Nowhere to Run
For a second moment, Daiya lingered on the edge of her friend's lips. She couldn't tell if anything had changed when they parted, only that she felt as warm and alive as she had the first time. The mirth bubbled up in her throat, giggling out with the teen's giddy thoughts. Her hand laid flat on Hex's collarbone, feeling the pulse of her friend's body beneath it. If there was anything that Daiya wanted more in this moment, it was to continue basking in the glow of their embrace for another minute and another hour.
"What?!" Her voice lowered to a hiss, alarmed by the wide eyes in the face in her view. Water rushed between them when Hex stepped back, and Daiya's foot moved forward to follow. Nothing made sense in her mind beyond stopping their fleeting, vulnerable moment from ending too soon. To go back to before, to whatever reality existed outside the pool, seemed cruel now. It haunted her like a specter until that reality dawned on the teen standing in the middle of the pool.
Caught!
The young shadowrunner's mind scrambled in a flurry of thoughts, whirling in the water back toward their clothes and equipment. Her shirt and pants stuck to wet skin as she yanked and tugged them on quickly, the fabric demanding a moment for her to dry off first. It was something she couldn't give, or listen to, pushing against straining fabric to find the blaster wedged deep in her jacket pocket. She had it out by the time Hex was asking for an opinion.
"How 'bout what? Run?" Daiya's reply came quickly, though she stood with her blaster at the ready. If a Corpo burst through the door, or any Seccers were there to arrest them, she was going to make it hurt. "Feth it, I knew that alarm system was too easy to kill."
Hex laughed then, and Daiya felt herself relax. She was surprised at how easy it was, not wanting to question that any further. If she did, the teen might ignore the danger awaiting them completely. She could feel a desire lurking at the edges of her consciousness, ready to dive heedlessly back into the pool and back into the arms of a warm, comfortable blue girl again.
It took everything Daiya had to kill that desire, as completely as the moment had ended.
Daiya stepped on bare feet, her unshorn boots coupled under one arm, leading with her other toward the door. She motioned to Hex with her blaster, peering out into the room beyond. It was dark now, reversed from when they came in, and it added a dose of caution into her words. "When I open the door, get to your hoverboard and be ready for me."
Raising her eyebrows in an unspoken question, the young shadowrunner waited until the blue girl was ready. Then, sensing her moment, she pulled open the door and let Hex rush through first.
Whatever was out there, she was sure they could beat the odds.
