Back to Basics

Dusaro had figured she was going to be able to deal with the throw fairly easily as she had not put quite enough force into her move for him to be able to pull the move off with its full potential. That was fine though, he hadn't expected nor planned on having such an effect, if he wanted the full effect he would have done some form of punch after getting a solid grip then a far more harsher throw, but that was once again not the purpose. He was trying to get across the idea of Echani Martial Arts at a basic level, was reacting to the opposing sides movement with one to effectively 'cancel' it out. Rather than a game of coming out on top, it was a game of equals. There was more to it than that, but to understand the deeper aspects that was the starting point.

And Sky seemed to be getting the idea that he was trying to show her, picking up on it without him needing to give her any small verbal hints of more overt suggestions, Dusaro doing a quick little dodge back away from the kick, dodging it by just a breaths width of space before returning with a kick. Without interrupting or slowing how flow of movements as their spar continued, Dusaro spoke softly, so as to not overly disturb the moment. "You caught on well... The next part is the hard one." He said while deftly dodging and catching a series of jabs, countering with a more fierce right jab of his own. "Fight while letting your emotions accent your movements. Not control them, but accent." Normally, he would not give any explanation on this part, Dusaro certainly had not been given any when his mother taught him. But Sky had grown up differently from him. Dusaro was raised with the Echani Culture and learned it since he was four years old, Sky had not. So he gave her a little bit of a hint to help her along.

After the little explanation, Dusaro began to show what he meant. He shifted his stance from the more passive, reactionary to one that was far more direct. It was completly natural, enough that the sudden more aggressive change in his fighting style might throw her off if Sky did not react fast enough, Dusaro launching a open palmed strike at her stomach and followed it up with a roundhouse from his left leg. But just as before, he was not actively trying to defeat her, this was still an instructional battle. He held himself back from anything too crazy, even if he wanted to do more. That desire to do more made him blink as though he had just noticed something out of place.

Sukai planted her feet firmly into the ground as she finished her kick, watching as Dus returned with his own kick to her middle, Sukai reacting by placing her arm just on his ankle, parrying the blow by just a bit, letting his leg by without counter attacking. "Well you do have to be perceptive in this world, but I did do a little bit of study before we started, I know more or less what to expect". That and seeing first hand how Dus reacted to her strikes, the way he 'just' barley parried, returning with attacks that also could be easily but just parried, not that is was easy. Keeping her strength back but also putting in enough effort to avoid being hurt was certainly harder then she expected, a new challenge that must could be said, though it also highlighted why the Echani used it.

"Accent"? she replied moving her arm to intercept the right hook, moving her body around it to avoid the strike while countering with her own mild attack. It did not make a whole lot of sense to begin with though she had no reason to doubt the Echani in front of her at this moment, only question was how one did that exactly. She took a moment to observe Dus and the way he stood and moved, it was not tense and firm like her usual marital art stance it was relaxed, natural? It was as good as a description as she could glean, but a good one never the least, herself trying to follow the same method, remembering what the monks of her home planet did.

It seemed though Dus was not allowing for to much time, quickly starting the fight up once again, this time Sukai letting her emotions flow, countering his palm strike with her own, though aimed at the mans wrist to divert the attack just to her left. The round house kick was not as hard to follow through but Sukai did have an idea, well feeling was more like it. Moving forwards she used her body to adsorb the kick, but in doing so also went with it before grabbing hold, performing a small side throw with the momentum of the kick, allowing most of the impact to dissipate over distance.

Responding with 'just enough' force was much harder than simple overwhelming force. Dusaro was plenty capable of doing simple overwhelming force thanks to sheer, physical strength when compared to most species. It wasn't until some of the freakishly strong races like Barabels or Wookiees that Dus would get seriously worried about a contest of simple strength. But to fight in such a simple way would not end well against those with skill and even someone signifigantly weaker could with only skill counter such a manner of fighting. Good for Dus that he had both skill and strength.

He simply nodded in response to her question, not able to tell her more then he already said. He had already put what she needed to do into words as best he could so he didn't have anything much more to add beside to fight more, spar more. He often joked that his mother 'beat' Echani Martial arts into him. In reality she almost never touched him, she just never stopped. A spar would just keep on going for what felt like ages. Keeping up such a form of combat even in a training environment for such long periods every day was just as exhausting in its own way as having reflexes beaten into you.

