Private A New Era for New Cov

A new start.

That's what was happening. A transition is soon to take place on my precious home and I needed to consult the Force Wizards--or Jedi that housed their Temple deep in the jungle before this news was to be made public. And my only contact for that is not always available. Still, I am glad for when she is.

I send her an invitation to my office at NCBC Headquarters. With Ilic still under reconstruction, I had half a mind to invite her to my Family's Estate in Nogero City. But that would be too much back and forth that wasn't necessary. And besides, I was made aware that she too helped against the attack. So there was no need for me to hide the extent of the damage.

Now I wait for her, with refreshments prepared at the side table. I stand at my window overlooking the city. The sunlight filters through the dome in such a lovely way, and that brings me hope that I and the Board of Directors have made the right decision.

Valery stepped through the entrance of the NCBC Headquarters, her gaze sweeping across the polished interiors before settling on the assistant waiting to guide her up. She offered a polite nod and followed, her steps purposeful but light. Despite the weight of recent events, there was an undercurrent of calm and determination about her — a testament to her resilience and her role as a Jedi.

When the office doors slid open, Valery paused, taking in the view of Ilic and the figure standing by the window. A warm smile spread across her lips as she approached, hands clasped loosely in front of her.

"Liin," she greeted softly, the name carrying a sense of familiarity. "Thank you for inviting me. It's good to see you again." Her gaze briefly shifted to the sunlight filtering through the dome, and she nodded appreciatively. "New Cov's beauty always amazes me, even after everything that's happened."

She glanced at the refreshments set out, but her focus returned quickly to Liin. "You mentioned needing to discuss something important. What's on your mind?" she asked gently, her voice steady but laced with genuine curiosity and concern.

There aren't many that call me by name. Most use titles as they are expected to do when addressing one in my position. However Valery was a different sort. And her lack of formality wasn't due to any disrespect. More than likely she found it to be the opposite, which was why I hold no ill will towards her for it.

I turn from the window, pivoting on my heel as I move to greet her. "Thank you for coming. It's lovely to see you too." She touches on the tragic event and I cannot help but feel my smile falter a little. Such an event still struck me at my core, however I was doing my best to work through it.

I can see the worry written on her face as she posed her question. I end my approach in front of her, not even thinking to ask her to sit down. That could happen after I have given her the news.

"It is in light of what happened that compelled me to reach out to you today. Although I am assured by multiple affiliations that such an attack will not happen again; no plan is ever fool proof. So the Board of Directors and I have come to a decision. One in which will bring about a rather large change for New Cov. As you may well know, NCBC has run New Cov for centuries. We are a corporate, yet democratic government. But that will soon change. NCBC will soon seperate itself from New Cov's government. The Covie will get a chance to choose their new leader and I will not be putting my hat into the ring. I will still be the Director of NCBC and working with our affiliates. I cannot in good conscience lead a planet if my time here will not always be constant." I give her a moment to process what I had said. In no way was I suggesting to her that she put her name in to take my place. Oh no! More than likely the mayors of each domed city will put their names in for the leadership campaign. "None of this has been made public yet, so I implore you to keep it between us until that time. Now, in light of that NCBC will be constructing a new domed city. I know that you have a Temple safely tucked away in secret in the jungle. I do not ask to be told of it's location. I only need to know which direction from Ilic that the Temple sits, so that I can ensure that the new dome will not be near it."

There are details that I have left out, of course neither of which pose a threat to her Temple as far as I can tell. I have never been there, nor do I wish to in case I was compromised in some way. I have worked every deal that I could to ensure the safety of New Cov, and I will not let the Covie down.

Valery listened intently as Liin spoke, her expression shifting from curiosity to understanding as the enormity of what Liin was sharing sank in. When she finished, Valery let the silence linger for a moment, offering a respectful nod.

"That's… quite the change," she began softly, her gaze searching Liin's for a moment, as if trying to grasp the full extent of the impact this would have on New Cov. "Separating NCBC from New Cov's government is a bold move, but I can see why it's necessary given recent events. It's admirable that you want to allow the people to choose a new leader and focus your efforts where you can be most effective."

A choice Valery respected, as a leader.

Valery's gaze shifted briefly to the view outside before returning to Liin's. "You have my word that I won't speak of this until it's made public. But I do appreciate your consideration for the Temple's location." She paused, her brow furrowing slightly in thought. "Our enclave is positioned west of Ilic, nestled deep within the jungle. But don't worry — even if you know the direction, it's hard to find."

