Description: The Armorer-class Support Corvette is Lucerne Lab's first foray into the capital ship market. Rather than completely design a new starship, Lucerne Labs took the design of an ancient bulk freighter design, modernized it, and modified it with extra equipment to fit their mission profile. The Armorer-class is designed to escort larger starships into battle, where its multiple flak cannons and twenty quad laser cannons can produce blistering streams of fire which can efficiently mow down oncoming starfighters and missiles attacking the larger ship. It's only anti-capital ship weapons are a pair of ion cannons. The old design's cargo bay has now been converted to be the ship's expansive repair bay, whose capabilities allow the Armorer to make hasty repairs during combat to nearby friendly ships.
The hull of the vessel is composed of a sturdy ferrocarbon frame designed to resist the stresses of hard combat maneuvering. This durable frame is then plated with two sets of quadranium steel on most areas of the ship. The first set is actually very thin while the second set is of the more usual armor thickness. These two layers acts as spaced armor to better protect the ship against ion and explosive attacks, with the hard vacuum in between acting as an insulator. When an ion strike or other electromagnetic pulse weapon is somewhat deadened by the extra distance alone (except on systems coming through the hull, such as weapon turrets, comm arrays, etc), the warheads and other explosive devices are prematurely detonated from going against the main hull, preventing penetration by explosive force. Lastly, the ship's viewports are made out of transparisteel, though often quadranium steel blastscreens frequently cover the viewports to better protect the craft's occupants. The hull itself is then protected by two sets of identical shield generators and their projectors, with one set always acting as a reserve back-up if the first is destroyed, damaged, or otherwise offline.
This all makes the Armorer a little more durable in battle than the average corvette so that it can accompany heavier warships into the thick of battle. Two small solar ionization reactors sit in the rear of the starship on its central axis, right in front of the ship's ion engine block. The front of the craft holds its bridge, which is set just aft of four equidistantly-spaced flak cannon turrets at the bow the starship. These weapons are then supplemented by twenty quad laser cannons across the rest of the ship's hull. This armament makes it a reasonably effective screening ship. None of this is exceptionally unusual for a support corvette. But whereas many other support corvettes carry starfighters, the Armorer carries none. Instead, where the hangars would be are the ship's pride and joy: its relatively massive repair bay.
The repair bay holds small scale machinery (to make new parts), parts and vacuum suit storage lockers, shuttles and/or light transports (to take repairs crews out to damaged ships), and stations where dozens of repair droids can recharge and be serviced. A sampling of the parts kept on hand include Given Emergency Vacuum seals (to seal hull breaches), precharged EMS-500 emergency capacitors (to provide a mobile power supply to certain parts), portable life support generators, basic electrical repairs supplies, fire suppression equipment, and variously sized metal plates and welding supplies for sturdier repairs. The repair droids widely vary, though popular models carried include copies of Verpine Hatchling droids and R-series astromech droids. These droids can be carried to the target vessel by the transports or ejected out of the various airlocks across the Armorer's hull if the target is close enough. All of this is geared to keeping other ships running at their basic level as spacegoing vessels until more extensive and permanent repairs can be done at a shipyard to repair their more complicated systems on a permanent basis. While the Armorer was not specifically designed to repair small craft like shuttles or starfighters, occasionally one of them will park where one of the bay's own shuttles is normally kept to be serviced.
While Armorers can and are often deployed as simple anti-starfighter starships, they tend to be found escorting ships that are critical to a mission's success, such as a transport carrying bacta on a distant journey to a plague-assaulted world or guarding the flanks of an admiral's flagship on an assault mission. Unlike some of Lucerne Labs products, the Armorer-class is available on the open market, though Lucerne Labs tends to screen the buyers to ensure that they are not used for illicit purposes. The very first Armorer-class Support Corvette, the Matthew Lucerne, is the flagship of Lucerne Labs. Aside from being used as a demonstration model, the starship uses its repair bays to make and test prototypes of missiles, starfighters, and starship subsystems on a very limited production.