Which is why on the contrary, Dusaro was giving Sky plenty of time. Because it took time, like learning to walk or talk as a child. But, Sky had certain advantages Dusaro did not have when he was first learning. She already knew martial arts and could use the force. The force would go a long way to pulling her mind to his movements, to helping garner meaning. It was like a current, just beyond perception, a current that flowed through from each move he made, connecting it all together as a greater whole. In so many words, that current was 'ego', or a way of expressing it. Thinking about it would not help, does one need to think to know ones self, or does one simply express it in how they act? Thought would only get in the way and confuse the issue and this was the same. Though if that was something Sky would get was yet to be seen as the spar continued on.

She returned to a semi relaxed guard pose as she looked to Dus, one could tell the man though being fully into the whole spar was going easy on her to some extent. If she was to describe it in the way Ehcani saw combat it was like going to a lecture with the teacher stopping every few seconds to make sure you understood the work being said. In a way she could understand why their people used this as a form of communications, one someone knew how to fight and what it involved seeing the individual type of combat a person used was a far more intricate way of learning about them.

When talking people could lie and even with the force a person could hid their emotions behind good mental barriers, but with sparing, that was not something you could lie about. One could only fight with the skills they had, they couldn't make up something like say they are a Jedi but not know how a Jedi fight, that, in a sense was her understanding of it, but did it only related to one on one spars? Could such be related to just general actions? how one ate, slept walked? how they commanded others or were commanded? It made her query the old say 'actions speak louder then words' perhaps it that was meant in quite a literal sense instead of what most people though.

"This has probably got to be one of the most educational sparing matches I have ever been in".

Dus could 'tell' by how Sky was acting that she was starting to pick it up. If it was skill, luck, the force, or just how her mind worked he didn't know but he was glad to see she was picking up on it quickly. It was a rewarding kind of feeling, but when it came to feelings he felt a strange kind of pull. It was not a major thing but it got some ears further in the back of his head turning, though it wasn't anything he overtly 'noticed' in the moment as they sparred.

As they continued he could tell when the concepts had fully 'clicked'. Body language, movements and a few other factors showed the fact that things were clicking together, as it were. He made an amused smile at her remark, Dusaro nodding a tad in agreement. The Echani mindset of 'actions speaking louder than words' was something they took quite literally, to the point where some considered it an extreme and over analysis. Yet in spite of that, it has remained as one of the most effective martial arts and practices in the galaxy. That did not make it superior, or make them greater than any other such skill. But it was proof of its effectiveness. After a while of sparring, Dusaro would stop and relax his posture signalling the halt of the spar, Dus doing a traditional bow, an Echani salute of 'well done'.

"You grasped the concept well and quickly, that is good." Dusaro said with a nod and a grin, stretching a bit and heading over to a cooler, tossing her a bottle of water. Martial combat, even when being held back in such a manner, was tiring and hard work. "What did you think of it? Seemed to be enjoying yourself."

As the spar went on the whole notion of the Ehcnai fighting style became more apparent, she found herself looking at Dusaro's moves as if they were words and responding with her own counter. It was honestly starting to be more like a conversation with each participant saying one thing and then letting the other speak, it was, kind of strange but interesting, was this something all Ehcnai did? It was probably normal to them, for all she knew it would probably become normal to her as well the more she did it, maybe even when sparing with others too.

Finally the spar came to a halt as the other Jedi's hand movements, Sukai standing back, putting her arms straight beside her body, giving a deep Atrisian bow, not really understanding the meaning to Dus own salute but assumed it was a 'thank you for sparing' sort of mentality. "Well thanks, I kind of just went of what my own people do sometimes, although it is a still different to your Echani ways, even so I got the understanding of it relatively quickly, I must say it is a new way to 'speak with someone, certainly cannot lie with a spar not matter how good you are". That was the best way to describe it, still there was always room for improvement, she didn't think one little spar would be enough to get a grasp of the skill, more so since Dus was going easy.

A parallel would be someone speaking slowly to you when trying to learn a new language, over time she was certain the man would pick up the pace during duels.

