Animu & Mango

Or, anime and manga for /a/ newfriends. As in, stuff like Gundam, Evangelion, Dragon Ball Z, and others.

If you like watching anime, what is your favorite show and which ones are you watching now?

Right now, the most enjoyable show of the season for me is Valvrave. Whether it is a parody or not, I do not know. It seems like it's trying to be a Poe intentionally. I want to believe that it's just Sunrise (the company that made Gundam) parodying itself, but it's just so ridiculous. Best worst anime of all years.

I usually dislike associating with certain types of anime fans as well. Usually, the type that only attends Japan/Anime Club or uses Japanese words in the middle of a conversation when they're not using /a/ memes (most I imagine probably never heard of /a/ anyway, so that'd be almost all the time).

Then again, pretty much most of my fraternity is into anime (Evangelion, Berserk, Naruto), and we're all moderately socially acceptable. At our best. Sometimes.

I'm not much of an Anime person. I don't get the fuss around it. It's just a normal show/film but drawn in a certain style? Why does that garner so much attention and have such a specific fanbase? :S

would you consider the Final Fantasy series?
The Final Fantasy series is mostly just the video game series. Yet it's developed by a Japanese company, so similarities with the style of anime are a given.

In my opinion, it is just another type of entertainment much like music, films, western animation, etc. Just as some people find more enjoyment out of reading a book than watching a film, some people enjoy anime more than western animation. I'm addicted to entertainment of all kinds, so I do like western animation such as South Park, Family Guy, and the good ol' 90's cartoons. Yet, I also like anime.

I have found that some of the staples of anime actually fill a niche that western animation and even western films have not covered much of. The intrigue of a different culture is always there, and sometimes the drawing can be very appealing. Things such as mecha has not been in western mainstream for too long (think Transformers and Pacific Rim). Due to being animated, what is shown on screen can be extremely larger than life, yet a lot of western animation beyond family shows (Avatar, Gargoyles, etc.) focuses on comedy (Family Guy, South Park). Whereas anime, even for shows clearly not for children, covers as broad of a range as film while also having the appeal of being larger than life that animation usually brings.

I think I get what App means. I like things with mechs. (Read: I like robots and stuff getting blown up. I'm a true intellectual)

lol.

I enjoy it from time to time. It mostly things I sink mindless hours into with no expectations of finding gold.

HOWEVER

Molester Man and The Little Demon and the Biscuit Hammer are awesome.

My favorite shows are Dragonball Z, Fairy Tail, and Naruto (though I don't wish to catch up on Naruto anymore)

I'm 28 now. So I remember cartoons being awesome and Anime being a teen thing. That said,
  • Dragonball Z: Loved it. Cliffhangers for days. Sadly, it's extremely politically incorrect. Haha.
  • Cowboy Bebop: Rocked my world. The classiest cartoon ever.
  • Tenchi Muyo: Lightsabers, Tree Ships, Evil Gods, and Harems. Yep. Winning.
  • Neo Genesis Evangelion: So cool when it started. Beyond dat-creepy when it ended. I hear the Director actually went nuts too.
  • Gundam Wing: Where I started with Jap-Mecha. Branched out into all the other Gundam series. 8th MS Team was my fav cause it felt original.
  • Gargantia: I try to watch this now. But I'm getting to old for the same/same teenage war dramas anymore.

I used to watch manga and anime , then i took a wife to the knee...

But seriously its all good, not much on i like anymore. Older stuff like Akira was always my forte.

Qae Shena

Super Shaper Puppy!
08th MS team is BEST mecha. G Gundam is also love.

Most people who know me, know that I am a mecha nut. I've seen all the Gundams (including what Unicorn has been subbed, which needs to happen faster), then everything from Evangelion to Sky Girls to Full Metal Panic, Macross, Gaiking, GaoGaiGar (favourite) and SHIIIIN GETTAAAAA. And that's just the surface! Gotta love it.

I do watch other stuff, but tbh I come back to mecha almost every time. And Ghibli.

Dude, but Naruto is reaching the climax now and dropping bombs left and right. It is a hoot and a half.

Naruto is a prime example of a series that I do not think is really good or high quality but it is good simplistic fun.

here for your dad
Bebop. Totes.

I liked Speed Grapher because it had Duran Duran as the opening title song.

Also, the obvious so-mainstream it's linked to the ocean answer of Studio Ghibli.

Dropping bombs, but Sasuke rejoining Konoha is really absurd

It would probably win a lot more Academy Awards if it could be translated fairly quickly. Nearly every major critic, including Ebert before he passed, are in love with Studio Ghibli. You should also recommend the anime where you got Steph's original avatar. :p

Also, I recommend people watching Gargantia when they can. It's on Crunchy Roll, and it's full of healing goodness.

Plus, some main and supporting characters are finally going to be massacred next episode, I believe.