Valery offered a small, reassuring smile then, sensing the weight of the decision Liin had to make. "If there's anything I can do to support this transition — whether it's providing additional security, mediating discussions, or simply being present as a Jedi — please don't hesitate to ask. You've made difficult decisions for the benefit of your people, and I want to ensure this transition is as smooth as possible."

Quite the change, indeed. I assume that I will be travelling more. So it made sense for me to hand over the reigns to someone else. NCBC is New Cov, regardless of the new future planned as we consolidate with another major corporation. I will always put New Cov first. Still, I knew that I cannot always be present, so it is only fair that someone else is in charge.

"Thank you for your promise. And despite your Temple being hidden, as you say; there will be more harvesting done besides just the construction of a new domed city. The more space we have, the better. So we shall look into the southern hemisphere."

As for the rest of her words, I give her a respectful nod. I hardly feel the weight removed from my shoulders, yet I am sure that will come in time. "Once the public is made aware and campaigns begin, there could be some that may try to disrupt it. That happens in democratic societies, does it not? In all of your travels, has the other governmental systems that are democratic been that much different from what the Covie now have?"

Valery listened carefully, nodding in acknowledgment of Liin's thoughtful approach to managing the transition and ensuring New Cov's continued growth. She admired Liin's decision to focus on what was best for her people, even as it meant stepping back from direct leadership.

"You've made the right call," Valery said softly. "Ensuring New Cov thrives while also recognizing the need for a new leader is a wise decision."

When Liin mentioned disruptions, Valery's expression became more serious. "Democratic transitions can indeed bring unrest. I've seen it on other worlds — people can become divided, and there are always those who try to disrupt change for personal gain."

She took a moment to reflect, her mind tracing back to other systems she had encountered. "But it's through transparency and vigilance that you can guide the transition smoothly. If there's any indication that tensions might rise, I can assist in keeping the peace or mediating between any opposing groups. It's important to ensure that the people's voices are heard and respected."

Valery smiled gently, "In the end, the strength of a democratic society lies in its ability to adapt and move forward, even through challenging times. New Cov will find its way, and I'll be here to help ensure that."

I listen intently to Valery's insight. Afterall she has done a lot more travelling than I have. I'll bet that she's visited oceans, deserts and mountains full of snow; all things that were the things of make believe for those that haven't left New Cov. I have travelled a little, yet it is mostly to large stations or asteroids. And even once I was on Coruscant to catch a glimpse of the Senate Hall. It was quite chaotic in there and voices like mine wouldn't be heard.

"It is that division that I am seeking to avoid. Our Board of Directors is in itself democratic, so the entire concept is not a foreign one. And keeping myself out of the running will hopefully eliminate most of that division. My duties for New Cov will lessen somewhat, however all of my other duties will only be for the benefit of New Cov. I have secured various levels of protection from multiple sources. What happened here in Ilic should not happen again." At least not during my lifetime. And if it did, then there was plenty of defensive forces to fight back with. I have secured those too.

"Thank you for your support. Shall we celebrate with a drink? I have plenty of different options on the table, as well as some delicious refreshments."

Valery's smile softened as she listened to Liin speak, understanding the weight of her decisions and the care she had put into them. It was clear that Liin had thought of every detail — from the transition of leadership to the protection of New Cov. Valery admired that level of foresight, especially knowing how unpredictable political shifts could be.

"You've done everything right, Liin," Valery replied warmly, "I'm glad the future of New Cov is going this way."

She paused for a moment, her gaze flicking over to the drinks and refreshments that had been mentioned. A light chuckle escaped her lips, and she gave Liin a playful look. "I think a celebration is in order," she said, her tone warm and relaxed. "A toast to New Cov's bright future, and to the path you've laid out for it."

Valery reached for a glass, her smile growing as she raised it in Liin's direction. "To peace, progress, and the strength to navigate whatever comes next." With that, she waited to clink it against Liin's glass.

I certainly hope that I've done everything right. While some of my methods may be questionable in recent months; they've all served to benefit and protect New Cov. We are a singular planet unlike all others in the Galaxy.

At least what needed to be said was done. I approach the side table and wrap my fingers around the stem of a glass of light wine. Valery made her own drink of choice and it was after she did so that I raised my own for the toast. "For the prosperity and protection of New Cov." I meet my glass with hers, allowing for the soft clink as the two hard yet delicate surfaces meet before raising it to my lips for a sip.

