Alchemy of the Light (Alkahest Training)

[member="Sav Elko"] [member="Nima Tann"] [member="Lady Kay"] [member="Mathias Zaren"]

The scene was the planet Tython. For a long time the planet was the heart of the Jedi Order, and though recent events had caused grave damage to the world, it was still a great setting for the training of new Jedi and their allies.

Phylis Alince, Jedi Master, had been working on the skill of Alkahest for many years. This ‘Light Alchemy’ was by no means as advanced as the Sith variant, but they were catching up. In order to assist this, and the galaxy in general, Phylis had decided to pass on her skills to people so they could take her art and develop it further.

She had acquired a room within the Jedi Temple, and set up several work benches along with a large electric forge and a collection of tools. She was not entirely sure who would come, though she did know at least a couple of Masters had sent their RSVP.

So now she waited, idly playing with a ring on her finger, for the others to arrive.

Nima Tann

Master of Her Own Destiny
Tython.

It had been a long time since Nima visited a Jedi Temple. No, she wasn't going to return to Jedi, it was for another reason. She came across an invitation by a familiar name while she was checking her datapad. [member="Phylis Alince"]... She remembered her from a party back when she was still with the Silver Jedi, and they didn't have the chance to talk since then. She was organising a training session about Alkahest, which was explained as "Light Side Alchemy" in the invitation, on Tython. "As a light side alternative to Sith alchemy. Hmm..." She read aloud. It could be an interesting experience, she thought, and decided to search more about the subject. After a couple of minutes, it piqued her interest enough that she decided to join.

And here she was, walking through the Temple towards the room the training was going to be held. She arrived shortly afterwards, and it seemed like she was the first "student" to arrive. Phylis was already in the room, waiting. She moved towards the Jedi Master, and nodded with a smile. "Master Alince. It has been a long time." She didn't know if she would remember her, Nima remembered since it was quite eventful for her. "I'm Nima, Sio's friend. We've met in a Silver Jedi party a while ago." She added just in case to avoid any awkwardness if she didn't. The day has just started after all.

Her ship had arrived at Tython the day before. Savannah had hoped to get some sight seeing in and well, it was a bit of a trip that she wasn’t 100% sure she was ready for. She had been told by Master Starchaser what to expect, sort of. That they were going to be Masters, what she was hoping to learn was something high end. It was going to be Masters and Knights with years of experience on her. But she had reiterated that she was working on learning the tricks of the Jal Shey, and had been studying the arts of alchemy and imbuement. It was what was calling to her.

Starchaser even stated it wasn’t his place to put her against her calling. All he could do was hope she would do what was right for her. And she was explaining how it could help her to be a shadow, going somewhere without weapons, and making something to assist her? How bad could that be?

She didn’t know this Master so she decided to do the smart thing and show up as a Jedi. Nothing on her hip but her stun baton, the blonde had made it to the temple room on Tython. She stepped up to the Master who was organizing this, Alince. “Greetings Master Alince. I’m Padawan Savannah Elko, of the New Jedi Order. Master Starchaser encouraged me to come and learn. I’ve been taking up study of the Jal Shey techniques, and learning what I can about imbuement.” Right, was that too much? She smiled at the Twi'lek having waited untilt he other was finished speaking.

This wasn't normal for her. Kay sat inside of her quarters on the Free Lady on the designated landing pad on Tython. She had never been there before, never even been in that section of space. Most importantly, she had never left her home for such a purpose. She was there to learn of a Force practice known as alchemy. Her husband had learned a bit of the skill, having applied it a few times. And while he was a former Jedi Grandmaster, it was perfectly acceptable for him to learn of it. Kay on the otherhand, was a politician. Her Force use had always been a secret. At least to most. She would often be teased by those that knew, that she was the next Palpatine, given that she was now the head of her own little Empire of sorts. But she didn't want to be thought of in that way if exposed. Her best bet was to keep from being exposed at all. Fortunately she wasn't well known, her government and people having no part in the grand scheme of things. They only kept the trade ecomony going.

Yet she figured that it was best to learn, if not for herself but for her children. So in keeping with her want of not being exposed, Kay exited her ship in disguise, putting on a blonde wig and tanning her skin with the help of a couple of make-up artists from Commenor's university. Even contacts were used to change the colour of her eyes from grey to green.

