Private An Elegant Weapon for a More Civilized Age

Location: New Cov Temple

The hum of the training sabers echoed throughout the ancient stone halls of the New Cov Temple. Young Kuhbee, a Wookiee cub, stood in the center of the chamber, his fur bristling with frustration. Sweat dripped down his brow as his small, yet muscular hands gripped the hilt of his lightsaber. He had been at this for hours, trying to channel the Force, trying to control the blade—but nothing was going right.

He had seen the Jedi Masters wield their sabers with such grace, their movements fluid and precise, like water flowing in a calm stream. Kuhbee, however, felt as if he was swinging a large, cumbersome branch through a storm. Every attempt felt clumsy, every motion too slow or too quick.

His lightsaber flickered and sputtered, dimming in his hand as he growled in frustration, his sharp teeth bared. His powerful, yet still-growing body seemed to act against him, and each time he missed his target or lost control, his anger swelled.

Finally, unable to hold it back any longer, Kuhbee let out a loud, guttural roar that reverberated through the temple's stone walls. His eyes narrowed, fists tightening around the hilt of the saber as he threw himself into another strike. But it was no use—he was getting nowhere. The ancient stone floor beneath him rumbled slightly as the roar echoed in his chest. How could he ever be as graceful as the Jedi when his instincts were so different? How could he possibly control a weapon of such finesse when everything inside of him screamed for strength and power?

Kuhbee's fur stood on end, and as his frustration reached its peak, he raised the blade again, hoping this time—this time—it would work.

Trips to New Cov were always a welcome treat for Jonyna. To say Jonyna loved the jungle would be an understatement, given her own home-world. Arriving in the Skytiger, Jonyna had heard that a padawan had been struggling with their saber training. At first, Jonyna wasn't one to prioritize such a thing, especially when there were other masters and knights who could pick up the slack. It wasn't because of a lack of caring, Jonyna cared deeply about the padawans under her, but she was just always so busy with more pressing matters. Setting up a fleet will do that.

Then she found out who it was.

Jonyna had heard what happened to Kuhbee.

The Mandalorians had done it again. To another planet, another species.

The wookies had been through enough.

As Jonyna walked through the halls of the temple, a place she had quite a bit of history in as well, she heard the roar of the padawan ring through the halls, and Jonyna double timed it until she found the wookie standing there, frustrated.

Luckily, Jonyna's Shyriiwook was rather good.

<You okay, kiddo?>

Kuhbee turned when Master Si entered the room. He felt a little foolish for his outburst now. It seemed his Wookie temper was always getting in the way. Add in the fact that Kuhbee was so young and he was extra emotional it seemed.

[Hello Master Si... I'm sorry if I disturbed you... ]
He let the training saber deactivate and hung his head slightly. The memories of Woostri were fresh in his mind and every time he slept he saw the sithspawn beast coming at him. He was desperate to learn how to defend himself but mostly he was afraid. His fear was consuming him.

[I'm just working on saber stuff...]

It didn't take a jedi master to figure out that Kuhbee was going through some emotional turmoil. Jonyna didn't even need to ask, but she felt obligated to at least help.

<Mind if I help? I'm pretty good with sabers.>

Jonyna drew her own blade, bringing it up to her face to whisper something to it, then igniting it as she took a Form I stance.

[I would appreciate the help Master Si.]

Kuhbee watched as her own blade ignited and he felt a shiver run down his spine as he remembered the Sith beast running towards him in the invasion. He was lucky to be alive. The cub felt so young and out of place.

He tried to take a stance like she had taken, trying to get his footing correct.

Jonyna smiled, looking to the wookie. <Right foot slightly to the left.> She offered. <Your stance is just as important as your bladework. If your footing is wrong, you'll slip from a heavy blow and be on the ground, ready to be stabbed.>

At the mention of being stabbed Kuhbee visibly winced, the image of the Sithspawn charging at him flashing into his mind. He felt so cowardly and knew that as a Wookie he was supposed to be strong and a fierce warrior. But Kuhbee had been exiled from Wookie society at a young age and maybe that was why he hadn't learned to be brave? Or maybe he was just a wuss? He felt like one for sure.

He corrected his feet and held up his training saber, almost reluctantly.

[Is this better?]

Jonyna nodded, giving the wookie a soft smile. <Keep your stance firm, and step with purpose. Show me a few jabs, kiddo.>

She wanted to instill confidence in every padawan she trained, but this one showed anxiety. She could easily hazard a guess as of why. With Kashyyyk under the mando rule, much like her own world, it's future was uncertain.

But one day it'd be free. She was certain of that. Crusaders, governments, empires. None of them last.

900 years later, and she still struggled herself with that fact.

Kuhbee kept his feet firmly planted on the ground like Master Si had said. He raised his training saber and swung it wide, then tried a few jabs, working hard to keep his feet planted firmly in place as she had shown him.

As he moved his arms he flinched slightly and deactivated the saber, and hung his head. [Every time I try I see the Sithspawn charging me. It scares me.]

He let out a low moan of defeat.

Jonyna knelt down, meeting the wookie's eyes with a stern gaze as she poked his chest. "Brave heart." She said in basic, before smiling. <You're stronger than you know. The sithspawn can't hurt you here, and if you get better, it wouldn't hurt you again. Always get smarter, tougher, sharper. Then one day, the monsters won't be as scary.>

She remembered a time when Stormtroopers were the monsters. Inquisitors. Moffs. Now, she stared them down with courage and defiance.

Kuhbee listened to Master Si and gave a low growl of understanding. She was saying if he got stronger he wouldn't have to be afraid, but she wasn't teasing him for being afraid. He felt so cowardly and he knew Wookies were supposed to be brave. He felt like a failure but he really wanted to learn.

He took a deep breath and turned the saber back on. He got into the stance again and then like she asked he showed her his finest jab skills, trying not to think about the Sithspawn beast as he did so.

Jonyna smiled, idly watching the boy jab at the air. He was improving. <Good work. I can get something that might help, he's back at my ship.> She rolled her shoulders. <Unless you'd like to train with me. I don't go easy, but I'm willing.>

Jonyna watched the wookie, before pouting slightly. "Alright, let's spar. First off though, what do you already know? Tell me everything."

If she was gonna teach her, she needed to know what she didn't need to teach.

[Well Jedi Knight Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor taught me how to catch and throw objects with the Force. My Master Gil Horn Gil Horn has been working with me in an obstacle course to get my balance and physical strength up to par. But I have done little saber training. I am just starting. Soon I will be building my own saber.]

He hopped that was detailed enough for her. Kuhbee was just starting on his lightsaber journey now that he had mastered the balance and trusting the Force to move with his eyes closed.

That...wasn't much. Perhaps a spar was out of their wheelhouse.

"Alright, well...let me ask you this then. What do you want to learn? I've found my best training comes from focusing on different paths that I can specialize in. I'm an elementalist, a blade master, and a swarmer. What do you want to be?"