After swallowing it down I was silent for a moment while my thoughts briefly drifted. "Has the Sith that attempted to conquer New Cov done the same elsewhere?" Not exactly light conversation, I know. But if I am to return the abducted Covie, I needed to have some insight onto his whereabouts.

Valery's expression shifted slightly at Liin's question, her brow furrowing just enough to show that the topic had drawn her into more serious territory. She took another small sip of her drink before lowering the glass and meeting Liin's gaze.

"No, I haven't heard or seen anything from that Sith since the attack on New Cov," Valery admitted, her voice steady but thoughtful. "There have been rumors of Sith activity in other parts of the galaxy, as always, but nothing has been directly tied to him. That doesn't mean he's not out there, though. Sith often work in the shadows, biding their time before making their next move."

She paused, considering her words carefully. "It's possible he's regrouping or focusing on something else for now, but we should remain vigilant. I'll keep my eyes and ears open, and if anything surfaces about his whereabouts or plans, I'll make sure you're the first to know."

Valery gave Liin a reassuring smile, wanting to ease the tension that had crept into the conversation. "But for now, I think we've done everything we can to ensure New Cov is protected. You've made sure of that."

After taking another sip, Valery hummed in thought, "All this work aside, do you have anything that keeps you busy off-duty?" Valery asked with a smile, "Any hobbies?"

In some ways it's good to know that he's not around. But in other aspects it has me worried. If Nefaron is regrouping, is he coming back to try to conquer New Cov again? My contacts on the darker side of things are keeping an eye out for me; being my spies and informants, as it were. But also they are there to prevent Nefaron from even executing those plans. Still, I do wonder if he'd have any thoughts of exacting revenge on me for not surrendering to him.

I give her a gentle smile as she believes that we've done everything that we can to protect New Cov. And we have! No plan is ever foolproof, I am aware. There'll always be the unexpected that come up. But at least we've managed to do everything that we can think of.

At the question of hobbies, I loft a brow ever so slightly. She is the second to have asked me such a question, the first being Judah Dashiell Judah Dashiell . "I am always on duty. It is what is expected of one in my position. Except perhaps when I am asleep. I enjoy my work. Exploring new ways of using biomolecules is always exciting for me. Do you have hobbies?"

Valery smiled softly at Liin's response, noting the subtle mix of pride and concern in her words. She understood the weight of leadership, especially when the safety of one's people was constantly at risk. "You're doing everything you can, and that's all anyone can ask. I'll keep monitoring things as well, just in case."

At the mention of hobbies, or lack thereof, Valery chuckled, her expression lightening. "I suppose I'm the same — always on duty, especially with young children at home. But when I do get some time, I enjoy training, reading, and teaching." A little bit of singing, too, but she didn't really share that side of her with strangers.

Just her family knew, and perhaps a few friends who had caught her singing.

She paused for a moment before adding playfully, "Although, sometimes, my 'hobby' feels like trying to keep my kids from causing too much chaos." With a grin, she raised a hand through her hair and focused on Liin again, "Finding things to enjoy outside of work can be important, though."

"You really have never been excited about anything else?"

I give her a nod as she mentions children taking up her time. I have never had any of my own, nor have I been courted by a gentleman yet, nor have I ever been married; so the prospect of children and everything that comes with them is not known to me. I do not have any siblings, nor was I around children outside of my classmates while growing up. I do remember some being troublesome for the instructors, however.

I do not touch onto that subject, for really it is no one's business but my own. Unless of course I was innconversation with my parents.

However it is the latter subject that I do respond to. "I cannot say that there is much for me outside of work. I did dabble in the arts a touch when I was younger. Yet that was when I had spare moments of free time as the youth often have. I do not regret the path laid out before me. I tread it willingly."

Valery listened carefully, noting the subtle shift in Liin's tone when discussing her path. It was one of quiet acceptance but also a sense of detachment from the simple joys that could come from a life outside of duty. She offered a warm, understanding smile.

"There's something admirable about dedicating yourself so fully to your path," Valery said gently. "But I think sometimes it's easy for people like us to forget that it's okay to explore new things, even if it's just in small ways."

She paused, her expression thoughtful. "The arts you mentioned... do you ever think about picking that up again? Even just as a way to unwind?" There was no judgment in her question, just the suggestion that balance might be important, even for someone so deeply entrenched in duty.

With a chuckle, she added, "Maybe even just trying something new for the fun of it could be good. I've been trying to do more of that myself. It's not always easy, though."

Her gaze softened again, reflecting her own understanding of the demands they both faced.

