It’s been a slow process since Ko has started. He was patient and didn’t want to rush this. Fearing that it could possibly cause more harm than good if he cut corners. He wanted to do things right. For him simple cybernetics wouldn’t work. Most were tailored to humans and near-humans. The more alien a patient was, the harder it could become. Cybernetics also possessed a few vulnerabilities that he wouldn’t wanna deal with. So Ko chose the much slower process of commissioning cloned replacements for himself.

The actual operation was an entirely new beast. The surgery to implant the new eyes had to be performed within an isolated gas chamber. Otherwise the oxygen rich air could harm his sensitive ocular tissue during the process. Ko’s physiology seemed to compound an already delicate procedure. Demanding much more planning and forethought. Needing to ship Dorin Gas, requiring a safe environment, and a surgeon skilled in Kel Dor biology and neuroscience. Who knew how to make sure that everything was properly connected to a Kel Dor’s optical cortex.

Many of the difficulties could have likely been avoided if he’d had the procedure done on Dorin. But Ko instead felt it best to stay within the Core and on Coruscant. Where he could receive the aid of his peers. Ko knew that Jedi healers would prove crucial to his recovery. Only through blending the medical achievements of modern medicine along with the comforting aid of his friend through The Force did Ko believe that it would be a success and avoid complications and his body's rejection of foreign sensory organs invading his hollow sockets.

. . .

Now Ko was in the final stretch of his recovery. He simply laid in a hospital without his antiox mask or goggles. He felt groggy and his senses were irritated from how bright everything seemed as he finally began to wake up. As now he could finally begin to see light after so long. Slowly his eyelids began to open to reveal his silvery grey eyes. It felt both familiar and exotic at the same time. Everything was hazy and blurry. Both from drugs he was under as well as his new eyes simple lack of focus. Likely needing some time to be able to see clearly once more. He couldn’t yet tell if anyone else was in the room with him right now.

Braze had made sure to be here for Ko today. He stood in the small, sterile recovery room, a mask still covering the lower half of his face from the gas chamber. His fingers fidgeted with a neatly wrapped package, shifting it from hand to hand as he watched Ko's medical monitors beep in a steady rhythm.

Any second now.

Ko stirred. Braze leaned forward, eager, barely containing his grin.

"Hey, Ko," he said, voice dripping with mischief. "Quick question—if you had to fight one horse-sized duck or a hundred duck-sized horses, which one would you pick?"

He waited, watching Ko's anesthetized brain struggle to process.

Jonyna had been...very busy lately. Too busy, some would argue.

Still, she couldn't forget her son. Her first son. Her first padawan. The one she had begged and pleaded to be her padawan, and the one she was proud of more than anything.

She couldn't be there for him. Too much paperwork, too many things to do.

A nurse came in, looking to Ko with a smile. "You've gotten a present from a..." She paused, looking at the card. "Joe Knee Nah See?"

The nurse blushed, offering a bouquet of flowers, placing it at Ko's bedside. Purple Hyasinths, Yellow Zinnias, with a single variegated Tulip at the center, wrapped in a ring of Moss.

On the card, Jonyna had written (To the best of her ability), a small note.

"Hey kiddo. Out on assignment, dealing with some clean up after the invasion. See you when I can, happy to hear you'll see me. Kisses, Mom."

With a wary expression Ko’s eyes glanced over to where Braze was looming over him. The teen’s question going into one ear and out the other. Not sentient enough to answer the question. “Um… uh… I don’t think I’ve had a duck before… And I didn’t use horses in the agricorp.” Ko mumbled in a tired tone. His voice sounded far more clear without the antiox mask in the way. Allowing Braze to once again hear his ‘real’ voice.

The Kel Dor also completely misunderstood what the question was that Braze asked. Hearing farm animals had his mind return to memories of his previous work. Ko also took note of the bouquet. Able to make out colorful mass but not any of the details. ‘Jo-ne Na-se’ wasn’t a name he could recall at the moment. But he also couldn’t recall much of anything right now. Slowly a clawed hand of his reached up to grab the note. Tragically though his eyesight was still too blurry to read it. He's need to look over it again later when his world could clear up.