A few others were already assembled in the room of the Jedi Temple that Kay had been directed to. Introductions were being made the moment that she stepped through. She bowed her head and awaited her turn.

"Hello, I am Cessy from the Jedi Temple on Deneba." She didn't hide her Force Signature this time, for her alias Cessy wouldn't do that. Hopefully no one saw through her ruse. There wasn't any ill intent behind it, so that was a good thing.

(Apologies for the delay. Things have been hectic and I wanted to give people a chance to post. Will be looking at a 2-3 day posting cycle from now if possible.)

The people had started to arrive.

First was a purple Twi’lek she vaguely remembered. The name was eluding her a bit. Mina? Lona? Nima! She was proud she remembered even before the other woman said. She remembered her precisely because she was very unlike Siobhan’s other friends. She wore more clothing for a start.

“Nima…Tann, right? Good to see you again! How is your lovely wolf?”

The next to enter was a young Padawan.
“Welcome, Padawan Elko! Nice to meet you. Learning is always something which should be encouraged. Please, take a seat, you’ll find many of the techniques for the two methods are similar.”

Lastly was a blonde woman with green eyes, an unusual combination for sure, who came from Deneba. Phylis didn’t keep up with current rulers of the smaller nations, so she had no reason to believe otherwise.
“Welcome, Cessy. Pleased to meet you. Please, take a seat.”

This seemed to be it. Phylis mentally shrugged. Smaller classes were easier to teach anyway.
“Hmm, well, thank you all for coming. I hope over the next couple of days to impart some useful information to you. Let’s start off with going around the room to see what you all know about alchemy and imbuement; specifically about the creation process. There’s no shame in admitting you don’t know something – it is the spark which will help you learn all the more.”

Kay, or rather Cessy, took a seat as she was instructed. She folded her hands together and placed them on her lap like the attentative student that she hoped to be.

The class had just barely started and already she felt as though she was probably the least knowledgeable out of everyone else in the room. But no one had seemed quite eager to jump in straight away. Classes usually started like that. No one wanted to give the wrong answers, or to admit where their skills sorely lacked. Cessy was no stranger to that.

She glanced down to her wedding rings, Force imbued by her husband and their friend Atheus. Not only did they protect her from mind attacks, but they enhanced her Force Bond that she shared with her husband, enabling her to speak with him and connect with him over greater distances.

Cessy held up her hand before speaking. "I don't know much about it, or how it's done. Only that it takes much focus and a long time to do. Yet the effects on the objects can be quite marvelous. I'm hoping to learn the limitations, and what makes it a skill that isn't widely used. It's not something that I would abuse, but hope to enable me to protect others." More importantly her children.

Being remembered made her happy for some reason, even though she wouldn't blame her if she didn't. When the woman asked about Ice, Nima's smile widened.

"Oh, he's at home, probably destroying my furniture at the moment." She laughed. "He has grown a lot. Almost taller than me now." She added afterwards. The last time they've seen each other, the wolf was a half of what he was now. Nima could go on and on about him, but more people started to appear so she stopped herself.

The first one introduced herself as Savannah Eiko, a Padawan of New Jedi Order. She sounded enthusiastic enough. Once she was done with her introductions, she looked at the Twi'lek and smiled, which Nima responded with a nod and moved to take a seat.

Then it was the other woman's turn. She introduced herself as Cessy, from Deneba. It was a rather short introduction compared to the last one. Regardless, no one else seemed to be coming. So, the lesson started.

The Jedi Master's first question was whether the ones in the room knew about the alchemy or not. The first answer came from Cessy. Good. She thought. I'm not the only one who doesn't know much about this process.

"I have basic knowledge about alchemy and how and where it's used, however I haven't practiced it before. I just find the concept interesting, so I would be glad to learn more about it." She answered once it was her turn.

[member="Phylis Alince"] [member="Lady Kay"] [member="Sav Elko"]

Was she too nervous? Yes, probably. These people, they were actual Jedi. And what was she? Some rich kid off Thyferra whose Master was trying his best to make it so she could learn what she wanted. And that was why she was here. But hopefully she wouldn’t be blowing anything up. It wasn’t going to be her intent, but the Force, she could feel the power. Something Starchaser told her to respect.

