.: PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS
[ + ] Utility Party Member (The Mechanic). Though programmed with a protocol chip for social interaction with humanoids, BB functions as a maintenance droid.
[ + ] Spare Parts. BB operates with a redundant droid brain, a primary brain for social interaction and an independent, second-degree droid brain that provides his logic reasoning for mechanical tasks. If one of his droid brains becomes damaged or destroyed, the other is still capable of operating (albeit at diminished capacity accordingly).
[+/-] Robot Kid. Constructed of aerospace grade carbo-plas and servo actuators in place of bone or muscle, BB is a Super Strong Child when compared to a baseline humanoid. This also enables BB to be fluent in more than six million forms of communication, including Droidspeak. BB's ocular lenses and auditory sensors also allow him to see and hear beyond the range of human perception (multi-spectral image resolution, multi-frequency scanning). The downside is that, as his senses are governed by mechanical sensors, BB has no olfactory sensory perception (smells/odors), but may be visually cognizant of particulate matter in the air. Nor does he possess a sense of 'taste.' His sense of touch is also different from the tactical awareness of an actual human being, as he is capable of discerning temperate and texture, but not the same 'hot' or 'cold' (or pain) of a humanoid.
[+/-] Ridiculously Human Robot.
[ - ] Batteries Not Included. Whilst not requiring food or water, BB does require periodic recharging. His diatium power cells are long-lasting, but finite. This means he needs regular access to a power source to maintain functionality. He is also vulnerable to ion-based energy, such as ion blasters or restraining bolts.
[ - ] Sleeper Agent. Programmed subroutines operating within the redundant droid brain can execute independent of his primary droid brain. This allows him to to conduct industrial espionage and steal engineering data and trade secrets for Archangel Research, with no conscious recollection of such retained in his active memory.
At just over 1 meter in height, the BB-4001A is a diminutive human replica droid intended to approximate the size and likeness of a humanoid child. With that in mind, carbo-plas was used for the frame to save on weight, as a result of which the BB-4001A model is only marginally heavier than a child of similar stature. To produce the Cathar likeness, a synth-skin and faux fur covering overlays the droid body, imitating the lines and pattern of black, orange, cream, and white that is often referred to as 'tabby' coloration.

.: HISTORICAL RECORD
The BB-4001A was a custom order commissioned by Dr. Calvin Hobbes, a psychiatrist engaged in droid anthropomorphic research and design for Cybot Galactica. A single, never married industrial psychiatrist respected for work in human-cyborg relations, the BB-4001A was a utilitarian, functional request on a number of levels.
To start with, the BB-4001A would be a personal droid and companion for the aging Hobbes, now in her sixties and discovering she was succumbing to loneliness as her work moved her out to the droid foundries of Mechis III, with its sparse human population and isolation in the galaxy. But, the real reason for BB's existence was to serve as a test bed for a new prototype of protocol chip, one that Dr. Hobbes hoped would make droids seem more 'human' in their social interaction with humanoids. It was Dr. Hobbes' hope that such a droid would be able to achieve new levels of social recognition and inter-operability within human groups.
The protocol chip that she developed is what gives BB-4001A his personality, synchronizing and alternating logic circuits across prioritized demand signals based the calculated categorization of any given task as requiring either 'social' or 'mechanical' aptitude. Through several years work on the project, the protocol chip was further refined to be able to divide a task into multiple smaller tasks, assigned to the social or mechanical logic circuits and then compiled into a more synthesized response. With ten years of documented study, Dr. Calvin - now in her 70's - was finalizing plans that would put the protocol chip into production when dissident droids seized control of the droid foundries of Mechis III as part of a new Clockwork Rebellion.
Dr. Hobbes was killed in the uprising, and the BB-4001A fell into the possession of the droid dissidents. However, her research was already in the hands of Archangel Research, and had already been put to use in improving the human-like qualities of their Human Replica Droids... all without her knowledge.
Archangel products are never quite what they seem, after all.