I cannot quite grasp the cpncept of exploring new things outside of work. Every waking hour is useful for work. My only spare moments were for sleeping. Even right now my focus has been on duty. I had brought Valery here for a meeting on New Cov and NCBC's future. The meeting is more or less finished, but my work is not. Sometimes social portions of the meeting needed to be played out, either before the meeting or afterwards.

"Perhaps when there comes a time for my retirement, I might pick up painting again. My work and exploring new ideas and concepts is extremely fun for me. The euphoria that I get watching the biomolecule experiments come to fruition is quite exhilirating. Does not everyone get that through their work?"

I would expect that they do. But perhaps not all tasks are fun. For example; going to war was not fun work. Neither that of working in a morgue. However some people are sure to find a little joy in what they do, surely. At least that is what I expect.

Valery smiled softly as she listened to Liin's response, appreciating the dedication and passion she had for her work. "It's great that your work brings you so much joy and fulfillment," Valery said warmly. "But I think not everyone gets that same thrill from their duties. For some, work can feel like an obligation rather than a passion. A way to pay the bills. You're fortunate to find excitement in it." Valery was in the same boat, and she wouldn't trade it for anything.

Others were less fortunate.

She paused, considering Liin's earlier words. "Retirement might give you the chance to explore painting again, but maybe there's room now, even if it's just small moments. I think you deserve that balance, too."

Her gaze softened, reflecting her own understanding of the balance between duty and personal fulfillment. "I've come to learn that a little time for myself helps me become better at what I do. Maybe it could be the same for you."

For me, my work was an obligation, yet one that I was highly devoted to. I could not easily be swept up by any other organization. Oh no! I am dedicated to New Cov and our precious industry.

In regards to finding small moments to paint, the very idea of taking a break from my duties nearly frightens me. Surely if I was to take a break, my workload would begin to pile up. How many meetings would need to be rescheduled? How many projects could be pushed further back from experimentation and production because I wanted to take a break? No, such an idea was a very selfish one.

But I couldn't let her know that I felt that way. Instead I simply smiled. "Perhaps. One may never know." I have a sip of my wine in a search for something to change the subject with. Surely there had to be something.

Aha! Her outfit! What a perfect idea!

"Your outfit is lovely. May I ask who is your tailor?"

Valery's smirk deepened when she caught Liin's subtle attempt to steer the conversation in a new direction. She leaned back slightly and responded with an amused glint in her eyes. "A Jedi tailor at the Temple makes most of my outfits. They're excellent at crafting functional gear but always throw in a stylish touch when needed."

After a brief pause, Valery's smile grew playful. "But you know what? Why don't we head into the city for lunch or maybe try something fun? A change of pace could be just what we both need."

She crossed her arms lightly, the suggestion carrying a gentle warmth. "It'll be a chance to get to know each other better, and for you, a little break could be interesting. I promise no one will suffer from an hour or two of relaxation."

Tilting her head slightly, Valery locked eyes with Liin. "What do you say?" The invitation lingered in the air, filled with genuine excitement.

All of my tailors are here on New Cov. However Matsu Ike Matsu Ike did make me a rather functioning dress. I do wear it when the occasion calls for it.

And just as I was about to express as much, Miss Noble pulls a sly move and reverses the subject back towards the idea of me taking a break. She sure is persistant, or another way to put it is that she is perhaps equally as stubborn as I am.

I go over my schedule quickly in my mind as I have another sip of my wine. An hour or two? There could be a way that I could still have it serve a business purpous. Or at the very least it could pretend to. A business luncheon is a perfect idea.

"A lunch would be suitable, I believe. There is one down the block from here. Would that suffice?"

Valery's smile grew into a warm, satisfied grin as Liin agreed to the lunch. "Excellent," she said, her tone carrying a hint of excitement. With a gentle gesture, she motioned toward the door and began leading the way into the vibrant, domed city beyond.

As they stepped out, Valery took in the scenery, appreciating the city's unique architecture and the hum of activity around them. The clear dome above filtered in natural light, casting a gentle glow over the streets, bustling with life and lined with vendors, shops, and greenery—a perfect blend of nature and technology.

Turning to Liin with a smile, she spoke, her voice lighthearted. "You know, I don't get to enjoy places like this as often as I'd like. It's a nice change of pace." She paused, giving her companion a curious look. "I'm also curious — what's your favorite dish here? I'd love to try something new."

As they continued walking, Valery allowed herself to relax, genuinely looking forward to this chance to unwind and get to know Liin on a more personal level.