She smiled at Master Alince and nodded. “Thank you.” Finding a seat, she adjusted her Jedi robes and looking between the others. This Cessy and Nima. Other women, but ones who seemed more put together than she was. Hell, she was wondering if she had a missed text or not. Right, focus.

“I’m still a padawan but Coren--- Master Starchaser has pushed me in the direction of the Artisans. I have spent some time on Felucia and chasing down Jal Shey information. Aside from that is all textual, really.” She smiled, trying to disperse her nerves. “Aside from that though.” She shrugged and let her statement hang.

Phylis listened first to Cessy, nodding. “Very true, all of what you say is correct. I hope that combined we can push the limits of what might be known and performed.”

To Nima next. Ice had gotten bigger? Phylis vaguely ruminated on the size of doghouse and basket which would be needed.
“Excellent. I hope indeed to sate your curiosity.”

Phylis nodded to the Padawan. Likely she would not have the inner strength to make use of this…yet. In time though she would.
“I well understand the need to learn in practice as oppose to learn via text. That is the only way to really experience things.”

She walked to her workbench and fired up the forge and brought out her collection of tools.
“The Sith have long worked both in inanimate objects and in the corruption and perversion of life; Sithspawn. Now of course, there are moral and ethical reasons not to test on living creatures, and certainly not to turn them into creatures of war. Therefore we shall concern ourselves solely with inanimate objects. However, I have successfully created a, hmm, Jedispawn previously, by infusing the Light into a common rat. That is more advanced and theoretical but I will show you what can be done.”
She produced a carrier where a rat was sitting curled up. She handed the carrier to Nima and asked her to pass it around. They would sense the Light deeply infused within this adorable little rodent.

“Now, for inanimate objects, what I most work with is metal, and the reason is simple; when melted the molecular bonds are very weak and changeable, but when cooled and shaped it becomes almost unbreakable. Even the most common copper or gold infused with the Force becomes as unbreakable as forged Beskar.”
She liked to back up her claims, and so removed her gold necklace and used the Force to hold it aloft whilst her lightsabre’s ignited green blade touched the gold pendant. The usually soft metal neither melted nor even heated as she could have it drop into her hand as she deactivated her lightsabre.

“And so, if no one has any further questions we shall begin.”

Kay was glad that she wasn't the only one that had minimal knowledge. But that was why they were all there, wasn't it? To learn and to grow. When [member="Sav Elko"] spoke of Jal Shey, she had no idea of what she was talking about. It was another language to her, much like all of the different lightsaber forms and such.

Now [member="Phylis Alince"] was showing them something she hadn't seen before. A Jedi spawn of sorts. Kay hadn't even seen a Sithspawn yet, let alone a Jedi one. She had only heard of them. As [member="Nima Tann"] passed around the carrier, she looked at the little creature inside. It seemed normal and content.

As she passed the carrier onto Sav, she listened to Phylis talk about the use of metals in alchemy. Selfconsciously, Kay began to turn her rings on her finger, wondering if they too had the strength to withstand a lightsaber. Of course she'd never dare try. They were her wedding rings and quite precious to her.

There were no further questions from her. At least not right now. She was just happy for the lesson to continue.

It made her feel a bit better that a respected Jedi Master knew that she needed to get her hands on experience. Coren Starchaser had taught her a few things, and was working all the time to enhance how the Force can help enhance other aspects of her day-to-day life. She was able to use it with tech manipulation and upgrades, down to flight, and investigation. She looked up and smiled softly. Didn’t need to look too excited or pleased.

Jedispawn?

For what she had read in [member="Taeli Raaf"]’s library, she had heard of Sithspawn, and what Alince had said was a review for her. This focus on Jedispawn though, it made some sense, but it seemed as if it would only be temporary? She wasn’t sure, because otherwise you were modifying nature. She felt the Force in the rat, but… was it too much? It didn’t seem deformed, or enhanced in any way to adversely affect its being, much like the Sithspawn could do.

Changing them, and modifying them in terrible ways.

