Ionization: Built-in ionization field that can be enabled or disabled by gun crews. The ionization field may help shells reach their target.
Range: Effectiveness decreases at both short and [SIZE=10pt]long-range[/SIZE] combat. Shells at the long-range may fail to find their target, worse - strike friendlies. Faster and more maneuverable vessels may be able to evade the shells at either short/long range. While this may occur at the standard range, it is less likely. Smaller craft such as starfighters or combat shuttles will certainly find evading Atalanta’s twin-barrel guns easier than capital ships.
After Project Bellona’s wrap up, Project Atalanta started and would be started quickly. In [SIZE=10pt]essence[/SIZE], it would perform the same function as the Bellona, with the exception that the Atalanta would be most effective at standard or average turbolaser range. In addition, this mass driver cannon would not fire 150mm shells, but instead, 127mm shells and would do so using a twin-barrel design for the most effective damage output.
Still, the Atalanta suffers her own set of drawbacks - range being the foremost as she lacks the ability to effectively damage opponents beyond standard combat range. These shells, much as in the case of the Hailstone, Mars or Bellona are indiscriminate once they’ve been fired they’ll strike whatever may lay in their path. In short-range the accuracy of the Atalanta begins to falter, however, it is the effectiveness of the shots versus the target. Faster, more maneuverable craft such as starfighters or combat shuttle may easily evade [SIZE=10pt]Atalanta’s[/SIZE] shells, even with automated assistance.
Production for the Atalanta has been up scaled to minor due to the smaller caliber and efforts on behalf of [SIZE=10pt]industry[/SIZE] leaders within the Sith Empire.