Dusaro grinned, though the open expression of enjoyment had more then a few layers. On one hand, he was thrilled to, even in a fairly limited manner, spar with another on such a level once again. It was no exaggeration to say, it had been years. On another level, he felt a bit of pride that Sky had caught on so aptly and quickly, as well as her attempts to be more expressive and responsive in their fight. The other reason was because, he simply enjoyed fighting. Less the brutality and realities of it, but the competitive nature of it, even if a traditional Echani spar was not exactly about who was the 'winner'.

"Mhmm, there is no lying in fighting and actions. Or, there is, but it merely leads to a different truth." Dusaro said, realizing in retrospect that the phrasing probably didn't make sense, he stopped to explain. "Er, what i mean is that, hmm... Lets say i fought you and concealed my skill. Matched your abilities and purposefully and carefully used weaker tactics than i am capable of, only to reveal what i can do later to gain the upper hand. That would just be a form of deception, but the reverse is also possible. Someone with weaker skills, but a strong enough spirit and will, can make you think they are stronger than what they are and if they play their cards right, they will even feel like they are that strong. So, in the end, if someone uses such deception skillfully, is the deception truly a lie? If you are fooled by it, it becomes the truth. Only if you see through it, it is a lie." What Dusaro was trying to get across, in his usual, obtuse way, is that the truth is always in what we perceive. With that said, someone good at manipulating what people perceive can make anything seem 'true'. "Being able to see through such lies and to the heart of actions, that is the Echani 'way', as my mother put it." Dusaro said in conclusion. "Course... I say that, and it makes it sound easy. It isn't though."

Sukai continued to nod as Dus explained the different way a person could 'lie' in fighting, needless to say these analogies were certainly interesting. Believe it or not but the Hybrid was certainly a good teacher, she wondered how long it would take for him to reach master, her certainly had a way with words and his fists. "So your first illustration would kind of be like a smart guy pretending to be dumb during a conversation and genuinely fake ignorance over a certain subject to get a person to lower their guard around them before striking, that I can see". "As for the other one, I guess it could be a really charismatic person who can use their words to win an argument or get his way with the person whom they are talking with". It was kind of fun to put these into speaking term, also made her understand the concept more.

If she had to think of a real life example it would be her grandmother, from what she knew, despite being a master duelist and powerful Sith lord the women often put on a 'helpless civilian' act when in trouble. Not only did she manage to pull of the ability to look inept at CQC but the way she was able to express fear of an ill seasoned fighter served to make things all the more realistic, it was kind of frightening to see such deception from another family member. She turned her head back to the current master of the lesson, giving a small chuckle to the words his mother spoke, "everything is easier said then done, but we both have a few hundred years to get it down pat".

Dusaro had never taught in any major way, this was actually his first time 'sitting down' and trying to teach someone like this. It helped that it was something he had been raised doing and that Sky was a receptive student, that was what Duasro thought at least. "Mhmm, something like that. When someone is truly a master of something, you probably wont notice the wool over your eyes before it is to late. People like that are few and far between though. The charismatic and smart guy are more than likely, the same person in this example. Someone who has a wealth of knowledge and knows how to use it and the confidence, will be able to capture people with ease. Same idea here, someone with that level of skill and experience in combat will inevitably play their opponent like a fiddle. I aspire to reach that level one day." Though, it was a long way off, the top of that mountain.

He chuckled a bit, Dus nodding in agreement with her. "Yeah, sounds about right. Well, you do for sure. I was told the estimated lifespan of my species is roughly two hundred fifty, maybe three hundred years." It was something Dusaro didn't really know at all about, the specifics of his species and he would be lying if Dus said it didn't bother him. After a moment his mind clicked with something Sky had just said, a little mischievous grin spreading across his golden face. "We have a few hundred years though, eh? Thinking something up there behind those eyes? Planning my future or something?" Dusaro said it in jest, but in truth she was one of the few people he had shared most all the details of his life with and he had gotten closer to her than he had expected, given the short time they had known each other. The fact that he was teaching her like this was an extension of that trust.