She took the rat from Cessy with a smile, tapping at the cage and making some noises. She wanted to focus, but look how cute! Sure, not a cat, but there was one on her ship, maybe… Someday? Sav wasn’t sure. The girl smiled.

“How is the metal work different than Force weapon, or imbuement?”

Nima Tann

Master of Her Own Destiny
The Jedi Master started with an explanation which surprised her. She was familiar with Sithspawn, she has faced a lot of them in the battlefield. But a Jedispawn was a foreign concept to her. A rat infused with the Light. Many thoughts came in mind since she was familiar with the counterpart, most of them were about the animal's health and how this all worked. She found some answers once Phylis handed Nima the carrier that held the said little animal. She could definitely sense the Light Side in its aura, and it looked like a normal and happy little pet. Still, the questions remained. She would ask them later, now, not to interrupt the session, she handed the carrier to Cessy.

Meanwhile, something caught her attention. The rat suddenly raised its head and started sniffing the air. Breathing faster, it stood up and started moving left and right quickly. Speaking from experience, Ice did that whenever he was nervous. She frowned.

Always trust in an animal's intuition.

Did it sense something? Nima didn't want to start accusing people out of the blue, but still, it was quite suspicious. Especially since its aura was quite relaxed before. But of course, it could just be because it got nervous because of the new faces. She didn't say anything, for now. She was probably being paranoid anyway, so she focused on the lecture.

Next, Phylis demonstrated the durability of an item crafted with Alkahest. The gold necklace, even though touched by a lightsaber, was still in one piece. Once the demonstration was over, it was their turn to create themselves one. But before, she had a question.

"So, I have a question about Jedispawn. How do you infuse a living being with the Light? Does the procedure hurt them, physically or mentally?"

[member="Phylis Alince"] [member="Sav Elko"] [member="Lady Kay"]

[member="Lady Kay"] [member="Nima Tann"] [member="Sav Elko"]

Phylis took Nima’s question first.
“Hmm, well, the process for a living being is quite intensive. I required the assistance of another Jedi Master to aid me when I did so. Perhaps in time I would be able to handle it alone. Now, I only performed this experiment on this rat, and Nibbles here was sedated during the process. I carefully monitored his brain and heart activity, and from what I could tell he experienced no discomfit, and when he woke up he was quite happy. How it would go with a sentient being? I’m not sure…that is why I have not done one yet.”

Next to the Padawan.
“It is very similar, except that I suggest doing it when the metal is molten because it allows me to imbue and strengthen the Force bond. There is also a very key difference I will cover soon.”

She went to collect Nibbles, noting the strange reaction he had to Cessy. Usually Nibbles was a very friendly and amiable sort.
There was something odd about Cessy, but she couldn’t tell what. It had nothing to do with her appearance, but was more down to something…undefined.
She let it be for now.

The furnace pinged slightly and she went to it and inserted some copper ingots.
“Since I suspect that none of you are trained smiths I will assist you with this section. When the copper is melted I will show you the process. But first, I will need a small measure of blood from each of you. That is the key difference between this and regular imbuement. Blood is the most powerful conduit of Force energy I have discovered, and it allows you to make the item tethered only to you. It will only work properly if you use it, no one else can properly do so.”

She produced four sterilised syringes and offered them to each person.
“I need only a quarter of this length. If you are squeamish about needles I can help.”

Kay-Larr

Sphaera Tea Company Owner
Kay furrowed her brows as the rat seemed to have woken up when it was around her. Or maybe it was just from [member="Sav Elko"] tapping on the carrier. More than likely that was it. The rodent's ears were far more sensitive, so the tapping must've sounded quite loud and disruptive.

Both Sav and [member="Nima Tann"] had asked some good questions. They were clearly used to a classroom-type setting of learning, whereas Kay was not. But she listened intently, making mental notes. Although she had no intention of creating a Jedispawn or anything of the sort, it was good to know that it was difficult to do.