Looking back up at Braze, Ko squinted his eyes some. He couldn’t really make out their features with how blurry they were and the breath mask. “Sorry Lily, but it might be a bit before I can spar again…” The Kel Dor slurred. Mistaking who was in the room with him right now. Thinking he was talking to Lily Decoria Lily Decoria instead. Confusing one snowy individual for another.

"Oh wow... these must be bad,"
Braze mused with an exaggerated sigh. "I'm not Lily—I'm Braze. Have you already forgotten me so easily? And here I came bearing gifts!" He clutched his chest in mock heartbreak before offering Ko the small, carefully wrapped package.

"I figured these might help when you start adjusting," he added, his voice gentler now.

Maybe Loomi Loomi would stop by, or even Jalen Kai'el Jalen Kai'el , to check up on Ko.

Braze suddenly straightened up, a grin spreading across his face. "Oh! I grew a whooooooole two inches. That should be worth celebrating, right?"

Ko offered Braze a confused expression. Not sure what the teen meant about them being bad. “Oh Braze… Sorry it’s hard to see still. You look pretty similar right now from what I can remember." As Ko was given the gift he wondered for a moment what it was. But once he made contact with it he could decipher it from tactile feedback. Since losing his eyes, seeing through The Force was now instinctual. It also helped when he made physical contact with things.

The Kel Dor chuckled softly. “Glasses? I’ve never worn glasses before. Only my goggles. I wonder if I can wear it over them.” Ko remarked as he set the package aside. They could help with how bright everything was.

“Two inches? Sounds like you must be putting on some mass now. I guess it’s been a while hasn’t it. It’ll be exciting to actually see what else has changed.” For all Ko knew, the temple could have a new coat of paint and he wouldn’t have been able to tell. It would be wonderful to be able to read and watch things again like he used to. That had really been one of the most difficult things to loose with his eyes.

"They're kind of like glasses," Braze explained "But, y'know, tinted. They should be like goggles. Figured your eyes might be sensitive to the sunlight—like when you leave the eye doctor, but probably worse."

He hesitated, then glanced at the flowers nearby. "You got some flowers," he noted,

"A lot's changed since you could see," he added, his voice softer this time.

After a beat, he shifted his weight, offering, "If you're hungry or anything, I can grab you a meal. Or a drink. Whatever you need."

"If you're hungry or anything, I can grab you a meal. Or a drink. Whatever you need."

"It's okay, I brought some things."

Loomi made her way in, a gas mask snug on her face as she did so. Clutched in her hands was a box filled with pastries, which Ko would be able to actually eat in here. Baked by her, of course. In the other was a teapot, piping hot for her friend.

"Hi, Ko!" Loomi chirped. "How are you feeling? Do you see yet? I think I heard that your vision would be fuzzy for a little bit."

“Oh… so kinda like, uh, sunglasses? Funny thing is that even with good eyesight, us Kel Dor are still blind in other atmospheres without our goggles. Not just because of the air burning us.” Ko recalled, wondering if that might also be why his eyesight was so fuzzy here. Even if the room was climate controlled to mimic his home world. “I'll be able to see how scratched up my lightsaber hilt looks. I know it’s been damaged, but I can only really feel it. Perhaps I can finally fix it up properly.” A desire that Ko figured Braze could understand.

Ko then shifted his glance over to Loomi as she entered the room and made herself known. Bringing with her… something. He couldn’t quite tell what it was. “Hey Looms, I can’t make out many details right now. I’m still a bit sore too. But I’m certain our wonderful healers in the order have helped in the recovery.” Ko understood that it aided in making his optical nerves more agreeable to being attached to new sensory organs.

“What did you bring with you?”

"Yeah, they form a seal. Once you put them on, they'll suction into place, adapting to any atmosphere. No leaks, no shifting, no interference. They're built to protect your eyes completely, no matter where you are."
Braze offered lightly He was happy that his friend was perhaps going to see again. Braze didn't like the darkness of blindness. it was un comfortable and he could only imagine what being unable to turn that off was like...

