Between A Rock And A Hard Place (Cora)

@[member="Cora Passek"]

"I have experience with dungeons. Not pleasant. Interesting learning experience though," Moira said conversationally, or at least as close as someone who tended to speak in a dull monotone could. Perhaps she was trying to lighten the mood a bit. She acknowledged Cora's comment about having installed secret compartments to hide. Good. But then Moira would not have expected anything else. Cora was a professional after all...otherwise Moira would not be here. Otherwise she would not be going to the lengths she did to keep her alive. Of course Moira would not approve of Cora helping the helpless and playing Good Samaritan. There were too many risks involved...everyone betrayed you in the end. You had to be prepared to sacrifice your pieces on the great board and not feel any remorse about it, for if they were smart they would do so as well if given the chance.

That was the rational reason. The other was that Moira did not share.

Perfectly still and calm Moira wildly steered the ship as behind them pure chaos broke loose. It was not a supernova, but the explosion as asteroids were torn apart was devastating enough. Moira pushed the engines for all they were worth, most of the energy normally devoted to shields or weapons systems was redirected to them. Behind them the fighters went up in brilliant explosions and, so the logic went, if the Nubian was caught in the chaos then its shields would not do much to keep it safe anyway given the sheer force. One asteroid blew up, then another, it seemed like a chain reaction and the ship shook and dodged seemingly wildly as debris came flying their way. Many times the ship shook and avoided several probably fatal near collisions, but she pulled it through. Behind them there was a beautiful flash of light as several asteroids exploded, presumably incinerating any fighter behind them. The ship shuddered as debris struck it, an annoying beeping sound informed them about structural damage sustained and the shockwave threatened to grab them, but nonetheless the Nubian pulled through.

Long pianist fingers, so deceptively soft and perfect, swept over the computerised interface. Moira was using a code to intercept messages from the ODF base. "There will be an investigation into the blast, but Vandelhelm is a low priority zone, the Vandelhelm Cloud is accident prone. We have a window of opportunity," she said softly as she steered the ship towards the uninviting looking planet, clearly heading for the fringers of it, towards the mountains and caverns. Incidentally her steering as she penetrated the atmosphere was taking them quite close to the location of where once Kerrigan, Tegaea and Cira had fought a thresher maw so long ago.