And now the topic came about a blood sample. And needles. Kay's body stiffened at the thought of it, her mind already taking her back to the horrible situations that she had encountered in her life that needles were a part of. All of them were traumatizing and it was because of them that she had developed a phobia. Her eyes met those of [member="Phylis Alince"] as the Jedi Master stood there with the needle in hand. "I don't like needles. I--you'll have to do it for me." She clenched her jaw. Veiere had never told her that there was bloodwork involved. But then again, she had never asked him either.

The thing with Savannah was that she just didn’t know what to expect most of the time from people. She was not good good at pin pointing how the Force moved around one person over another, unless it was blatantly obvious. Sure, Starchaser said she had the capability of doing that, and she wanted to be able to stalk down the dark side, and use everything in her power to bring them down, to ensure nothing like Thyferra ever happened again. It wasn’t a revenge thought, it was to protect those who needed it.

The Bacta Princess looked between Masters Tann and Alince and nodded. Sedated and monitored, that seemed less intrusive than it could have been. The Sith, they created their sithspawn very aggressively. And it was not always successful, and by the nature of the Dark Side, just… destructive. She was smiling as she was listening, she was really going to need another latte soon.

Focus, Elko.

But then her question was approached about the forging. “Oh, during the smelting process? I understand that, and this is definitely above my paygrade, so to speak, but what if the need arose to perform this on the fly?” She was thinking ahead to lessons Starchaser had taught her. Of course, it could all be answered later, but why wait? She was ready to use the forge here, despite Cessy’s misgivings about needles.

Maybe the blood had something to do with the difference between a Jal Shey imbuement and the Alkahest? She had read tales of Sith Alchemists modifying items on the fly, could blood have been involved? She never thought of that. Biting her lip, she fell into the Force, to calm her nerves, before sticking herself to retrieve the needed amount. Yeah, it hurt more than the flinch let on.

Sonofa…

Phylis's response to her question satisfied her a bit, but she still thought tampering with nature wasn't a good idea. She was open to learn more about this subject though, perhaps it had more pros than cons. Having opinions just because one knew about something's counterpart wasn't healthy. So, she listened to Phylis answering the Padawan's question, and then the lecture proceeded with Phylis putting some copper ingots inside the furnace.

She was no smith indeed, as she said before, she had no experience with any of this at all. The Twi'lek was going to need the Jedi Master's assistance a lot, it seemed. When Phylis offered them syringes and said that she needed a drop of their blood to "make the item tethered to them", she confusedly raised an eyebrow. So, blood was involved. If this lecture wasn't held by Phylis, she would be concerned. Instead, she was more curious now.

Nima heard that Cessy didn't like needles that much and noticed the sign of fear in her tone. After a glance, she returned to what she was doing and drew the required amount of blood from her arm with a sigh.

Phylis smiled reassuringly and came over to the blonde woman Cessy.
“I understand. Relax…” she said softly. She passed her hand over the woman’s brow, using the Force to calm her a little. “Just a little jab…” she said as she applied the antiseptic and then applied the needle. “There, all done!”

Gathering the other two vials she put them into a rack, labelled with the person’s name.

“It can be done on the fly with some objects. I find that the result though except with crystals is imperfect. If the molecular bonds are not weakened then the application of Force energy tends to strengthen the material, but make it more brittle. In time I might be able to create a stronger application which works faster, but not for now.”

The furnace was ready, so she turned to it and gestured to the people. “Come forward, all of you, but be very careful not to touch these.”

With a gesture the furnace opened and a gust of heat washed out. From inside a large ceramic crucible was now filled with liquid copper, hissing and bubbling. Disdaining the need for tongs she used the Force to carry it through the air and precisely pour it into a flat mould. She then replaced it in the furnace and closed the door.

“Now, as the metal is molten, this is our time. Nima, come forward for me. I want you to focus on the metal before you. Reach out to it with your mind, feel the metal. I’m going to help you, take my hand.”

One of the Jedi’s hands took Nima’s, the other started to glow as she directed the energy of the Force, and especially the Light into the metal. Part way through she took Nima’s blood and added it to the metal. Then, transferring the cooling metal to an anvil she beat it, not with a physical hammer, but with the Force, the invisible blows ringing out as Phylis stared down intently at the metal, one hand still in Nima’s, the other glowing.

When at last she was done she took a delicate stencil and etched some designs on it so that it was useable as a necklace.