"Soo, you want to play people like a fiddle in combat, well that is certainly an interesting way to fight, may not be a good idea to try that on a Sith, will probably make them really mad". Everyone knew mad Sith were quite the problem, in her mind it was not the best idea to toy with them for too long least they get all 'anger powered', if mother could use it to her advantage then so could other dark side users. "Still it would be a fight worth watching, like one of those holo drama's were the master just plays around with a huge group of assassins trying to kill him". There were hundreds of those types of movies circulating around Atrisia.

She cocked her head to the side pondering the new infromation "Really not even a thousands years? well my species can at least go to 5000 and since great great grandmother doesn't look a day over 30 I think we can live much longer, but still a few hundred years is still good". She would half to ask mother about specifics, she didn't exactly get to see her older family members that often, surprisingly Sith Lords were not allowed in Jedi space, nor did she think Sawa wanted to some to the Woookie home world anytime soon. She was brought from the though by Dus's next common on 'future' her pale face going a little red from the words, "ah I-I mean, no that is... oh for force sake I walked into that one didn't I".

Though if she was to be honest if anyone as was relationship material in personality and life span the Echani hybrid was probably the best option she had. That and he was one of the few people that knew about her vampire heritage and possible relations inside the Order.

"With Sith? No, if i was fighting a sith it wouldn't be anything like that. When i fight sith it is more like working out the most efficient, quickest way to come out on top and destroy the opposition. Which, might one day involve playing them like a fiddle, but i doubt it. The longer you fight a forcer of any kind with plans like that, the more likely they are to catch on. Spontaneous, sudden acts filled with emotion work best. Acts like kind of a screen, intense emotions that is. Makes it hard for them to feel what you are doing." Dusaro paused after a moment, knowing that such thinking and tactics were not what most would consider 'proper', for a Jedi. "That is the kind of stuff i learned when i was still a Merc and was fighting Sith. That kind of thing works on them just as well as Jedi." He said as way of explanation with a light shrug.

He let out a little nod and light sigh. "Aye, though, that is just a rough estimate from a few cell sample tests. The doctor admitted that, they didn't honestly know for sure. That and, from what some people have told me at least, the light side of the force seems to have positive effects on such things. I am not too worried about it though, after you survive a mortar barrage or two you live every day like the last one." Honestly, Dus was a bit curious about how long he would end up kicking around in the galaxy, given all the unknowns about his own species. Dusaro noticed her face go a bit red, as well as her verbally surprised reaction, Dusaro grinning quite broadly at that, not having expected quite that strong of a reaction. "My my, the lady shows a blush for the first time since i have known her and over such a thing, what is a man to think? Though, i don't think an expression like that is bad either." Dusaro said as he bravely 'poked the bear just a bit more, perhaps a bit to much though he meant what he said.

Though, in all honesty, Dusaro was not one who had ever really gotten into a seriously dedicated relationship before, not like that at least. It was, something of a regret in a way that he hadn't. He had been close to it, once.

Sh was not sure why Dus continued to use the talking metaphor but understood the meaning behind it. "So in short since most Sith are power over skill and refined sword play it's best to use quick and unpredictable movements to try and get them beat as fast as possible". "Quick and clean, straight to the point, that is something I can get behind quite well". One things that was often a specialty of Samuri was the fighting for of itjutsu, or often referred to as the sword drawing style. Drawing a sword from the sheath with quick succession and power, having the ability to cleanly cut through a person in a fell swoop, somethings easily passing my armor if the blade was good quality. It made for a very sneaky form of fighting that left an opponent unable to predict movements since any attack always started out the same.

She cocked her head to the side a little as more was spoken about his age, "sooo I'm a guessing a hybrid like yourself is like a one in a few billion, from the way you speak it makes it seem like no one has ever really bothered or seen someone like yourself". "Though with how long I live it simply a task of waiting and seeing when you die of old age". Her comment to a few seconds to register to herself once again, making the same mistake of suggesting that the two would be together for quite a while, that combined with his next comment just made her usual pale face bright red. It was an unfortunate aspect she had gotten from her mother, any talk of relationships and possible romance just seemed to make her fluster more then a shy girl walking into a locker room of men.

"S-shut up, idiot", she tried to yell, but only coming off as a wining and lack luster complaint, Sukai proceeding to bury her head into her face out of shame.
