She repeated the words as instructed, carefully, to honour the tradition she was being brought into. In the glow of the Nebula and the flickering light of the brazier her breath caught slightly with emotion before she began.
"As I bleed, so shall my Family bleed with me. As I suffer, so shall my Family offer comfort. I bind myself to the will of The Family, that my sacrifice may nourish the roots of the Black Oak; and should I die in service, may I be buried beneath it, so that my body is consumed and it's each branch nourished." Mairéad had never heard these words before today but they spilled off her tongue as easily as if she had said them a thousand times.
Mairéad fought a wince by biting her lip as Marcella reached and drew her blood in turn. She began to bleed into the brazier having to forcefully control her instinct to freeze her injury and stop the bleeding.
"I swear, under pain of death, that I shall not betray my Family - that I shall not offer secrets to any living being beyond our reach, and that I shall not allow any being, alive or dead, to come between my Family and I."
The two joined hands and smoke from their mingling blood gently rose. Mairéad exchanged an understanding glance with Marcella when she saw that she wasn't the only one fighting the pain right now. It was likely her mind and the pain in her hand playing tricks but she could swear she felt their heart beats combining in the hand shake.
She reached with her spare hand and placed it gently on the upper hip of her friend, it was an unconscious gesture of how close she felt to the woman. Other thoughts crossed her mind too, but she wouldn't risk a moment that was already so special.
"This is probably getting a bit old now, but thank you again, for everything Marcella, I swear I will never ever let you down." Mairéad said with genuine gratitude as they finally let go and she looked at her injured hand. "You've all done that then?" She wondered what polite response would be to run off and treat a wound done with such reverence.
This was her life now, she had heard the term, "only one way out" banded about, but now she understood more clearly how significant this was. She had been ready to take the oath for a while and pride swelled in her that she had been honored in such a way.
