Above the Purple Mists

A tired, weary hand grasped onto a rock above, testing to see if it would make for a good hand-hold. Pulling up, a grunt sounded as the climber kicked into a new foot-hold to balance themselves. Sighing, Cassius Droma looked behind him, down to the violet-hued jungles far below. He was hanging from a tall spire, one of many dotting the landscape. A rucksack was strapped to his back, filled with supplies that he would need for the climb and for what would come afterwards. Taking another deep breath, he continued to climb.

Cassius wasn’t unfamiliar with Teth – it was a world he had visited and orbited many times during his days as a patrol pilot. His homeworld of Rinn was very close by, and pirates would use Teth as a jumping off point for operations against passing cargo freighters. Cassius had flown in the space and skies above, dealing out justice to the pirates and slavers that used the old B’omarr monasteries and smuggler hideouts as bases. Until recently, however, he hadn’t actually spent much time on the surface.

Nearby, on another spire, Jade Squadron was starting to bloom. They had moved in to an old smuggler hideout that looked like it hadn’t been used in centuries, but was still quite accommodating. It had most of what they had needed from the get-go: plenty of hangar and landing pad space, rooms for quarters, and even a working power system. Pilots and mechanics were toiling away at their fighters, as well as modifying U-wing shuttles for ease of use.

Every now and then, between recruiting new people to their burgeoning fighting force, Cassius felt the need to get away. Teth was already nice and isolated enough, so it wasn’t as if he had to go far. One of the pilots had dropped him off at the base of a far spire and would come get him if and only if Cassius signaled for pick-up.

Finally, Cassius’s hand gripped onto the precipice of the spire, the ground he had been working towards for a few hours now. With a final heave, he came up and over, twisting so he could sit on the edge. Sighing, he let his arms relax for a moment as he looked out over the landscape. Looking over his shoulder, he observed the flat top of the spire – it was only around one hundred meters wide, and a few other rocks and boulders dotted it. Some were large and clustered together enough that they could probably serve as a shelter, if need be.

Standing up for a moment, Cassius moved back a few meters and sat cross-legged, taking the pack off of his back and putting it to the side. Opening it, he brought out a few supplies for a small fire, as well as a few packets of ingredients. He knew that he would be starving by the time he finally made it to the top, so he figured he could reward himself by making a decent meal.

Looking back out over the purple jungles and mist, he spotted the spire that Jade Squadron called home, just barely visible on the horizon. For the first time in a while, he felt at peace, and at balance with the Force.