"Hey Loomi. welcome to the party. What diiiid you bring?"

CORUSCANT

Medicine.

Long before sentient species emerged, life itself had fought to overcome nature's trials.

Adaptation. Survival. Evolution.

Before the modern era, medicine had been an act of trial and error—a game of experimentation. This plant was poisonous, but a similar-looking one held healing properties.

Then, as civilizations advanced, so did their understanding.

Sanitation. Surgery. Medication. Organ transplants.

All of it—a war against nature's inevitability. Against death itself.

And now, here Drystan was—watching what could be considered the apex of modern medicine.

A hospital on Coruscant.

Doctors moved swiftly, precisely, their expertise on full display. Despite the nervous glances cast his way—a Knight of the Order pacing the halls—Drystan wasn't here as a patient.

He was here to learn.

Every incision. Every stitch. Every technique. Committed to memory.

Already, he had observed a doctor stabilize a failing heart. Another administering CPR, bringing life back from the brink.

In another wing, he watched as a physician treated a broken leg with splints and braces, another closing a wound with stitches, and another setting a shattered arm in bandages and a cast.

Each skill—battlefield knowledge. For himself. For his allies.

Then—he felt it. A familiar presence. Braze.

Curiosity piqued, Drystan followed the sensation, stepping into the surgery ward.

Inside, he found himself face to face with the room's occupants—

Braze.

And an unknown Kel Dor—currently on the surgery table.

Drystan raised an eyebrow, smirking as he leaned against the doorway.

"Oh, hey Braze."

His gaze flicked to the Kel Dor, deadpan.

"Congratulations—who's the father?"

“What did you bring with you?”
"Hey Loomi. welcome to the party. What diiiid you bring?"

"Oh, just some lil things I baked," Loomi noted, peering into her box. "I figured since the air would be okay for Ko here he'd actually be able to eat it and not have to drink a mush version. And I have tea."

It seemed like a nice thing to do. After all, Ko had to breath different air than they did. That meant there were a lot of nice things he just didn't get to enjoy with them. And that was very much something she wanted Ko to be able to enjoy. So here she was, making sure it could happen.

And then there was a new face...

"Oh, hey Braze."

His gaze flicked to the Kel Dor, deadpan.

"Congratulations—who's the father?"

"Father?" Loomi chirped, a bit confused. "I would assume that another Kel Dor is Ko's father, right?"

Her gaze shifted back to Ko.

"Right Ko?"

It seemed as though Braze too was unsure about what Loomi had brought. Was it something strange that not even the ecahni, with his good jade eyes could comprehend? It wasn't.

“Well that’s actually really nice of you… both of you…” Ko replied, finding the three different gifts here thoughtful and pleasant. “Yeah, I’m sure it’ll be much better without it being all mush.”

Ko didn’t recognize the new face, in fact he wouldn’t have been able to even if his vision wasn’t so blurry. Ko couldn’t understand what they’d said though. It made no sense to his pain killer addled mind. When Loomi responded to it Ko looked up at her, still confused.

“Um yeah… yeah my dad was a Kel Dor too I think.” His mind wasn’t at its sharpest and doubt had him wondering if he was answering the question correctly. “Well, yeah because Uncle Xojo is Kel Dor too and…” Ko closed his silver eyes in concentration. His poor brain is practically overheating now. At least with Braze's question earlier Ko completely misunderstood it.

Braze watched as Ko struggled to string his thoughts together, his silver eyes scrunching up in deep concentration. The Jedi Knight wasn't sure whether to be concerned or amused by the sight. It was clear the painkillers were hitting Ko hard—hard enough that basic logic was slipping through his fingers like sand.

Braze crossed his arms, his head tilting slightly. "Ko, I think you're about two thoughts away from short-circuiting." His voice carried the dry amusement of someone who had seen this kind of drugged-up rambling before. "You don't have to solve a family tree puzzle right now. Just breathe, yeah?"

He peered at Loomi's baked good trying to discern what they may have been.
