once and for all.

"A long list. A very long list," one of his kin mused, her ethereal form twinkling with curiosity. "It was nailed to a rather large door," Came the amused reply of one who wore the visage of an ancient king in one moment, and a smiling businessman in the next.

Kal's attention, however, was drawn to a single line. A line repeated more than once.

"Theft of Jedi Artifacts? An excellent hobby!"

The conversation swiftly pivoted to the spirits showing off their favourite trinkets. The belligerent one's collection of blades broken on the battlefield was an interesting novelty, though Kal was partial to his own contribution - a septet of mummified Jedi. Nothing extraordinary on their own, but each had taught their predecessor. An unbroken line of collectible master-padawans.

He had a ninth, but the eight was proving annoyingly difficult to locate, despite the scrying rites indicating that the body remained intact.

Upon returning to the Temple from the city, Efret read the edict in-person. The fellow Jedi who had accompanied her did so as well, over Efret's shoulder. He read the whole list while she only got about halfway though before her attention was drawn to the nail that secured it to the wall. She was first to step away. As he looked up to her, she frowned and signed, <Door-#frame not bulletin-board.> Efret knit her brow. <He fix that, future?>

<You miss purpose, Master-Farr,> he replied as they passed through the entrance into the Temple.

<No, I-understand but he need respect this Temple before lose also.>

<Master-Farr!>

<Hope don't but possibility.>

<It little-hole.>

<Yes, but vandalism #is vandalism for Jedi, Sith, either.>

Thal paced up to the notice hung to the door, blinking a few times after he read it thoroughly.

He watched Efret Farr Efret Farr pass him, before he turned his head back to the notice.

Betrayal of the light.

He felt that every day he woke up. Anger, violence. Everything that he carried with him. He stopped when the Master walked by, catching up to her. Given his stature, it was just a few short steps.

"Does the Jedi Order really mark you for leaving the Order, just the simple act of leaving?"

Thal was close to falling- closer than he ever had been. Worry spread across his face at just the idea that the Jedi would hunt him down simply for not wanting to be a part of the Order, given the state of his mind and all.

"Does the Jedi Order really mark you for leaving the Order, just the simple act of leaving?"

"Of course we don't."

Jasper stepped away from the notice after examining it. There were some names on this list that certainly made sense. Others? It was rediculous. There were those on here who had left to discover themselves, and others who had walked back from the dark path who had paid for their crimes.

"Everyone has a right to leave," Jasper remarked. "What this is... isn't so simple. There are good people on this list that have done bad things in the past. The opposite is true as well. I imagine that... Bernard..." he winced a little at the name. The former Sentinel of Harmony... his own title. "...is at a point where he cannot see the difference. This is a list of his own convictions. We must see it for what it is and keep level heads."

But to call out those who had redeemed themselves as well? Did the lives that Inanna Harth Inanna Harth and Kahlil Noble Kahlil Noble helped save really mean nothing to this man? This former Jedi Councilmember? If such redemption was impossible...

Who was even innocent?

Perhaps that was not for any one person to answer.

Thal's eyes did not leave the notice, or the direction of it. He spared a glance at the other Jedi, one of the Councilmembers no less. Jasper Kai'el Jasper Kai'el found himself before Thal, who had placed his hands on his hips, just above his belt. A sure sign that the young man was deep in contemplation, and the turmoil around him swirled more than before.

"Master Noble- did he really sacrifice people? For them? For the Sith?"

Thal's voice broke for the first time in a long time. He seemed to be in disbelief at what he read- as if secrets came pouring forth, long-held knowledge that some Jedi were not the best people before. Even he, a Gladiator, a vicious combatant killed to survive.

But he did not do it willingly, and not without grief of his own, weight.

"For a ritual?"

Thal's words only had a few seconds between them, as if comprehending the evil that one did before more slowly than before. The slow realization that the people over him were not Saints was both a comfort, and discomforting at the same time.

"He speaks of them like Heretics, the man who posted this."

"Master Noble- did he really sacrifice people? For them? For the Sith?"

"When he was young," Jasper stated bluntly. "When you're born the son of the Sith Lord and forced to survive, it's easy to do terrible things. It is a life Master Noble has not lived in a very long time. It is not easy for people that have been concieved from the Sith to walk away with clean hands... not when the alternative is death or worse. Not all of us have the privilege of being born in the light."