Finally she looked up at the others, smiled tiredly. “It’s done. Once it has cooled it will be set permanently. This particular one, Nima, will allow you to enhance your telepathic abilities so you can focus better on them. Only you and I can use it though.”

The copper disk fairly glowed with the Force now, the Light Side permeating it.

“Now you’ve seen how it works, I will be able to show you how to do it. Cessy, Sav, do you have anything particular you’d like it to do? It is best used to enhance your existing abilities.”

Both [member="Sav Elko"] and [member="Nima Tann"] were just fine with their needles. Kay was a little disheartened that she was the only squeamish one. But everyone had their quirks, their phobias, their weaknesses. This just happened to be hers.

As [member="Phylis Alince"] placed her hand on her forehead, her eyes half closed as a sudden wave of calmness came over her. Of course she knew that the Jedi Master was doing it, but Kay welcomed the help all the same, her body growing relaxed and tensing only slightly as the needle pierced her skin. Thankfully the ordeal didn't last long.

Kay gave herself a moment before walking over to the furnace, not wanting to risk getting light headed. The wave of heat surely didn't help. She let herself get used to it before stepping forward. Her hands clasped in front of her as she watched the process. What was particularily strange was the sounds that came as the copper was moulded. It sounded just like when Veiere was creating armour for them and other such things. Her eyes felt almost as though they were being tricked, yet she knew that they weren't.

Kay was almost lost in the process, mesmirized even, and it took her alias' name being called to draw her from her thoughts. Best used to enhance her own abilities? "I'm learning this for my children. We are going to be apart soon and I want to be able to reach them when they are far away." And not through the holonet or comms channels or anything electronic. Her husband had forged rings for their wedding. They had the abilities of helping to prevent mind attacks and to enhance their Force Bond, allowing them to communicate at further distances than before. With their twins moving out to different sectors of the Galaxy, she would always worry about their safety and their happiness.

For Savannah, this, she knew, was going to be out of her league. The blonde Thyferran was excited nonetheless. Watching the other Jedi Masters, she was in awe of just what they even might have seen. She had understood the theory behind much of this, spending the past few months studying up on imbuement and Sith alchemy, from a purely academic standpoint. Something about it just made her… shiver. But when the tide had turned and light side alchemy had come across her nose? She couldn’t resist.

“So, don’t expect miracles if we needed to strengthen a material in the field and have it last?” She bit her lip. Maybe there was a way, who knew? She was not the one who was a master of this, and she wasn’t about to start thinking she was. Imbuement worked fine for her uses for now, but once she got into the headspace for this? Perhaps it could go better.

She bit her lip as she watched the Twi’lek move and focus. Savannah relaxed, letting the Force wash over her, to feel it around her and her sisters in the Force. She smiled, knowing what she could maybe do. She was wondering though. When she was called up, she looked. “Would it be possible to create a bracelet that could enhance a power? Or add protection? Either way, it’d be one in the same…” She looked up to Master Alince.

Nima Tann

Master of Her Own Destiny
The vials were ready once Phylis took Cessy's blood, and the coppers were as well. The molten metal flew across the room and found the mould. Nima was suddenly taken aback when Phylis called her name and asked her to move forward. Going first for something she had no idea about caused some anxiety. Especially since they had an audience. And of course, the increasing heat made it worse. Nonetheless, there was nothing to do, so she nodded and moved a step forward. Luckily, Phylis told her she was going to help. Offering her hand to the Jedi Master, she extended her other and took a deep breath. "Focus on the metal. How difficult can it be?"

And focus she did. Soon, all the voices and movement except the metal became inconspicuous to her.

The hissing, the bubbling, the heat. The Force. The Light, radiating. Each and every hit of the invisible hammer. Moving, shaping metal. Her blood mixing with the metal. Metal, taking shape and becoming an object. A necklace. Exhaustion.

She opened her eyes again once she heard the Jedi Master. It was done. Even though Nima didn't do much but to focus, she felt tired. Did this process create some kind of a temporary bond between them? Or was it just an effect of the aura of Light? Something to ask about later.

"It was an enlightening experience. Thank you." She said returning the smile, and stepped back. Now it was the others' turn.