Worse being twisted into something beyond recognition.

"Perhaps he sees them as heretics," he shrugged. "It's... hard to say what he believes. I've never met him, and I don't know what he's seen or had to do. We shouldn't ignore this list, but it shouldn't be taken at face value either. Zealousy is just as blinding as rage."

It was best they avoided these things and approached whatever this was with objective truth in mind. But given the gravity of the name on the list, Jasper imagined such a thing would not be so simple.

Braze followed his master Jasper Kai'el Jasper Kai'el closely, observing his daily tasks while silently viewing an image on a small data pad connected to the holonet. The display showed Bernard of Arca's proclamation, a list of fallen Jedi condemned for their crimes.

"Bernard of Arca..." Braze murmured, committing the name to memory and pondering its significance. Did Bernard see himself as judge, jury, and executioner? It seemed he overlooked crucial details, adopting an all-or-nothing approach that felt disturbingly Sith-like.

Braze's thoughts wandered as he considered the implications. Was Bernard's rigid stance a result of his own pain and suffering? He wondered about the man's past, the experiences that had shaped his uncompromising perspective.

"Do you think someone hurt him?" Braze asked, glancing at Jasper. "Who do you think it was?" His voice was tinged with curiosity, seeking to understand the deeper motivations behind Bernard's actions.

Her companion was the one to notice that someone was speaking to her and politely pointed it out before excusing himself. He was beginning to run late for another commitment.

By the time Efret had switched on her interpretation unit and looked over, she had missed half of Thal's question.

She was trying to fill in the context when Jasper replied. In a way, she was relieved that he had answered; in another, she was a bit further jarred. She hadn't known the story about Master Noble's dark past. In large part, it didn't matter—not to her anyway though it clearly mattered to this Bernard—but she did appreciate now knowing.

Thal stood eerily still when Jasper remarked about not being born in the light. For Thal, he did not see an actual sunlight until he was 19 years old.

After he strangled a man to death to escape. He flicked his eyes over to the Jedi Knight, a twinge of anger resonating in the force.

“I don’t believe that one’s birth determines their actions. I have been at the mercy of men simply doing what they thought was best and correct. I wonder if their penance will ever undo their wickedness done to others.”

What Thal really meant, was that he had not fully forgiven those who wronged him through his formative years. He was careful not to fully reveal his hand and intentions- a sure fire way to end up out of the temple, or worse.

Lectured.

He didn’t say anything else, his arms crossed defensively. His father used to do the same, albeit when angry. Thal was conflicted, more so than he had been just a few minutes ago. Something didn’t sit right with him about the whole affair. Was forgiveness really warranted for everything? Was penance really enough for some crimes? Or were some things unforgivable- some acts beyond redemption?

Balun Vale sat within the quarters granted to him by Julius Sedaire Julius Sedaire ; his elbows were pressed against his knees, and his full attention was as if entranced by the document that had disturbed his rest. This list of wanted persons had seemingly originated from other Jedi, yet to speak so aggressively and claim the lives of other living beings as forfeit...-That was not the Jedi he had known while growing up in the Temple.

The fact that he had left the New Jedi Order and somehow hadn't found his own name on this list was a great relief; however, reading that Nouqai Veil Nouqai Veil was noted as one of the many priority targets concerned him immensely. Yes, she had turned from the Lightside of the Force but was still his best friend. Balun felt he was responsible for ensuring she didn't wind up in this kind of trouble, yet here it was in the astonishingly public transcript.

"Chit Nouqai....-We're in it deep now", he muttered under his breath, knowing full well that he wouldn't willingly allow anyone to take her life were he there to keep her safe. He had, of course, imagined having to fight her and whoever her Sith friends were if she refused to listen to reason, but the idea of her being killed wasn't something he could stand by. Deep down somewhere, she was still a good person buried beneath the darkness that had enthralled her.

As for these supposed Jedi? It all sounded like some bad joke, Sith acting under the guise of the Jedi mantle. It made him sick to think of it, so he turned off the datapad and tossed it onto his bed, soon moving for the door to his room in search of his Master.
